Book excerpt: The energy balance and radiation balance components were determined at six sites during the First International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project Field Experiment (FIFE) conducted south of Manhattan, Kansas during the summer of 1987. The objectives were: to determine the effect of slope and aspect, throughout a growing season, on the magnitude of the surface energy balance fluxes as determined by the Energy Balance Method (EBM); to investigate the calculation of the soil heat flux density at the surface as calculated from the heat capacity and the thermal conductivity equations; and to evaluate the performance of the Surface Energy and Radiation Balance System (SERBS). A total of 17 variables were monitored at each site. They included net, solar (up and down), total hemispherical (up and down), and diffuse radiation, soil temperature and heat flux density, air and wet bulb temperature gradients, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. A preliminary analysis of the data, for the season, indicate that variables including net radiation, air temperature, vapor pressure, and wind speed were quite similar at the sites even though the sites were as much as 16 km apart and represented four cardinal slopes and the top of a ridge. Book excerpt: Water is the most effective agent in the climate system to modulate energy transfer by radiative processes, through its exchanges of latent heat and within cascades of chemical processes. It is the source of all life on earth, and once convective clouds are formed, it enables large vertical transports of momentum, heat and various atmospheric constituents up to levels above the tropical tropopause. Water triggers very complex processes at the earth's continental surfaces and within the oceans. At last, water in its gaseous phase is the most important greenhouse-gas! Numerical modelling and measurements of the state of the present climate system needs a very thorough understanding of all these processes and their various interactions and forcings. This is a prerequisite for more substantial forecasts of future states in all scales of time, from days to centuries. Therefore, the management of the World Climate Research Programme established in 1988 the new programme GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment). GEWEX is specifically defined to determine the energy and water transports in the fast components of the climate system with the presently available modelling and measurement means and to provide new capabilities for the future. Research in GEWEX must further develop methods to determine the influence of climatic anomalies on available water resources.

Book excerpt: The surface energy budget at the earth surface describes the partitioning of energy into storage (S), sensible heat (H), and latent heat (LE). The measurement of the surface energy flux provides key insight into processes such as evapotranspiration (ET) and the water budget. However, attempts to measure energy fluxes into these variables often fail to account for all the available energy, referred to as energy balance closure error (EBCE). Available energy (net radiation - Rn) and energy fluxes into S, H, and LE were analyzed for a lodgepole pine forest in eastern Idaho, USA. The EBCE analysis indicated approximately 20% missing energy for the lodgepole pine forest. All flux pathways were evaluated to identify which were under-measured. Consistent with findings at other flux measurement sites, it is believed that H and LE were under-measured. A novel approach to adjust apparently under-measured H and LE from eddy covariance (EC) systems was developed using independently-measured H from a large aperture scintillometer (LAS) based on the hypothesis that LAS would not be subject to the same errors that affect EC measurements, namely unmeasured fluxes associated with the low frequency part of the turbulent spectra caused by landscape heterogeneity, advection, and non-steady state conditions. Adjusted data was then used to evaluate ET for the lodgepole pine forest and to develop a Kc curve for the forest based on reference ET (ETr) using meteorological data from a nearby weather station.
