Book excerpt: This report describes a part of a larger program funded jointly by the US Federal Aviation Administration and the National Aeronautical Establishment to provide background information on instrument flight handling qualities of helicopter. This latest series of tests was aimed at addressing the acceptability of pitch and roll aperiodic characteristics when performing general handling and mission-oriented tasks in the NAE Airborne Simulator. In general, the results of these tests are consistent with proposed requirements for helicopter IFR handling qualities. Two significant factors were highlighted in these tests: aircraft characteristics which were not specifically under study may have affected pilot opinions; and changes in pilot opinion occurred depending on whether the task was one of general handling or was specifically mission-oriented. This investigation was in support of a regulatory review indertaken by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration as part of an overall assessment of the helicopter certification process. The results illustrate the inter-dependence of the various stability and control characteristics which contribute to sate instrument flight handling qualities, and underline the importance of good mission simulation in conducting certification-related experiments. Book excerpt: This investigation was carried out to highlight deficiencies of helicopters handling qualities when performing low speed instrument approaches. Steep decelerating MLS (Microwave Landing System) approaches to a decision height of 50 feet, simultaneously decelerating to 20 knots, were perfromed in an airborne simulator--a variable-stability Bell 205A helicopter. Tracking performance, interms of height, azimuth and speed errors was of an acceptable standard, but pilot workload was extremely high, especially during the overshoot phase. Benefits of different levels of control system augmentation were not readily apparent in this high workload environment. In view of the results of this investigation, a follow-on program is proposed where further attempts will be made to determine the effects of display and control sophistication on pilot workload during slow-speed helicopter instrument procedures. Book excerpt: The opto-kinetic cervico reflex (OKCR) is a recently hypothesized visually driven reflex that serves to stabilize the image of the external horizon on the retina during high performance aircraft roll maneuvers. Although anecdotally reported as occurring, head tilt during helicopter flight has not been formally studied. Such research is required to determine the full impact and significance it may have on a rotary wing aviator's flying performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between horizon position and perception of orientation, and thus generate vital information to assess whether this reflex plays an important role in spatial disorientation. Twenty volunteer pilots participated in a UH-60 flight simulator study to examine the effects of this reflex. The results confirm that the OKCR occurs during simulated helicopter flight, both with and without night vision goggles. As with previous studies, head roll increased during flight under visual meteorological conditions in relation to increasing aircraft roll angle up to a maximum sustainable level and then remained constant. Head roll did not occur during flight under instrument meteorological conditions. Various aspects that impact rotary-wing operations are discussed, and recommendations made for future research.
