Book Evaluation of Pedestrian Safety Policies and Practices on California State Highways

Download or read book Evaluation of Pedestrian Safety Policies and Practices on California State Highways written by Julie Blue and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains the nationwide "best practices" related to pedestrian transportation and safety. Contributions to the best practices included 50 State Departments of Transportation, the 50 largest U.S. cities, and 12 Metropolitan Planning Organizations. The document also presents a review of current practices of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and compares them to other best practices. In addition to general recommendations, specific recommendations are given regarding practices that Caltrans should maintain, study, and implement.

Book Evaluation of High speed Isolated Signalized Intersections in California

Download or read book Evaluation of High speed Isolated Signalized Intersections in California written by Simon Washington and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed isolated signalized intersections (HSISI's) are generally encountered after long uninterrupted and uncongested flow conditions, thereby catching some motorists by surprise. For this reason alone, approaches to HSISI's need to have safe and effective warning, control, and intersection geometric treatments. This research identified characteristics at California HSISI's that relate to accident rates. A data base consisting of approximately 100 intersection and approach variables was established and used to investigate advance warning, signal timing and phasing, channelization, signal equipment configurations, shoulder widths and types, median widths and types, and approach speeds.

Book Evaluation of Safety Strategies at Signalized Intersections

Download or read book Evaluation of Safety Strategies at Signalized Intersections written by Raghavan Srinivasan and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 705: Evaluation of Safety Strategies at Signalized Intersections explores crash modification factors (CMFs) for safety strategies at signalized intersections. CMFs are a tool for quickly estimating the impact of safety improvements.

Book Safety Effects of Marked Versus Unmarked Crosswalks at Uncontrolled Locations

Download or read book Safety Effects of Marked Versus Unmarked Crosswalks at Uncontrolled Locations written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedestrians are legitimate users of the transportation system, and they should, therefore, be able to use this system safely. Pedestrian needs in crossing streets should be identified, and appropriate solutions should be selected to improve pedestrian safety and access. Deciding where to mark crosswalks is only one consideration in meeting that objective. The purpose of this study was to determine whether marked crosswalks at uncontrolled locations are safer than unmarked crosswalks under various traffic and roadway conditions. Another objective was to provide recommendations on how to provide safer crossings for pedestrians. This study involved an analysis of 5 years of pedestrian crashes at 1,000 marked crosswalks and 1,000 matched unmarked comparison sites. All sites in this study had no traffic signal or stop sign on the approaches. Detailed data were collected on traffic volume, pedestrian exposure, number of lanes, median type, speed limit, and other site variables. Poisson and negative binomial regressive models were used.

Book Pedestrian Facilities Users Guide Providing Safety and Mobility

This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is intended to provide information on how to identify safety and mobility needs for pedestrians with the roadway right-of-way. Useful for engineers, planners, safety professionals and decision-makers, the guide covers such topics as: the Walking Environment including sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, roadway lighting and pedestrian over and under passes; Roadway Design including bicycle lanes, roadway narrowing, reducing the number of lanes, one-way/two-way streets, right-turn slip lanes and raised medians; Intersections with roundabouts, T-intersections and median barriers; and Traffic calming designs.

Book Safety and Guidelines for Marked and Unmarked Pedestrian Crosswalks at Unsignalized Intersections in Nevada

Download or read book Safety and Guidelines for Marked and Unmarked Pedestrian Crosswalks at Unsignalized Intersections in Nevada written by Yue Zhao and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines two aspects of marked and unmarked crosswalks at unsignalized intersections. Firstly, the report assesses the safety performance of marked/unmarked crosswalks in Nevada through comparing pedestrian-related crash rates. In which, a linear regression model is established to estimate pedestrian daily volume. Consistent with previous research, it is found that marked crosswalks do involve higher pedestrian-related crash rates in Nevada. In addition, the report proposes a set of guidelines for marking crosswalks at unsignalized intersections through a comprehensive process. It summarizes existing guidelines including the MUTCD guideline, FHWA guideline and etc. in the literature review. The report further points out that one of the major issues lies in the lack of comprehensive consideration and interpretation of potential factors. Considering safety and mobility effects, it suggests the contribution of each factor to the decision making not only depends on its own value but also the association with other factors. Hence, the report summarizes key impact factors and applies revised multi-criteria analysis methods to develop a Mark/Unmark Choice Tool embedded in the guideline. At last, the proposed guideline is applied in a case study involving field data in Nevada to demonstrate its practicability and feasibility.
