Book The Assessment and Modeling of Regeneration Dynamics for Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L

Download or read book The Assessment and Modeling of Regeneration Dynamics for Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L written by Jerome Allan Krueger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents an analysis of regeneration processes for eastern white pine (Pinus strohus L.). The objective is to develop an integrated approach to evaluate the influence of factors that, alone and in combination, determine regeneration outcomes. This study is composed of three sections. The first chapter is a literature review of white pine regeneration dynamics. The purpose is to present a process for understanding the regeneration process of a single species and present a conceptual approach to integrated evaluation of influential variables. Six interrelated ecological factors (seed tree density, competition, disturbance, seedbed conditions, soils, and damage agents) were identified and their impact on the regeneration process is evaluated. A conceptual model of the integration approach and two examples of how this approach can be utilized in assessing regeneration operations are presented.

Book Southern Forest Resource Assessment

Download or read book Southern Forest Resource Assessment written by David N. Wear and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The southern forest resource assessment provides a comprehensive analysis of the history, status, and likely future of forests in the Southern United States. Twenty-three chapters address questions regarding social/economic systems, terrestrial ecosystems, water and aquatic ecosystems, forest health, and timber management; 2 additional chapters provide a background on history and fire. Each chapter surveys pertinent literature and data, accesses conditions, identifies research needs, and examines the implications for southern forests and the benefits they provide.

Book excerpt: Many North American plants have characteristics that are especially promising as candidates for expanding our food supply and generating new economically competitive crops. This book is an informative analysis of the top 100 indigenous food plants of North America, focusing on those species that have achieved commercial success or have substantial market potential. The book's user-friendly format provides concise information on each plant. It examines the geography and ecology, history, economic and social importance, food and industrial uses, and the economic future of each crop.

Book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape

Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Book Simulation Modeling of Forest Landscape Disturbances

Download or read book Simulation Modeling of Forest Landscape Disturbances written by Ajith H. Perera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest landscape disturbances are a global phenomenon. Simulation models are an important tool in understanding these broad scale processes and exploring their effects on forest ecosystems. This book contains a collection of insights from a group of ecologists who address a variety of processes: physical disturbances such as drought, wind, and fire; biological disturbances such as defoliating insects and bark beetles; anthropogenic influences; interactions among disturbances; effects of climate change on disturbances; and the recovery of forest landscapes from disturbances—all from a simulation modeling perspective. These discussions and examples offer a broad synopsis of the state of this rapidly evolving subject.
