Book Evaluation of Potential Changes to the Space Shuttle Orbiter s Flight Control System to Increase Directional Control During Post Landing Rollout

Download or read book Evaluation of Potential Changes to the Space Shuttle Orbiter s Flight Control System to Increase Directional Control During Post Landing Rollout written by Linda J. Ham and published by . This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space Shuttle Orbiter landings indicate both long term directional instability and the potential for pilot induced oscillations during landing and rollout before nosewheel touchdown. The Orbiter's Flight Control System requires improvements to increase directional control in the two points stance (after main gear touchdown with the nose in the air). A number of modifications are proposed to improve directional control. This thesis describes the control deficiency, potential improvements to the Flight Control System (FCS), and evaluates a number of these improvements. The evaluation was performed by modeling the Orbiter's postlanding lateral/directional control laws using a commercially available engineering software package known as MATLAB 5.0. Directional control of the Orbiter was evaluated with and without the proposed modification to obtain a comparison of control response. Initial evaluation of future Orbiter FCS modifications could be performed using commercially available engineering software packages such as MATLAB; rather than costly full-up Orbiter simulators. A low cost initial evaluation of changes may save NASA resources.

Book Simulator Evaluation of Display Concepts for Pilot Monitoring and Control of Space Shuttle Approach and Landing

Download or read book Simulator Evaluation of Display Concepts for Pilot Monitoring and Control of Space Shuttle Approach and Landing written by W. B. Gartner and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the display requirements for final approach management of the space shuttle orbiter vehicle is presented. An experimental display concept, providing a more direct, pictorial representation of the vehicle's movement relative to the selected approach path and aiming points, was developed and assessed as an aid to manual flight path control. Both head-up, windshield projections and head-down, panel mounted presentations of the experimental display were evaluated in a series of simulated orbiter approach sequence. Data obtained indicate that the experimental display would enable orbiter pilots to exercise greater flexibility in implementing alternative final approach control strategies. Touchdown position and airspeed dispersion criteria were satisfied on 91 percent of the approach sequences, representing various profile and wind effect conditions. Flight path control and airspeed management satisfied operationally-relevant criteria for the two-segment, power-off orbiter approach and were consistently more accurate and less variable when the full set of experimental display elements was available to the pilot. Approach control tended to be more precise when the head-up display was used; however, the data also indicate that the head-down display would provide adequate support for the manual control task.

Book Space Shuttle Missions Summary NASA TM 2011 216142

Download or read book Space Shuttle Missions Summary NASA TM 2011 216142 written by Robert D. Legler and published by www.Militarybookshop.CompanyUK. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full color publication. This document has been produced and updated over a 21-year period. It is intended to be a handy reference document, basically one page per flight, and care has been exercised to make it as error-free as possible. This document is basically "as flown" data and has been compiled from many sources including flight logs, flight rules, flight anomaly logs, mod flight descent summary, post flight analysis of mps propellants, FDRD, FRD, SODB, and the MER shuttle flight data and inflight anomaly list. Orbit distance traveled is taken from the PAO mission statistics.

Book Performance of an Aerodynamic Yaw Controller Mounted on the Space Shuttle Orbiter Body Flap at Mach 10

Download or read book Performance of an Aerodynamic Yaw Controller Mounted on the Space Shuttle Orbiter Body Flap at Mach 10 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation of the effectiveness of an aerodynamic yaw controller mounted on the lower surface of a shuttle orbiter model body flap was conducted in the Langley 31-Inch Mach 10 Tunnel. The controller consisted of a 60 deg delta fin mounted perpendicular to the body flap lower surface and yawed 30 deg to the free stream direction. The control was tested at angles of attack from 20 deg to 40 deg at zero sideslip for a Reynolds number based on wing mean aerodynamic chord of 0.66 x 10(exp 6). The aerodynamic and control effectiveness characteristics are presented along with an analysis of the effectiveness of the controller in making a bank maneuver for Mach 18 flight conditions. The controller was effective in yaw and produced a favorable rolling moment. The analysis showed that the controller was as effective as the reaction control system in making the bank maneuver. These results warrant further studies of the aerodynamic/aerothermodynamic characteristics of the control concept for application to future transportation vehicles. Scallion, W. I.
