Book Evaluation and Assessment for Conservation

Download or read book Evaluation and Assessment for Conservation written by Ian Spellerberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most politicians have jumped on the conservation bandwagon, and nobody running for public office these days can afford to take an overtly anti environment stand. The fascination that children have for nature, the gen erous donations people make to conservation organizations, the votes cast for 'Green Parties,' the continuing popularity of zoos and wildlife films, and the strong sales of books about the environment all provide evidence to politicians that the general public supports the idea of conservation. Conservation has become a major issue for governments. No longer is it necessary for conservationists to campaign for getting the cause on the agenda: it is already there, at least as a talking point. The issue now is how to convert this generalized interest into real action. And among the many priorities competing for attention, how is a govern ment (or a private organization) to decide wh at to do first? From a very limited budget - for budgets will always be limited - what is the package of activities that is most likely to lead to the results that the public wants? lan Spellerberg attempts to address these questions which are at the he art of modern conservation action. It is relatively easy to prescribe useful activities that will benefit both the environment and the public at large.

Schortemeyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Evaluation of Water Management Practices for Optimum Wildlife Benefits in Conservation Area 3a The Everglades in its original state occupied approximately million acres south of Lake Okeechobee. This region has been aptly described as a friver of Grass by Douglas 1951. Historically the area was dominated by the sedge commonly referred to as Sawgrass. Today only about 50% of the Everglades remains undevel oped. Conservation.area 3 represents the largest remaining unit of the Everglades which is currently protected. Of the 91a square miles acres) in the Con servation.area, 750 square miles acres) lie in that portion of the pool known as 3a. Due to its size and location pool 3a is critical to the proper management of the fish and wildlife resources of the Everglades. Since the com pletion of the pool a number of incidents have illustrated the shortcomings of existing management programs. High water has caused mortality to deer and other mammals. In addition it has destroyed tree island habitat and caused nest flooding for alligators and turtles. Extremely low water levels have caused destructive peat fires, mortality to key wildlife species such as alligators and destruction of crucial tree island habitat. Book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories

Download or read book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories written by Nigel Dudley and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUCN's Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify protected areas according to their management objectives, are today accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording, and classifying protected areas. They are recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result, they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation. These guidelines provide as much clarity as possible regarding the meaning and application of the Categories. They describe the definition of the Categories and discuss application in particular biomes and management approaches.
