Book Global Perspectives on Reforming the Criminal Justice System

Download or read book Global Perspectives on Reforming the Criminal Justice System written by Pittaro, Michael and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The often-tenuous relationship between law enforcement and communities of color, namely African Americans, has grown increasingly strained, and the call for justice has once again ignited the demand for criminal justice reform. Rebuilding the trust between the police and the citizens that they have sworn to protect and serve requires that criminal justice practitioners and educators collaborate with elected officials and commit to an open, ongoing dialogue on the most challenging issues that remain unresolved but demand collective attention and support. Reform measures are not limited to policing policies and practices, but rather extend throughout the criminal justice system. There is no denying that the criminal justice system as we know it is flawed, but not beyond repair. Global Perspectives on Reforming the Criminal Justice System provides in-depth and current research about the criminal justice system around the world, its many inadequacies, and why it urgently needs reformation. Offering a fully fleshed outline of the current system, this book details the newest research and is incredibly important to fully understand the flaws of the criminal justice system across the globe. The goals of this book are to improve and advance the criminal justice system by addressing the glaring weaknesses within the system and discuss potential reforms including decreasing the prison population (decarceration) and improving police/community relations. Highlighting topics that include accountability, community-oriented policing, ethics, and mass incarceration, this book is ideal for law enforcement officers, trainers/educators, government officials, policymakers, correctional officers, court officials, professionals, researchers, academicians, and students in the fields of criminal justice, criminology, sociology, psychology, addictions, mental health, social work, public policy, and public administration.

Book Law Enforcement and Community Relations

Download or read book Law Enforcement and Community Relations written by Richard E. Farmer and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This re-examination of the police community relations concept looks at functions of existing programs and suggests ways in which police agencies may use such programs to enhance activities of the entire department. A basic premise of this book is two-fold: that the police must accept responsibility for providing a wide variety of non-enforcement functions; and that increasing accountability to the community will be a major public concern in the future. The positive role that a comprehensive police community relations program can play in any department is emphasized and measures to implement and evaluate programs are stressed. Included are numerous case studies which illustrate what happens when line officers practice the techniques of behavioral science. Also discussed are two original, never before published studies - one covering community attitudes and the other the police relationship to social service agencies.

Book Police Community Relations

Download or read book Police Community Relations written by Charles D. Hale and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is written to meet the need to heal the wounds between the police and the public. This document presents the basic concepts of police-community relations as they apply to law enforcement in contemporary society. Following the introduction which discusses the evolving police role, the need for positive police community relations, and the American police system, comments are made on obstacles to police community relations. Topics covered include the misuse of police authority, complaints against the police, and the police and civil disorders. Police relations with the public are then highlighted, focusing on public attitudes toward the police, the police and racial minorities, and police relations with the news media. Attention is also given to police public relations programs, crime prevention programs, youth-oriented programs, and police community relations programs. By drawing upon the experiences and innovations of a great many police departments throughout the United States, the author presents a sampling of illustrative and interesting ideas that bear on the subject. To give the student opportunities to apply his understanding of the concepts presented in the document and to evaluate his own progress, a variety of material is offered for student involvement and review. The review material consists of several kinds of objective questions, including the multiple-choice type often found on promotional examinations. Answers to these questions are included in the text. An instructor's guide is also available which outlines the author's approach to possible solutions for the hypothetical problem situations, while stressing that there are no absolutes when dealing with interpersonal relations.

Book Evaluating Police Uses of Force

Download or read book Evaluating Police Uses of Force written by Seth W. Stoughton and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a critical understanding and evaluation of police tactics and the use of force Police violence has historically played an important role in shaping public attitudes toward the government. Community trust and confidence in policing have been undermined by the perception that officers are using force unnecessarily, too frequently, or in problematic ways. The use of force, or harm suffered by a community as a result of such force, can also serve as a flashpoint, a spark that ignites long-simmering community hostility. In Evaluating Police Uses of Force, legal scholar Seth W. Stoughton, former deputy chief of police Jeffrey J. Noble, and distinguished criminologist Geoffrey P. Alpert explore a critical but largely overlooked facet of the difficult and controversial issues of police violence and accountability: how does society evaluate use-of-force incidents? By leading readers through answers to this question from four different perspectives—constitutional law, state law, administrative regulation, and community expectations—and by providing critical information about police tactics and force options that are implicated within those frameworks, Evaluating Police Uses of Force helps situate readers within broader conversations about governmental accountability, the role that police play in modern society, and how officers should go about fulfilling their duties.
