Book Coliforms

Download or read book Coliforms written by Geoffrey McCoy and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coliforms are widely used as indicators of water quality and sanitary status, and levels are regulated as standards and legislation in many jurisdictions. The group of organisms known as coliform bacteria are commonly used to gauge quality and potential for health risk of potable and recreational waters, and are stimulated in water quality standards and legislation of many jurisdictions worldwide. The contents of this book includes an overview about the involvement of biofilms in waterborne diseases; currently employed methods of analysis for coliform bacteria; the testing of coliformic bacteria for water departments using automated sampling and analysis; the prevalence of E.coli outbreaks linked to the consumption of certain products; and finally, a review of the sources of coliform bacteria in freshwaters.

Download or read book The Coliform Index and Waterborne Disease written by Cara Gleeson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-12-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade there has been a rapid increase in waterborne outbreaks of disease associated with viral and protozoan agents, normally in drinking waters that were found to be microbially safe using the Coliform Index. For nearly a quarter of a century indicator organisms, in particular the coliform group, have been used to ensure the microbial

Book Handbook of Online and Near real time Methods in Microbiology

Download or read book Handbook of Online and Near real time Methods in Microbiology written by Maximilian Lackner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid detection and indication of the microbiological quality of liquids is an emerging topic that has high potential for numerous applications in the fields of environmental monitoring, industrial process control and medical surveillance. Latest technologies allow online and near-real-time quantitative or qualitative microbial measurements with a significantly higher temporal resolution than traditional methods. Such novel developments will significantly enhance quality monitoring of water resources and liquids and have great capability for automation, control and optimization of industrial processes. Therefore, such methods are assumed to have major impacts on scientific research and technical applications in the near future. The book presents cutting edge research on frontiers in microbiological detection from leading experts: Seven chapters containing review articles on emerging and state-of-the-art online and near-real-time methods of microorganism detection and – indication are giving a comprehensive insight into this novel field. A balance between chapters from industry and contributions from academia was aimed for, covering the broad field of microbiological quality of waters and liquids in environmental, industrial and medical systems. This handbook also contains an extensive glossary pointing out and describing relevant terms and definitions. This handbook is the first of its kind and is a timely, comprehensive source of information for researchers and engineers in the areas of biotechnology, environmental sciences, control technology and the process industries.

Book Development of a Methodology for the Rapid Detection of Coliform Bacteria

Download or read book Development of a Methodology for the Rapid Detection of Coliform Bacteria written by A. M. Cundell and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is described for the detection and quantification of coliform bacteria in less than 1-1/2 hours. The detection method is based on the presence of beta-D-galactosidase activity within this class of bacteria. The biochemical reactions exploited in the BioResearch rapid detection method are (1) induction of beta-galactosidase within E. coli by the inducer isopropyl thio beta-D-galactopyranoside (IPTG), (2) transport of the fluorescein-conjugated substrate fluorescein di beta-D-galactopyranoside (FDG) into the bacterial cells and (3) hydrolysis of the substrate to liberate the fluorescent dye fluorescein. This is followed by the detection of the fluorescein dye, whose absorption and fluorescence spactra are well known. (Author).

Book Indicators for Waterborne Pathogens

Download or read book Indicators for Waterborne Pathogens written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent and forecasted advances in microbiology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry have made it timely to reassess the current paradigm of relying predominantly or exclusively on traditional bacterial indicators for all types of waterborne pathogens. Nonetheless, indicator approaches will still be required for the foreseeable future because it is not practical or feasible to monitor for the complete spectrum of microorganisms that may occur in water, and many known pathogens are difficult to detect directly and reliably in water samples. This comprehensive report recommends the development and use of a "tool box" approach by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and others for assessing microbial water quality in which available indicator organisms (and/or pathogens in some cases) and detection method(s) are matched to the requirements of a particular application. The report further recommends the use of a phased, three-level monitoring framework to support the selection of indicators and indicator approaches.Â

Book Development of Practical Methods to Assess the Presence of Bacterial Pathogens in Water

Download or read book Development of Practical Methods to Assess the Presence of Bacterial Pathogens in Water written by W. A. Yanko and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to develop and evaluate a practical technique to indicate the probability of the presence of bacterial pathogens in receiving waters. A practical method was defined as one that would limit the use of defined culture-based microbiological methods, and would be based on: (1) validating indicator organisms that predicted the presence of pathogens, or (2) detection of pathogens by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays. The study also assessed the utility of PCR-based technology for bacterial pathogen detection with respect to technology transfer to a wider range of water and wastewater facilities.
