Book Evaluating the Saturated and Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity of Soils

Download or read book Evaluating the Saturated and Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity of Soils written by K. Cartwright and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of calculating the saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivities of soils and similar porous materials based on the pore size distribution was shown to predict the experimentally measured values adequately. For coarse-textured soil materials or materials with a relatively narrow range of pore size, only one matching factor is required to calculate the hydraulic conductivity-water content relation accurately enough for many purposes; however, for fine-textured soil materials with a wide range of pore size distribution, two or more matching factors at a water content in the 0.3 to 0.4 bar range may be needed to obtain a useful evaluation for the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity.

Book Measurement of Hydraulic Conductivity of Partially Saturated Soils

Download or read book Measurement of Hydraulic Conductivity of Partially Saturated Soils written by DE. Daniel and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased interest in protection of the environment has led to a need to be able to predict long-term movement of moisture, and contaminants, in the vicinity of shallow land disposal sites for various toxic and radioactive wastes. The advantages of locating potential sites in arid regions has led to a need to develop means for predicting moisture movements in fairly dry, partially saturated soils and for measurements of the hydraulic conductivities of such soils.

Book Hydraulic Conductivity Assessment of Unsaturated Soils

Download or read book Hydraulic Conductivity Assessment of Unsaturated Soils written by DB. Stephens and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predicting the direction and rate of contaminant transport in the vadose zone requires quantification of soil hydraulic properties. For many problems, the most appropriate approach is to assume that the contamination is moving with the water phase. Therefore, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is the most important property governing water movement in soils. There is a wide variety of methods to determine this important property including in situ methods (e.g., instantaneous profile method, crust method), laboratory methods (e.g., one-step outflow, pressure plate, long column methods), and calculations from other data (e.g., Brooks and Corey, van Genuchten models). In this paper we present a summary and brief critique of the current methods for determining unsaturated hydraulic conductivity.

Book Groundwater and Soil Cleanup

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council

  • Release : 1999-11-21
  • ISBN : 0309065496
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Groundwater and Soil Cleanup written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-11-21 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, up-to-date review of technologies for cleaning up contaminants in groundwater and soil. It provides a special focus on three classes of contaminants that have proven very difficult to treat once released to the subsurface: metals, radionuclides, and dense nonaqueous-phase liquids such as chlorinated solvents. Groundwater and Soil Cleanup was commissioned by the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of its program to clean up contamination in the nuclear weapons production complex. In addition to a review of remediation technologies, the book describes new trends in regulation of contaminated sites and assesses DOE's program for developing new subsurface cleanup technologies.

Book Developments in Hydraulic Conductivity Research

Download or read book Developments in Hydraulic Conductivity Research written by Oagile Dikinya and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the state of the art of the investigation and the in-depth analysis of hydraulic conductivity from the theoretical to semi-empirical models perspective as well as policy development associated with management of land resources emanating from drainage-problem soils. A group of international experts contributed to the development of this book. It is envisaged that this thought provoking book will excite and appeal to academics, engineers, researchers and University students who seek to explore the breadth and in-depth knowledge about hydraulic conductivity. Investigation into hydraulic conductivity is important to the understanding of the movement of solutes and water in the terrestrial environment. Transport of these fluids has various implications on the ecology and quality of environment and subsequently sustenance of livelihoods of the increasing world population. In particular, water flow in the vadose zone is of fundamental importance to geoscientists, soil scientists, hydrogeologists and hydrologists and allied professionals.

Book Numerical estimation of hydraulic parameters in partially saturated soils

Download or read book Numerical estimation of hydraulic parameters in partially saturated soils written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow analysis in partially saturated soils requires the determination of soil hydraulic properties: its characteristic curve, q(y), and its permeability curve k(y). The instabilization of slopes, often associated with suction variations, and the transport of contaminants, wherethe source of contaminants is often above water leve, are some of the geotechnical problems involving flows in partially saturated media. The main objective of this work is the numerical implementation of a program, based on finite element coding, for the back analysis of flow parameters in partially saturated soils, based on field experiments, capable of providing information on the quality of the estimates obtained. The back analysis method used here allows the simultaneous determination of the characteristic and permeability curves from transient flow data. The program was used to determine flow parameters of a field experiment conducted in Experimental Field II (PUC-Rio). A simpler configuration test is proposed based on theanalysis of the results obtained in this field experiment and on a sensitivity analysis. This test may provide satisfactory results in the determination of hydraulic properties of partially saturated soils.
