Book excerpt: The recycling technique of asphalt pavement materials has been used in the past decade, however, unsolved problems still exist such as rutting or instability. The slow reaction of the softening agents or the new binders or both may be responsible for this phenomenon. The viscosity of the binder in the cold-recycled pavement materials mixed with emulsified asphalts is experimentally analyzed by evaluating certain rheological characteristics of the mixture using the creep test at three temperatures. The properties of the recycled mixture are determined at both early and accelerated long-term aging and the results are compared with the properties of virgin materials. Master creep curves are developed using the time-temperature superposition technique. The creep behavior of the recycled asphalt mixture used in this study does not support the hypothesis of the long-term reaction between the emulsified asphalt and the reclaimed materials. In addition, the bulk specific gravity and the retained moisture in the compacted recycled mixture were evaluated at various ages.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Cold in-place recycling (CIR) has become an attractive method for rehabilitating asphalt roads that have good subgrade support and are suffering distress related to non-structural aging and cracking of the pavement layer. Although CIR is widely used, its use could be expanded if its performance were more predictable. Transportation officials have observed roads that were recycled under similar circumstances perform very differently for no clear reason. Moreover, a rational mix design has not yet been developed, design assumptions regarding the structural support of the CIR layer remain empirical and conservative, and there is no clear understanding of the cause-effect relationships between the choices made during the design/construction process and the resulting performance. The objective of this project is to investigate these relationships, especially concerning the age of the recycled pavement, cumulative traffic volume, support conditions, aged engineering properties of the CIR materials, and road performance. Twenty-four CIR asphalt roads constructed in Iowa from 1986 to 2004 were studied: 18 were selected from a sample of roads studied in a previous research project (HR-392), and 6 were selected from newer CIR projects constructed after 1999. This report describes the results of comprehensive field and laboratory testing for these CIR asphalt roads. The results indicate that the modulus of the CIR layer and the air voids of the CIR asphalt binder were the most important factors affecting CIR pavement performance for high-traffic roads. For low-traffic roads, the wet indirect tensile strength significantly affected pavement performance. The results of this research can help identify changes that should be made with regard to design, material selection, and construction in order to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of future recycled roads.

Book excerpt: The trend towards using recycled materials on new construction projects is growing as the cost for construction materials are ever increasing and the awareness of the responsibility we have to be good stewards of our environment is heightened. While recycled asphalt is sometimes used in pavements, its use as structural fill has been hindered by concern that it is susceptible to large long-term deformations (creep), preventing its use for a great many geotechnical applications. While asphalt/soil blends are often proposed as an alternative to 100% recycled asphalt fill, little data is available characterizing the geotechnical properties of recycled asphalt soil blends. In this dissertation, the geotechnical properties for five different recycled asphalt soil blends are characterized. Data includes the particle size distribution, plasticity index, creep, and shear strength for each blend. Blends with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% recycled asphalt were tested. As the recycled asphalt material used for testing had particles sizes up to 1.5 inches, a large 18 inch diameter direct shear apparatus was used to determine the shear strength and creep characteristics of the material. The results of the testing program confirm that the creep potential of recycled asphalt is a geotechnical concern when the material is subjected to loads greater than 1500 pounds per square foot (psf). In addition, the test results demonstrate that the amount of soil blended with the recycled asphalt can greatly influence the creep and shear strength behavior of the composite material. Furthermore, there appears to be an optimal blend ratio where the composite material had better properties than either the recycled asphalt or virgin soil alone with respect to shear strength.

Book excerpt: Many current methods of designing and testing Cold In-Place Recycled (CIR) asphalt are undesirable because they require large amounts of material and significant preparation. In an effort to lessen the cost and time of materials testing, this research utilizes several different methods of small scale testing of creep stiffness. These methods include using a Discovery Hybrid Rheometer (DHR) and a three point bending test to find the creep stiffness of emulsion based CIR. The new testing methods utilized samples on the scale of up to a hundredth the size of what the traditional methods of testing require. The two smaller scale tests were compared to the traditional Indirect Tension Test (IDT) testing. In order to fully evaluate the two reduced sample size test methods, this research observed the effect of gradation, temperature, emulsifier type, and Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) content on creep stiffness. If successful, the use of these new test methods could significantly decrease the damage done to roads, and reduce the cost of material management incurred through the quality control testing methods for pavement. Results showed very good correlation between DHR and IDT testing with a proportional difference between the samples. The standard deviations between the DHR and IDT testing were 18.6% and 19.2% of the mean values respectively, indicating similar accuracies of tests. The tests were also able to distinguish between types of material. The proportional difference between the IDT and DHR is expected and is due to the difference of sample and loading configuration. This research begins the validation of using smaller scale DHR tests for CIR stiffness testing.

The results of this research can help identify changes that should be made with regard to design, material selection, and construction in order to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of future recycled roads.

Book excerpt: Cold recycling (CR) is a partial recycling process through which a portion of the existing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) material is rejuvenated and placed back on the road as a new base course without introducing heat during the recycling process. Although CR technology is not a new concept, it has not been understood as well as Hot Mixture Asphalt (HMA) and Warm Mixture Asphalt (WMA). Currently, a nationwide standard for CR mixture design does not exist. Furthermore, sufficient data is not available to indicate if there is a difference between the performance of cold mixtures stabilized with conventional emulsions versus those stabilized with polymer modified emulsions.In this thesis, the performance of lab produced CR specimens with conventional asphalt emulsion and polymer modified asphalt emulsion is investigated through conducting a series of tests. CR specimens were prepared in precise procedures to ensure reliable and consistent specimen production for testing. Through basic volumetric measurements and performance related tests including strength, durability, moisture damage resistance, and rutting resistance, a general CR mixture design procedure was established. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine the difference between performance of CR mixtures modified with conventional and polymer modified emulsion. Although no significantdifference in performance was observed for most of the performance measures, polymer modified emulsion was shown to improve the rutting resistance of CR mixtures compared with conventional emulsion.
