Book Evaluation of Recycled Asphaltic Concrete

Download or read book Evaluation of Recycled Asphaltic Concrete written by Charles S. Hughes and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a project in which approximately 6,200 tons (5,630 Mg) of asphaltic concrete were recycled through a conventional asphalt batch plant. During the construction of the project, a buildup of asphalt-coated fines occurred in the dryer and the dust collector. The buildup is thought to have been associated with the fineness and/or the high asphalt content of the recycled mix. To solve the problem, a change was made in the recycling process. The project was completed using a heat transfer method with mix proportions as high as 50% recycled material added to 50% virgin aggregate.

Book Evaluation of Cement and Fly Ash Treated Recycled Asphalt Pavement and Aggregates for Base Construction

Download or read book Evaluation of Cement and Fly Ash Treated Recycled Asphalt Pavement and Aggregates for Base Construction written by Tyson David Rupnow and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION: Many entities currently use recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and other aggregates as base materials, temporary haul roads, and, in the case of RAP, hot mix asphalt construction. Several states currently allow the use of RAP combined with cement for a stabilized base course under both asphalt and concrete pavements. Currently, there is disagreement on what properties are required and how to test the cement and fly ash treated RAP for both asphalt and concrete pavement structures. This project investigated cement and fly ash treated RAP and other materials to determine their suitability for base course construction. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research was to determine feasibility of cement and fly ash treated RAP and other aggregates as a structural layer for both portland cement concrete and hot mix asphalt pavement systems.

Book Recycled Asphalt Pavement as a Base and Sub Base Material

Download or read book Recycled Asphalt Pavement as a Base and Sub Base Material written by N. Gucunski and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory and field investigations were conducted to evaluate the use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in roadway base and sub-base applications. The laboratory resilient modulus test results showed RAP has comparable strength with dense graded aggregate base and sub-base material used in the State of New Jersey. Using the spectral-analysis-of-the-surface-waves method (SASW), the field testing program evaluated the elastic modulus of the RAP base in the field and verified the laboratory results. The field test results showed higher modulus and stiffness for RAP than the dense graded aggregate base normally used in state of New Jersey.

Book Evaluation of Recycled Aggregates Test Section Performance

Download or read book Evaluation of Recycled Aggregates Test Section Performance written by Farhad Reza and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to consider sustainability in design dictates that materials should be recycled and reused whenever possible. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is quite progressive in allowing the use of recycled aggregates in new construction. While the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in the base course of new pavements is quite common in Minnesota and many other states, it is rarely used in the concrete pavement itself. In fact, Minnesota was one of the few states to build multiple trial projects and has one of the largest number of concrete pavements constructed using the RCA in the concrete itself. The performance of those pavements, most of which are still in service, has never been formally evaluated against similar conventional concrete pavements. This prompted the current research study. Additional objectives were to assess the current state of practice across the nation, conduct experimental investigations using RCA in concrete, assess the sustainability and in particular the economics of using RCA in concrete, and finally to provide some recommendations for guidelines on using RCA in concrete. It has been shown by the authors and other researchers that it is possible to create strong and durable concrete mixtures using RCA as coarse aggregate in volume replacement levels of natural coarse aggregate up to 100%.

Book Determining Pavement Design Criteria for Recycled Aggregate Base and Large Stone Subbase

Download or read book Determining Pavement Design Criteria for Recycled Aggregate Base and Large Stone Subbase written by Bora Cetin and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was performed to evaluate the performance of recycled aggregates and large stones used in the aggregate base/subbase layers of pavement systems and provide recommendations regarding pavement design and material selection. As part of this project, eleven test cells were built at MnROAD to evaluate the impact of recycled aggregates and large stones on the long-term pavement performance via a series of laboratory [permeability, soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC), stereophotography (image analysis), gyratory compaction, and resilient modulus (MR) tests] and field tests [intelligent compaction (IC), falling weight deflectometer tests (FWD), rutting measurements, international roughness index (IRI) measurements, light weight deflectometer (LWD) tests, and dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) tests]. In addition, a pavement mechanistic-empirical (ME) design approach was used to provide recommendations for designs of pavement systems containing recycled aggregate base (RAB) and large stone subbase (LSSB) layers. Overall, this project found that finer recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) material would be preferable to coarser RCA material and a blend of RCA and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) materials would be preferable to natural aggregate for aggregate base layers. RCA materials provided better performance than the blend of RCA and RAP materials, indicating that RCA materials would be preferable to the blend. For LSSB layers, this project found that geosynthetics would be required to successfully construct thinner LSSB layers. Overall, thicker LSSB layers provided better structural support than thinner LSSB layers both in the short term and the long term.
