Book Stripping of Asphalt Concrete

Download or read book Stripping of Asphalt Concrete written by Frazier Parker and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The freeze thaw stress pedestal test, the boil test and the indirect tensile test were evaluated for assessing the stripping potential of typical Alabama asphalt concrete mixes and the effectiveness of antistripping additives. This was accomplished by testing surface and base/ binder mixes with five aggregate combinations, two sources of asphalt cement and three antistripping additives. Because of the test complexity and lack of a strong correlation with stripping performance, the freeze thaw stress pedestal test is not recommended. The boil and indirect tensile tests, in combination, offer a viable, although, imperfect, system for stripping evaluation. The lack of a strong correlation with reported field performance detracts from both tests. However, the imprecise and subjective nature of the reported performance and the correlations obtained by others are mitigating factors.

Book A Literature Review of Liquid Antistripping and Tests for Measuring Stripping

Download or read book A Literature Review of Liquid Antistripping and Tests for Measuring Stripping written by Christine W. Curtis and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this literature review is to search the literature in the area of chemical and mineral agents used to promote adhesion of asphalt-aggregate mixes. In addition, tests performed to measure the effectiveness of these agents were reviewed. The information gained through this literature search and review provides background information for the research being performed in the SHRP A-003B contract. This literature search was performed using on-line chemical abstracts for documents in the time period of 1967 to present.

Book Test Method to Determine the Degree of Asphalt Stripping from Aggregates

Download or read book Test Method to Determine the Degree of Asphalt Stripping from Aggregates written by Richard L. Boudreau and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moisture damage has long been recognized as one of the most critical factors influencing the performance of asphalt concrete (AC) pavements. This moistureinduced damage occurs from either the physical separation of the asphalt film from the aggregate or the softening of the asphalt binder within the AC mixture in the presence of water. This phenomenon is often termed stripping. Although many test procedures have been developed over the years to identify stripping potential of AC mixtures, none have received wide acceptance by the engineering profession. The purpose of this research was to develop a standard test procedure that will allow for a quantitative means of predicting moisture susceptibility of AC mixtures and provide for an assessment on the effectiveness of antistripping additives. The measure of response made in this study was the resilient modulus obtained from a pneumatic repeatedload test system. Dense graded, laboratorycompacted test specimens fabricated from two aggregate sources in the state of Oregon were evaluated in this research. The test procedure and specimen preparation developed was implemented with a saturation and freezethaw moisture condition cycling. Results indicate that the procedure can significantly differentiate between a proven stripping aggregate and a proven non stripping aggregate. The comparison can be made following full saturation plus one freezethaw cycle. Results also indicate that caution must be used when comparing mixes of different air void contents. The results of the procedure developed appear to over predict moisture susceptibility of low air void groups (6.5%) and under predict moisture susceptibilty of high air void groups (8.5%). The procedure also has a strong potential to assess the effectiveness of antistripping additives, although some of the additives evaluated in this study generally did not improve the mixtures sensitivity to moisture damage.

Book Moisture Damage in Asphalt Concrete

Download or read book Moisture Damage in Asphalt Concrete written by Russell G. Hicks and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1991 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, construction engineers, maintenance engineers, and others interested in avoiding or limiting moisture damage in asphalt concrete. Information is provided on physical and chemical explanations for moisture damage in asphalt concrete, along with a discussion of current practices and test methods for determining or reducing the susceptibility of various asphalt concrete components and mixtures to such damage. Moisture damage in asphalt concrete is a nationwide problem which often necessitates premature replacement of highway pavement surfaces. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the underlying physical and chemical phenomena responsible for such damage. Current test methods used to determine the susceptibility of asphalt concretes, or their constituents, to moisture damage are described and evaluated. Additionally, current practices for minimizing the potential for moisture damage are examined.

Download or read book A Field Study of the Stripping Potential of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures written by Frazier Parker and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An earlier laboratory study with representative Alabama materials illustrated the difficulties inherent in predicting field stripping performance with available laboratory testing procedures. A part of the problem appeared to be the inability to accurately model construction conditions in the laboratory. This study examined and modified laboratory conditions to better simulate construction conditions, particularly residual aggregate moisture. It was found that the wet-dry tensile test does a reasonably good job of designing and controlling mixes comprised primarily of siliceous sand-gravel. However, additional testing should be conducted to further develop procedures for including residual aggregate moisture during mix design.
