Book Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Clear Water Repellent Coatings on Partially Grouted Single Wythe Concrete Masonry Walls

Download or read book Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Clear Water Repellent Coatings on Partially Grouted Single Wythe Concrete Masonry Walls written by Jeffrey H. Greenwald and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of architectural concrete masonry to construct commercial and institutional buildings is common in the northwestern United States. By combining different block sizes, shapes, colors, and surface treatments, architects have designed many striking structures. This test program focused on the evaluation of clear water repellent coatings because they are an important component of a water resistant wall system. The number of repellents produced has grown and their chemical composition has changed during recent years. The test results will provide guidance in updating the industry recommendation used by design professionals and building owners. A total of 14 walls were constructed and tested in accordance with ASTM E 514, "Standard Test Method for Water Penetration and Leakage Through Masonry." The walls were all constructed with materials shipped from northwest block producers and represent construction techniques used in the Pacific Northwest. Each wall was initially tested uncoated to establish a baseline performance. Afterwards, a clear water repellent was applied and each wall was retested. The walls were then tested a third time after aging outside for approximately one year. The test results will establish comparative behavior between wall assemblies.

Book A New Concept in Preventing Water Leakage Through Single Wythe Concrete Masonry Walls

Download or read book A New Concept in Preventing Water Leakage Through Single Wythe Concrete Masonry Walls written by C. Nmai and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the details of a unique patented, water-repellent concrete block design that prevents moisture that enters the core area from reaching interior surfaces are presented. The subject water leakage-controlling concrete masonry unit (WLC CMU) employs a three stage water leakage prevention process, as follows: 1) the use of water- repellent admixtures and performance-optimized mix designs to resist the passage of wind- driven rain through the block and mortar itself; 2) a horizontal beveled edge, and chamfered vertical sides of the block's face shell that provide improved access for proper joint tooling and facilitates water drainage away from bed joint areas; and, 3) a series of grooves and channels that prevent moisture migration across the block web surfaces, and directs it to the flashed courses where it can be effectively drained from the building envelope. Wind- driven rain tests performed by the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) clearly showed the benefits of WLC CMU technology. Using identical materials, mix design, and block manufacturing equipment, a 99% reduction of moisture penetration to the core area was witnessed twice after 72 hours of ASTM E 514 testing.

Book Initial Effects of Clear Coatings on Water Permeance of Masonry

Download or read book Initial Effects of Clear Coatings on Water Permeance of Masonry written by RH. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of water permeance tests on twelve walls before and after coating with a proprietary clear water repellant are reported. Half of the single-wythe walls were brick; and other half, normal-weight concrete masonry units. Half of the walls used masonry cement mortar; the other half, portland cement-lime mortar. Comparison of results revealed a significant reduction in the amount of leakage, an increase in the amount of time required to achieve maximum rate of leakage, and a decrease in the percentage of damp area as a result of the application of the coating. The walls will be retested after six months of outdoor exposure.

Book Twentieth Century Building Materials

Download or read book Twentieth Century Building Materials written by Thomas C. Jester and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the concluding decades of the twentieth century, the historic preservation community increasingly turned its attention to modern buildings, including bungalows from the 1930s, gas stations and diners from the 1940s, and office buildings and architectural homes from the 1950s. Conservation efforts, however, were often hampered by a lack of technical information about the products used in these structures, and to fill this gap Twentieth-Century Building Materials was developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service and first published in 1995. Now, this invaluable guide is being reissued—with a new preface by the book’s original editor. With more than 250 illustrations, including a full-color photographic essay, the volume remains an indispensable reference on the history and conservation of modern building materials. Thirty-seven essays written by leading experts offer insights into the history, manufacturing processes, and uses of a wide range of materials, including glass block, aluminum, plywood, linoleum, and gypsum board. Readers will also learn about how these materials perform over time and discover valuable conservation and repair techniques. Bibliographies and sources for further research complete the volume. The book is intended for a wide range of conservation professionals including architects, engineers, conservators, and material scientists engaged in the conservation of modern buildings, as well as scholars in related disciplines.

Book Concrete at High Temperatures

Download or read book Concrete at High Temperatures written by Zdeněk P. Bažant and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1996 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increased use of concrete in high temperature environments, it is essential for engineers to have a knowledge of the properties and mathematical modelling of concrete in such extreme conditions. Bringing together, for the first time, vast amounts of data previously scattered throughout numerous papers and periodicals, this book provides, in two parts, a comprehensive and systematic review of both the properties and the mathematical modelling of concrete at high temperatures. Part I provides a comprehensive description of the material properties of concrete at high temperatures. Assuming only a basic knowledge of mathematics, the information is presented at an elementary level suitable for graduates of civil engineering or materials science. Part II describes the response of concrete to high temperatures in precise terms based on mathematical modelling of physical processes. Suitable for advanced graduate students, researchers and specialists, it presents detailed mathematical models of phenomena such as heat transfer, moisture diffusion, creep, volume changes, cracking and fracture. Concrete at High Temperatures will prove a valuable reference source to university researchers and graduate students in civil engineering and materials science, engineers in research laboratories, and practising engineers concerned with fire resistance, concrete structures for nuclear reactors and chemical technology vessels.
