Documentation of all existing in-situ geotechnical testing and sampling apparatus used for the offshore on an international scale, in industry, university and research facilities; 2. Evaluation of the above equipment for reliability and applicability, particularly to the Beaufort Sea, but also to continental shelves, slopes and abyssal depths; 3. Recommendations on what equipment would be most useful to the Beaufort Sea based on (in decreasing importance): a. quality of sampling/testing; b. ease of operation; c. transportability; d. availability/reproducibility; e. economics; 4. Evaluation of the need for the development of new technology and/or continued development of existing technology; and 5. Recommendations resulting from this study on future efforts of this nature. This report is a summary of the equipment documentation relating to Item 1 of the scope and objectives of this study. The techniques and equipment presented in this summary report are described in greater detail in the companion documentation report. The concluding section of this summary report presents an evaluation based on Items 2 and 3 of the scope and objectives of the techniques and equipment described briefly in this report. The intent of the evaluation is to assist the Geologic Survey of Canada and Beaufort Sea operators to select equipment for a more detailed assessment and to develop more extensive criteria for the equipment evaluation"--ASTIS database.

Download or read book Evaluation of Geotechnical In situ Testing and Sampling Equipment for the Offshore Environment written by Woodward-Clyde Consultants and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent years, exploration attention has been directed towards Arctic regions such as the Canadian Beaufort Sea, where permafrost (frozen soil) is encountered. Exploration and production facilities in these areas will be supported on gravity structures such as caisson-retained islands and cone shaped structures in order to resist the large lateral ice loads impinging upon such structures in Arctic regions. The design of such gravity structures relies upon accurate knowledge of the conditions and properties of both unfrozen and frozen soils underlying the structure location. Frozen soil conditions present unique geotechnical considerations in the design and construction of an offshore facility. Warm permafrost (temperatures between 0°C and -2°C), cold permafrost (temperature below -7°C), and solid natural gas (hydrates) are soil situations common to the Arctic regions. Sampling and in situ testing of these soils are important aspects of geotechnical site investigations for accurate definition of the subsurface soil behaviour .... A variety of sampling and in situ testing tools will be required to properly determine foundation conditions that can range from frozen to unfrozen clays, silts, and sands in the Beaufort Sea. ... In order to define a more site-specific situation, this report is an evaluation of in situ testing and sampling equipment to determine the geotechnical parameters necessary for design of a fictitious caisson-retained island with an underlying soil stratigraphy"--ASTIS database.

Book The Push in Pressuremeter

Download or read book The Push in Pressuremeter written by S. Fyffe and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of in-situ testing of soils has been recognised for some time. To extend the equipment available for in-situ testing in an offshore environment, the British Government financed the development of a wireline operated push-in pressuremeter and since 1980 the Stressprobe has been used extensively offshore. This paper updates the record of tests carried out with the Stressprobe equipment since 1982 and describes the software used for test evaluation. Examples of test data are given and alternative forms of analysis are compared.

Book In Situ Testing Methods in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book In Situ Testing Methods in Geotechnical Engineering written by Alan J. Lutenegger and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Situ Testing Methods in Geotechnical Engineering covers the field of applied geotechnical engineering related to the use of in situ testing of soils to determine soil properties and parameters for geotechnical design. It provides an overview of the practical aspects of the most routine and common test methods, as well as test methods that engineers may wish to include on specific projects. It is suited for a graduate-level course on field testing of soils and will also aid practicing engineers. Test procedures for determining in situ lateral stress, strength, and stiffness properties of soils are examined, as is the determination of stress history and rate of consolidation. Readers will be introduced to various approaches to geotechnical design of shallow and deep foundations using in situ tests. Importantly, the text discusses the potential advantages and disadvantages of using in situ tests.

Book Foundation Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Hsai-Yang Fang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.
