Book Evaluation of Retroreflective Pavement Markers for Precision and Nonprecision Runways

Download or read book Evaluation of Retroreflective Pavement Markers for Precision and Nonprecision Runways written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this program was to evaluate the use of retroreflective pavement markers, installed in a configuration duplicating runway centerline and touchdown zone lighting system of a Category II runway on Category I or Nonprecision Approach runways with edge lighting to determine if these retroreflective markers will enhance nighttime visual guidance to provide increased safety of operations and possible reduction in minimums, particularly under wet runway conditions. Visual contact height with the retroreflective pavement marker systems was not enhanced prior to reaching Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) or Decision Height (DH) for nonprecision or Category I approaches respectively; therefore, this system will not permit the reduction in approach minimums for Category I precision or nonprecision approaches. However, the test program demonstrated that the system is effective in improving the safety of operation for final approach, flare and touchdown, landing rollout, and for takeoffs. Particularly under rainy, wet nighttime conditions, the pavement retroreflector significantly enhanced the visual guidance, supplementing that provided by the standard runway edge lights and paint markings which are difficult to see under wet conditions. Book Evaluation of Retroreflective Airfield Pavement Markings Ellsworth AFB South Dakota and Tyndall AFB Florida

Download or read book Evaluation of Retroreflective Airfield Pavement Markings Ellsworth AFB South Dakota and Tyndall AFB Florida written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides details on two tests performed to determine if 1.5 Index of Refraction (IOR) glass beads are suitable retroreflective material for USA airfield markings. The tests were done at Ellsworth AFB SD from 25 Sep 91 through 9 Jun 92 and at Tyndall AFB FL from 12 Dec 93 through 24 March 95. During the first phase of the project, two taxiway centerline stripes, separated by a six-inch gap were applied on the primary aircraft taxi route at Ellsworth AFB SD. Each was reflectorized with glass beads applied at approximately the same rate, but one was reflectorized using Federal Specification TT-B-l325B, Type 1(1.5 IOR) beads and the other with Type III(1.9 IOR) beads. The test stripes were evaluated by 91 pilots and civil engineer personnel for approximately nine months through visual comparison and measurement of the retroreflective intensities of the two lines. The empirical data demonstrates the 1.5 IOR beads were more durable than were the 1.9 IOR beads. The pilots' evaluations showed that 1.5 IOR beads are suitable for airfield apron and taxiway markings. During the second phase of the project, the primary runway at Tyndall AFB FL was marked, again using the two different types of glass beads; however, these were procured under Federal Specification TT-B-1325C, an updated version modified to improve the performance of the Type III beads. The pavement markings applied on the north side of the runway centerline were reflectorized with Type I glass beads, and Type III glass beads were used 10 reflectorize the markings on the south side of the runway centerline. The test stripes were evaluated by 35 pilots and civil engineer personnel for approximately 15 months through visual comparison and measurement of the retroreflective intensities of the two lines.

Book Evaluation of Pavement Markings for Improved Visibility During Wet Night Conditions

Download or read book Evaluation of Pavement Markings for Improved Visibility During Wet Night Conditions written by Benjamin H. Cottrell and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the night visibility of waffle tape and paint with large beads, particularly during wet night conditions. Data were collected at two sites along a primary arterial. The evaluation included an examination of (1) the application of the markings, (2) the visibility of the markings using retroreflectometer measurements and subjective assessments, and (3) the costeffectiveness of the markings. The study revealed: (1) compared with paint with standard beads, the waffle tape and paint with large beads were slightly more retroreflective during light rain at night and recovered quicker after flooding out, (2) the marginal improvement in visibility during periods of light rain do not offset the operational problems of applying paint with large beads, and (3) the benefits of waffle tape during light rain do not appear to justify its use solely for wet night visibility. Because of the above findings, snowplowable raised pavement markers, which are very visible in wet night conditions, appear to be more cost-effective. The study recommends that (1) VDOT continue to use and maimain snowplowable raised pavement markers for visibility during wet night conditions, (2) VDOT continue to monitor FHWA's study on all weather pavement markings, and (3) the Suffolk District consider testing nonsnowplowable raised pavement markers to assess their use as a low-cost alternative to improve visibility during wet night conditions where snowplowing occurs infrequently.
