Book Nondestructive Vibratory Testing of Airport Pavements Volume 1 Experimental Test Results and Development of Evaluation Methodology and Procedure

Download or read book Nondestructive Vibratory Testing of Airport Pavements Volume 1 Experimental Test Results and Development of Evaluation Methodology and Procedure written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional direct sampling methods of airport pavement evaluation interfere with aircraft operations; therefore, an evaluation procedure based on nondestructive vibratory testing was developed. The procedure considers the parameters of pavement thickness and strength, soil strength, landing gear characteristics, and load repetition through correlation of FAA direct sampling procedures with the nondestructive data from termed the dynamic stiffness modulus, which is calculated from a vibratory load-deflection graph. The results indicated the need for standardized vibratory testing equipment, and specifications for a suggested model were written. Evaluation procedures were developed for rigid and flexible pavements which consider the environmental factors of temperature and frost-thaw action, the importance of test locations and quantities, and stabilized layers. Appendix A presents results of two correlations: (a) elastic deflection and pavement performance and (b) dynamic E- modulus and CBR. Appendix B presents the nondestructive testing and performance results on U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station test sections and the effects of bound pavement thickness on the nondestructive test results in an attempt to develop overlay design. Appendix C gives procurement specifications for recommended nondestructive test equipment.

Book Nondestructive Testing of Pavements Final Test Results and Evaluation Procedure

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing of Pavements Final Test Results and Evaluation Procedure written by J. W Hall (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents results for an investigation to develop techniques of nondestructive evaluation of the load-carrying capacity of airfield pavements. Tests were performed with vibratory equipment on pavements where conventional pavement parameters were also measured. Two evaluation approaches, deflection-extrapolation and stiffness methods, are discussed. The nondestructive stiffness method was found to relate to conventional pavement evaluation criteria. Results of the study showed the reliability of the nondestructive pavement evaluation, and a proposed nondestructive evaluation procedure was developed. The equipment used is described in detail, and recommendations are given for improvements to the equipment. (Author).

Book Nondestructive Testing of Pavements Tests on Multiple Wheel Heavy Gear Load Sections and Eglin and Hurlburt Airfields

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing of Pavements Tests on Multiple Wheel Heavy Gear Load Sections and Eglin and Hurlburt Airfields written by J. W Hall (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents results of a study to develop techniques using vibratory testing equipment for nondestructive airfield pavement evaluation. Testing was primarily concentrated on the multiple-wheel heavy gear load (MWHGL) flexible and rigid pavement test sections, but some additional tests were performed on prototype pavements at Eglin AFB, Florida, and Hurlburt Airfield, Florida. High-frequency steady-state vibration tests were used to measure shear wave velocity and dynamic moduli of elasticity were computed for each pavement layer. Low-frequency steady-state vibration tests were used to measure dynamic force and deflection on the pavement sections. (Author).

Book Concepts for the Development of a Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation System for Rigid Airfield Pavements

Download or read book Concepts for the Development of a Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation System for Rigid Airfield Pavements written by Paul Thomas Foxworthy and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis develops a complete system for nondestructive testing and evaluation of rigid airfield pavements. An extensive review of present destructive and nondestructive equipment and methodologies is made to form the basis for selection of the equipment and analytical model used in this research. A brief description of the selected Dynatest Model 8000 Falling Weight Deflectometer and the ILLISLAB finite element computer model is presented. Three Air Force installations were chosen for in-depth study of pavement response to FWD loads under a variety of environmental and geological conditions. Techniques are presented to determine the location of maximum damage to rigid pavement slabs for one or any combination of aircraft, and the validity of the calculated stresses is established through comparisons of measured and predicted deflections at joints. Major study findings include: (1) new designations for pavement features based on actual loading conditions, (2) guidelines for planning and conducting large scale evaluations of major airfield systems, (3) a computer-based determination of E and K, (4) joint behavior prediction under fluctuating temperatures and their effect on generated slab stresses, (5) procedures to account for the annual distribution of traffic over the range of temperatures normally experienced at any facility, (6) a simplistic means of estimating total past damage from aircraft operations, and (7) development of computer programs to predict remaining structural life of rigid airfield pavements.

Book Evaluation of an Impulse Testing Technique for Nondestructive Testing of Pavements

Download or read book Evaluation of an Impulse Testing Technique for Nondestructive Testing of Pavements written by John P. Nielsen and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results of a study concerned with the evaluation of a proposed technique to perform nondestructive load evaluations of airfield pavements. This technique consists of determining the speed of propagation of the phase velocities through the various layers of a pavement system. A research plan to further develop the technique is also recommended. This plan contains statements of work, equipment recommendations, a proposed budget, and a schedule. (Author).

Book USAF Wave Propagation NDT Method

Download or read book USAF Wave Propagation NDT Method written by J. Amend and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews U.S. Air Force efforts to find a nondestructive testing (NDT) method for evaluating airfield pavement load-carrying capabilities. The paper concentrates its discussion on the wave propagation nondestructive testing method for evaluation of airfield pavements. The method was used by the Air Force from 1983 to 1985. The information given for the wave propagation method includes the theoretical background, test equipment and procedures, methods of test data analysis, and pavement analysis procedures. Also presented are: comparisons of results between the wave propagation NDT and destructive evaluation methods; reasons for the Air Force moving away from the wave propagation method; ongoing research; and possible future use of the wave propagation method.
