Book Evaluation of Ozone and Ultraviolet Light

Download or read book Evaluation of Ozone and Ultraviolet Light written by R. Hulsey and published by International Water Assn. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were to: *evaluate the benefits of ultraviolet light (UV) and ozone and determine how to integrate the two disinfection systems efficiently; *compare medium pressure UV light (MP-UV) with the combination of ozone and MP-UV to determine their effectiveness in meeting CT requirements for inactivation of Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and viruses, especially in cold water; and *compare the effects of MP-UV and the combination of ozone and MP-UV on the formation of disinfection by-products, DBP precursors, and the biostability/bacterial regrowth potential. Protozoan parasites are a major public health concern as evidenced by waterborne outbreaks of Cryptosporidium in the early 1990s. USEPA regulators have proposed new regulations which require site-specific means corresponding to the source water for the removal or inactivation of Cryptosporidium. For water systems with vulnerable sources, UV disinfection offers a cost effective approach. Utilities that have already installed ozone systems and those considering a multiple barrier approach to disinfection are interested in the effectiveness of UV alone and UV combined with ozone.

Book Evaluation of Ozone Oxidation and UV Degradation of Dimethylnitrosamine

Download or read book Evaluation of Ozone Oxidation and UV Degradation of Dimethylnitrosamine written by Edmund A. Kobylinski and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dimethylnitrosamine was detected in the wastewater leaving Holston Army ammunition Plant. The wastewater from the ammonia stripping column was treated with (1) ozone, (2) ultraviolet light, and (3) a combination of both ozone and ultraviolet light. Ozone alone does not degrade DMN. Ultraviolet degrades DMN yielding first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 1/0.025 min. A special run using UV was performed on the feed to the ammonia stripping column and it also yielded first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 1/0.044 min. (Author).

Book Ultraviolet Light in Water and Wastewater Sanitation 2002

Download or read book Ultraviolet Light in Water and Wastewater Sanitation 2002 written by Willy J. Masschelein and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several general books are available on ultraviolet light and its applications. However, this is the first comprehensive monograph that deals with its application to water and wastewater treatment. There is a rapidly growing interest in using UV light in water sanitation due to the increased knowledge of the potential health and environmental impacts of disinfection byproducts. Ultraviolet Light in Water and Wastewater Sanitation integrates the fundamental physics applicable to water and wastewater sanitation, the engineering aspects, and the practical experience in the field. The text analyzes the concerns associated with this application of UV light and brings together comprehensive information on the presently available UV technologies applicable to water and wastewater treatment including: lamp technologies, criteria of evaluation and choice of technology; fundamental principles; performance criteria for disinfection; design criteria and methods; synergistic use of UV and oxidants (advanced oxidation); and functional requirements and potential advantages and drawbacks of the technique. Ultraviolet Light in Water and Wastewater Sanitation is the only treatise currently available combining fundamental knowledge, recommendations for design, evaluations of performance, and future prospects for this application. Water and wastewater treatment professionals, water utility employees, governmental regulators, and chemists will find this book an essential and unique reference for a technology which has received growing regulatory acceptance.

Book Evaluation of Ultraviolet Ozone Treatment of Rocky Mountain Arsenal RMA Groundwater Treatability Study

Download or read book Evaluation of Ultraviolet Ozone Treatment of Rocky Mountain Arsenal RMA Groundwater Treatability Study written by Robert E. Buhts and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) has been a chemical manufacturing and chemical demilitarization facility since 1942. Wastes from various chemical processes were discharged into unlined basins until construction of an asphalt-lined evaporation lake was completed in 1955. Repeated contact of rainwater and groundwater with chemical wastes in and beneath the basins has resulted in transport of chemical compounds toward the boundaries of RMA. The groundwater at RMA is known to be contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons, organophosphorous, organosulfur, and other organic compounds. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of using ultraviolet/ozone (UV/O3) treatment to reduce the concentration of those contaminants in the RMA groundwater. This report discusses the experimental results obtained from treating RMA groundwater with UV light and ozone. The laboratory investigations used two different batch reactors and varied such parameters as ozone concentration, temperature, and wattage of UV light. Continuous flow experiments were also conducted. In batch experiments, total organic carbon removal ranged from 40 to 90 percent. The concentrations of diisopropylmethylphosphonate (DIMP) and other organic compounds were significantly reduced. In the continuous flow phase of the study, it was possible to remove 93 percent of the DIMP originally present and lower the levels of all other organic contaminants to below detectable limits. Book Ozone Variability Assessment for UV Sensors

Download or read book Ozone Variability Assessment for UV Sensors written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultraviolet transmission over a 1-kilometre horizontal path in the centre of the solar-blind region (240-280 nanometres) varies by a factor of 6 over the range of surface ozone values which occurs naturally. As a result, the surface ozone concentration is the most significant unknown in modelling ultraviolet concentration, with consequences for modelling and simulation studies related to ultraviolet sensors such as those used in missile warning systems. This report summarizes available information on the sources and sinks of ozone in the troposphere, its geographic distribution, its seasonal or diurnal variation, and the range of variability. Correlations with meteorological variables and approaches to estimating and forecasting surface ozone are also discussed. Appendices include tables and graphs of seasonal ozone concentrations at various Canadian locations.

Book Ozone in Water Treatment

Download or read book Ozone in Water Treatment written by Bruno Langlais and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986, many water utilities are reexamining their water treatment practices. Upcoming new regulations on disinfection and on disinfection by-products, in particular, are the primary driving forces for the big interest in ozone. It appears that ozone, with its strong disinfection capabilities, and apparently lower levels of disinfection by-products (compared to other disinfectants), may be the oxidant/disinfectant of choice. Many utilities currently using chlorine for oxidation may need to switch due to chlorine by-product concerns. Utilities using chloramines may need to use ozone to meet CT requirements. This book, prepared by 35 international experts, includes current technology on the design, operation, and control of the ozone process within a drinking water plant. It combines almost 100 years of European ozone design and operating experience with North American design/operations experience and the North American regulatory and utility operational environment. Topics covered include ozone chemistry, toxicology, design consideration, engineering aspects, design of retrofit systems, and the operation and economics of ozone technology. The book contains a "how to" section on ozone treatability studies, which explains what information can be learned using treatability studies, at what scale (bench, pilot, or demonstration plant), and how this information can be used to design full-scale systems. It also includes valuable tips regarding important operating practices, as well as guidance on retrofits and the unique issues involved with retrofitting the ozone process. With ozone being one of the hottest areas of interest in drinking water, this book will prove essential to all water utilities, design engineers, regulators, and plant managers and supervisors.
