Book In vehicle Evaluation of Milled Rumble Strips at Pre and Post chip Sealed Maintenance Periods

Download or read book In vehicle Evaluation of Milled Rumble Strips at Pre and Post chip Sealed Maintenance Periods written by Ernest Tufuor and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this report is to conduct a controlled experiment to understand the relationship between milled [rumble strips] RS to understand the relationship between milled RS depth and noise and vibration in the vehicle cab. In-vehicle noise and vibration levels were collected on five different RS depths (i.e., 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8"), on three RS types (i.e., shoulder, single centerline, and double centerline), on three highways in the state of Nebraska, and using two vehicles traveling at speeds of 45 mph, 55 mph, and 65 mph. RS depths at 1/8" intervals were used to stimulate the influence of a chip-seal on the RS effectiveness. On the basis of the in-vehicle sound and vibration levels of all the tested RS depths, it was shown in this research that 1/8" reduction in the current milled RS design depth, as a result of chip-sealing, does not result in a practical reduction in the RS effectiveness at producing audible and tactile warnings to alert drivers" (page viii).

Book Guidance for the Design and Application of Shoulder and Centerline Rumble Strips

Download or read book Guidance for the Design and Application of Shoulder and Centerline Rumble Strips written by Darren J. Torbic and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2009 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides guidance for the design and application of shoulder and centerline rumble strips as an effective crash reduction measure, while minimizing adverse effects for motorcyclists, bicyclists, and nearby residents. Using the results of previous studies and the research conducted under this project, safety effectiveness estimates were developed for shoulder rumble strips on rural freeways and rural two-lane roads and for centerline rumble strips on rural and urban two-lane roads.

Book An Assessment of Various Rumble Strip Designs and Pavements Markings Applications for Crosswalks and Work Zones

Download or read book An Assessment of Various Rumble Strip Designs and Pavements Markings Applications for Crosswalks and Work Zones written by Melisa Dayle Finley and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic control devices applied to the pavement can provide a significant amount of information for the driver. The objective of this research was to assess the effectiveness of various pavement marking materials, devices, and treatments that have potential to increase driver awareness and safety. The following pavement marking materials, devices, and treatments were investigated as part of this research project: . yellow-green crosswalk material, . in-roadway warning lights, . fluorescent orange retroreflective raised pavement markers, . "removable" pavement marking paint, and . rumble strips. This report includes recommendations for the application of in-roadway warning lights and rumble strips. Further research is needed on the yellow-green crosswalk material, fluorescent orange retroreflective raised pavement markers, and the "removable" pavement marking paint before application guidelines can be developed.

Book Centerline Rumble Strips

Download or read book Centerline Rumble Strips written by Eugene Russell and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2005 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 339: Centerline Rumble Strips (CLRS) examines current design, installation, configuration, dimension, and visibility issues associated with CLRS. The report addresses the need for guidance on warrants, benefits, successful practices, and concerns such as external noise and the reduced visibility of centerline striping material. Also addressed are pavement deterioration, ice buildup in the grooves, adverse impact on emergency vehicles, and the effect of CLRS on bicyclists. Particular attention was paid to available before-and-after CLRS installation crash data to document the safety aspects of CLRS and the availability of policies, guidelines, warrants, and costs regarding their use and design.
