Book Cost Effective Analysis of Recycled Products for Use in Highway Construction

Download or read book Cost Effective Analysis of Recycled Products for Use in Highway Construction written by Jiwan Das Gupta and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 4.5 billion tons of non-hazardous wastes are generated in the United States each year. Out of these wastes over 200 million tons of post consumer waste is generated. The disposal of post consumer waste is the responsibility of municipality and society. Four waste materials, glass, plastic, rubber tires and paper and paperboard, were selected for detailed study. A questionnaire survey was conducted for obtaining input from all state departments of transportation (DOTs) and recyclers and solid waste management facilities in the state of Ohio. Responses received from state DOTs stated that they use various recycled materials in highway construction but do not conduct cost-effectiveness analysis of recycled waste materials. The cost of disposal of post consumer waste is increasing, which requires an alternate use for these waste materials. One possible use of these post consumer waste materials is in highway construction. An economic analysis is needed for their cost-effectiveness determination before using these materials in highway construction. Though these recycled waste materials are expensive compared to virgin material, consideration of the savings in terms of societal cost makes these materials become cost-effective and attractive to use in highway construction. Concepts of marginal costs and marginal benefits are used in developing the cost-effective analysis of recycled materials. The recycled waste material will be competitive with the new material if costs such as disamenity costs of disposal and landfill costs are added to the material costs. Benefits from recycling are numerous, such as the revenue generated from recycling and sale of material, avoidance of disposal costs, and improvement in environmental quality. Revenue from sale of each material is treated as a reduction in costs. Combining all costs together provides a platform to develop a marginal benefit function for recycling. A computer program was developed using Microsoft Access (trademark) to provide a tool in making an economic decision.

Book Recycled Materials and by Products in Highway Applications

Download or read book Recycled Materials and by Products in Highway Applications written by Mary Stroup-Gardiner and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recycled materials and industrial byproducts are being used in transportation applications with increasing frequency. There is a growing body of experience showing that these materials work well in highway applications. This study gathers the experiences of transportation agencies in determining the relevant properties of recycled materials and industrial byproducts and the beneficial use for highway applications. Information for this study was acquired through a literature review, and surveys and interviews with state department of transportation staff. The report will serve as a guide to states revising the provisions of their materials specifications to incorporate the use of recycled materials and industrial byproducts, and should, thereby, assist producers and users in leveling the playing field for a wide range of dissimilar materials.

Book Waste Materials in Construction

Download or read book Waste Materials in Construction written by G.R. Woolley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-05-12 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the International Conference on The Science and Engineering of Recycling for Environmental Protection (WASCON 2000), of which a number of themes have been identified. All are inter-related and inter-dependent in so far as potential users of secondary, recovered or recycled material have to be assured that the material is environmentally safe and stable. It is the environmental challenge that forms a leading theme for the conference, and the themes of quality assurance and quality control support this aspect. In terms of use of 'recovered' materials, science and engineering play important and inter-dependent roles and this is reflected in themes which form the very core of the conference. Of no less importance is control of land contamination and how we propose to model for the long term impact of our aims. However dutiful and competent our ideas and studies, there has to be a measure of control and the role of legislation forms the final theme of WASCON 2000. The breadth of studies being undertaken world-wide and the innovative ideas that are expressed in papers submitted are worthy of this important subject. It is also interesting to note that papers were offered from 30 countries, a sign of the increasing awareness of the need to preserve our natural resources and utilize to the full those with which we are more familiar. This book will contribute to the understanding of and solution of environmental problems concerning the re-use of waste materials in construction.

Book Recycling and Use of Waste Materials and By products in Highway Construction

Download or read book Recycling and Use of Waste Materials and By products in Highway Construction written by Robert J. Collins and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to administrators and policy makers; pavement, material, geotechnical, and environmental engineers; and maintenance and construction professionals involved with highway design and construction issues. Information is provided on the technical, economic, and environmental aspects (including legislative and regulatory considerations) of recycling and using waste materials and by-products in highway construction. The quantities, characteristics, possible uses, current and past research activities, and actual highway construction use of each waste material or by-product is provided. This information, based on a review of nearly 1,000 references and on responses to a 1991 survey (updated in 1993), is classified into four broad categories based on source: agricultural, domestic, industrial, and mineral wastes. A Technical Appendix to this document containing an extensive bibliography, supporting information, and details regarding the use of selected waste materials and by-products is available separately from the Transportation Research Board.

Book Framework for Evaluating Use of Recycled Materials in the Highway Environment

Download or read book Framework for Evaluating Use of Recycled Materials in the Highway Environment written by T. Taylor Eighmy and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is intended as a reference document for highway and environmental engineers who are interested in the utilization of recycled materials in the highway environment. The document provides a recommended evaluation methodology for determining the suitability of using recycled materials in highway construction. The methodology is presented in the form of a hierarchy, where more general evaluations or screenings occur in the initial steps of the evaluation, followed by more detailed laboratory and field testing, if needed, as the evaluation proceeds. Detailed tables describing recommended testing methods and criteria to be used in the evaluation are provided.

Book Plastic Waste for Sustainable Asphalt Roads

Download or read book Plastic Waste for Sustainable Asphalt Roads written by Filippo Giustozzi and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste polymers have been studied for various applications such as energy generation and biochemical production; however, their application in asphalt roads still poses some questions. Over the last decade, several studies have reported the utilization of waste plastics in roads using different methodologies and raw materials, but there is still significant inconsistency around this topic. What is the right methodology to recycle waste plastics for road applications? What is the correct type of waste plastics to be used in road applications? What environmental concerns could arise from the use of waste plastics in road applications? Plastic Waste for Sustainable Asphalt Roads covers the various processes and techniques for the utilization of waste plastics in asphalt mixes. The book discusses the various material properties and methodologies, effects of various methodologies, and combination of various polymers. It also provides information on the compatibility between bitumen and plastics, final asphalt performance, and environmental challenges. Discusses the processes and techniques for utilization of waste plastics in asphalt mixes. Features a life-cycle assessment of waste plastics in road surfaces and possible Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). Includes examples of on-field usage through various case studies.
