Book Salinity and Drought Tolerance in Plants

Download or read book Salinity and Drought Tolerance in Plants written by Ashwani Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book is a comprehensive collection of scientific research on different plants under drought and salt stress conditions. The main focus of this book is to elaborate on the mechanisms being operative in plants under stress and how various biological factors mitigate the adverse effects for better plant productivity. This book covers all physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms operating under drought and saline stresses. The current status and impact of drought and salinity on various crop plants have been elaborated on in different chapters. Agricultural lands are either turning barren or becoming more saline and drought-prone with increasing temperatures, decreasing water tables, untimely rainfall, and other environmental factors. In India, salt-affected soils occupy an area of about 6.73 million ha of which saline and sodic soils constitute roughly 40 and 60%, respectively. All these factors individually or cumulatively, affect the plant growth and development and hence, the crop productivity with the monetary loss. The inbuilt plant's ability with modified/acclimatized mechanisms has been described in various chapters with step-wise descriptions. The role of various plant growth-promoting agents including nano-particles, micro-organisms, metabolites or phytohormones, etc in mitigating adverse effects of drought and salinity has been explained precisely. Updated information on the use of speed breeding, proteomics, epigenetics, and transcriptomics in different crops along with high throughput technologies is included for the cross-talk of various network mechanisms. This book is helpful for the readers in knowing salinity and drought through the physiological, biochemical and genetic, and molecular levels to understand plant behaviour under stress conditions. Also, the book serves as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture, plant physiology, biochemistry, forestry, and environmental sciences. National and international agricultural scientists and policymakers will also find this to be a useful read.

Book Crop Production Technologies

Download or read book Crop Production Technologies written by Peeyush Sharma and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop production depends on the successful implementation of the soil, water, and nutrient management technologies. Food production by the year 2020 needs to be increased by 50 percent more than the present levels to satisfy the needs of around 8 billion people. Much of the increase would have to come from intensification of agricultural production. Importance of wise usage of water, nutrient management, and tillage in the agricultural sector for sustaining agricultural growth and slowing down environmental degradation calls for urgent attention of researchers, planners, and policy makers. Crop models enable researchers to promptly speculate on the long-term consequences of changes in agricultural practices. In addition, cropping systems, under different conditions, are making it possible to identify the adaptations required to respond to changes. This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach and contributes to this new vision. Leading authors analyze topics related to crop production technologies. The efforts have been made to keep the language as simple as possible, keeping in mind the readers of different language origins. The emphasis has been on general descriptions and principles of each topic, technical details, original research work, and modeling aspects. However, the comprehensive journal references in each area should enable the reader to pursue further studies of special interest. The subject has been presented through fifteen chapters to clearly specify different topics for convenience of the readers.

Book Growth and Nutrient Uptake of Young Date Palms in Response to Deficit Irrigation and Partial Rootzone Drying

Download or read book Growth and Nutrient Uptake of Young Date Palms in Response to Deficit Irrigation and Partial Rootzone Drying written by Noura Mubarak Ameri and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study young clonal date palm plants were transferred into horizontal split-root pots filled with compost-amended soil of the UAE. The pots were constructed from two adjacent plastic containers, fastened together by adhesive tape. Once the plants had established new roots in the containers, the soil moisture level was measured every two to four days in all soil compartments. In the control treatment, the soil moisture level was brought to 30% w/w after soil moisture recording. Deficit irrigation treatments received exactly 60% of the average amount of water supplied to the pots of the control treatment. In the homogeneous deficit irrigation treatment, irrigation water was distributed over the two adjacent root compartments of each pot in a way that the soil moisture level was kept the same between the two parts of the plant root system. In partial root zone drying (PRD) treatments, irrigation water was supplied only to one of the two adjacent pots. The PRD treatments were shifted every 2, 4 or 6 weeks, in a way that the formerly dry soil part of each split root pot was irrigated, and the moist part fell dry. In the 'permanent PRD' treatment, water supply was not shifted, and only one compartment was irrigated throughout the experiment. The irrigation treatments were maintained for 240 days. By the end of this period, no visual differences could be detected between palms of the different irrigation treatments. Leaf elongation measurements did not reveal an effect of deficit irrigation on leaf growth. Though leaves of the control treatment grew faster during the first phase of development, they grew slower compared with the other treatments during later stages, so that in the end no significant differences in leaf length were detected. There were no differences in the nutritional status between plants of the different irrigation treatments, suggesting that date palms are very well able to take up nutritional elements from dry soil. The result of this study indicate that date palms respond to high amounts of irrigation water supply with a severe reduction in water use efficiency. Since PRD and homogeneous deficit irrigation yielded the same results in term of plant growth and nutrient uptake, homogeneous deficit irrigation is recommended for date palm production, as it does not require the expansion of the existing irrigation system.

Book Salt Tolerance and Current Status of the Date Palms in the United Arab Emirates

Download or read book Salt Tolerance and Current Status of the Date Palms in the United Arab Emirates written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aimed to address the current status of the United Arab Emirates date palms. The first chapter focused on the development of the date palm sector in the UAE. A huge increase in the date palm number was achieved in the past few decades. In the same time, there are critical issues facing this development, such as water demand, salinity, and Red Palm Weevil. The second chapter is a greenhouse experiment to test the growth of twelve date palm seeds at four NaCl levels, control, 3000, 6000, and 12000 ppm. Optimal growth found at control and 3000 ppm of NaCl. Relative growth rate (RGR), biomass, and NL decreased significantly by increasing salinity; however, no significant differences were observed in the average SGR for any cultivars. Increased NaCl leads to significant decreases in K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ contents of plants. Na:K ratios were lower in shoots than in roots. Lulu, Fard, Khnaizi, Nabtat Safi, and Razez cultivars showed higher RGR and biomasses whereas Khnaizi, Mesally, and Safri had higher Na:K ratios than other cultivars in the control indicating higher Na+ discriminations from plant parts. The third chapter studied the vegetation change in the eastern region of the UAE. Due to shortage of fresh water resources, the vegetation of the eastern region of the UAE has experienced a series of declines resulting from salinization of groundwater. To assess these changes, field measurements combined with Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) based Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) were analyzed. Images from two dates, 1987 and 2000 were acquired to enable the computation of the greenness anomalies for three sites in the eastern region, Fujairah, Kalba, and Hatta. The results show an overall increase in the agricultural area, associated with a severe decrease in vegetation greenness and health conditions, particularly in the Kalba study area. The SAVIvalues decreased with increased soil salinity, permitting the identification of salt-affected areas. Potential areas of further research range from studying the effects of tree spacing and understory crops as immediate and potential solutions to maintain productivity and mitigate the salinity problem.
