Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway engineers are facing the challenge not only to design and construct sustainable and safe pavements properly and economically. This implies a thorough understanding of materials behaviour, their appropriate use in the continuously changing environment, and implementation of constantly improved technologies and methodologies. Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements VII contains more than 100 contributions that were presented at the 7th International Conference ‘Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements’ (7ICONFBMP, Thessaloniki, Greece 12-14 June 2019). The papers cover a wide range of topics: - Bituminous binders - Aggregates, unbound layers and subgrade - Bituminous mixtures (Hot, Warm and Cold) - Pavements (Design, Construction, Maintenance, Sustainability, Energy and environment consideration) - Pavement management - Pavement recycling - Geosynthetics - Pavement assessment, surface characteristics and safety - Posters Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements VII reflects recent advances in highway materials technology and pavement engineering, and will be of interest to academics and professionals interested or involved in these areas.

Book Modified Asphalt

Download or read book Modified Asphalt written by Jose Luis Rivera Armenta and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt modification is an important area in the development of new road and pavement materials. There is an urgent demand for road materials that can minimize fracture at low temperatures and increase resistance to deformation at high temperatures. The function of asphalt is to bind aggregate to protect it from water and other harmful agents. In the beginning asphalt was ideal for this purpose, but recently traffic loads have increased and environmental factors have deteriorated more rapidly than before. Asphalt is a byproduct of crude oil in the refining process, and it is considered a complex heterogeneous mixture of hydrocarbons. Asphalt modification has become an important research area, using several methods and new materials as modifiers.

Book Evaluation of a Modified Asphalt

Download or read book Evaluation of a Modified Asphalt written by G. W. Maupin and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of increased traffic loads and truck tire pressures over the last few years, the rutting of asphalt pavements has worsened. Additives such as polymers are being used in an attempt to improve the performance of these pavements. One such product is Novophalt, which is the registered trademark of an asphalt modified with 4 to 6 percent of a polyolefin polymer, primarily polyethylene. A Novophalt surface mixture was used near an intersection on a new construction project to guard against rutting caused by heavy trucks. This study evaluated the construction and performance of sections of pavement with control and Novophalt mixtures at this location. The polymer-modified mixture was manufactured, placed, and compacted with no difficulty. Severe ruts developed in both the control and Novophalt sections under stopped traffic near the traffic light. The rutting was found to be caused by a weak base mixture under the Novophalt surface; the rutting under the control mixture was probably also related to the base mixture. No significant rutting occurred in the control and Novophalt sections in the areas not subjected to severe traffic loads. Although the comparison between the control and Novophalt mixtures was vitiated by the performance of the underlying base mixture, the project demonstrated that construction with the Novophalt mixture could be accomplished satisfactorily.

Book Evaluation of Engineering Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete for the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design

Download or read book Evaluation of Engineering Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete for the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data evaluation of the test results indicated the increase of nominal maximum size aggregate amount by 5% to 15% to the standard coarse mix designs had negligible effect on HMA fracture mechanics properties. The SBS polymer-modified asphalt binder improved the fracture mechanics behavior of asphalt mixtures comprehensively. The limestone materials hold advantages over granite materials in improving the performance of thermal cracking at low service temperatures and the rutting resistance at high service temperatures. The master curve construction and linear regression analysis indicated that the total resilient modulus increased with an increase in dynamic modulus at a specific loading frequency. The resilient modulus values were comparable with the dynamic modulus values at the loading frequency of 4 Hz. A correlation relationship was developed for predicting the dynamic modulus from existing resilient modulus values of the asphalt concrete mixture in implementing the mechanistic-empirical pavement design.
