Download or read book The United Kingdom and EC Membership Evaluated written by Simon Bulmer and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1992 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain's membership fo the EC is rarely off the political agenda as a contentious issue, whether in domestic politics or within the EC itself. The controversy has become particularly acute within the last year, centred primarily on concerns over British sovereignty. The change of leadership may have led to a more conciliatory governmental approach, but has not silenced the voices of opposition to closer ties with Europe. Within this context, there is a need for an authoritative, balanced appraisal of the actual changes which have been brought about by Britain's membership of the European Community. Academic scholars in economics, law and political science compare the community's policies with the national goals of the British government and assess gains and losses in every area of policy.

Download or read book Future Financing of the European Union written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiations are underway to agree the details of the European Union budget for the period of 2007 to 2013 (known as the Financial Perspective), covering the newly enlarged EU of 25 member states. Further enlargement is likely, with Bulgaria and Romania due to join in 2007 and the possible accession of Croatia and Turkey being considered. The Committee's report considers a range of issues in relation to the current budget debate, including the merits of the Commission's proposals within the framework of recent and future EU enlargement; the Common Agricultural Policy; Structural and Cohesion Funds; the Lisbon Agenda; other spending categories; the functioning of the 'Own Resources' and a EU tax; UK abatement and the Commission's proposal for a Generalised Corrective Mechanism. Conclusions reached include support for the UK Government's insistence that the UK rebate is non-negotiable, given the inadequate reforms of the CAP; however, if real reform of the budget was offered, then the UK Government should be prepared to negotiate. Structural funds should be focused on the 10 new member states, as well as the two applicant countries of Romania and Bulgaria, with the phasing out of EU regional development funds for all 'old' member states with the exception of Greece and Portugal.

Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.tandfebooks.com/doi/view/10.4324/9781315401867, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 3.0 license. This book brings together academics, members of European institutions, and regional and national level policymakers in order to assess the performance and direction of EU Cohesion policy against the background of the most significant reforms to the policy in a generation. Responding to past criticisms of the effectiveness of the policy, the policy changes introduced in 2013 have aligned European Structural and Investment Funds with the Europe 2020 strategy and introduced measures to improve strategic coherence, performance and integrated development. EU Cohesion Policy: Reassessing performance and direction argues that policy can only be successfully developed and implemented if there is input from both academics and practitioners. The chapters in the book address four important issues: the effectiveness and impact of Cohesion policy at European, national and regional levels; the contribution of Cohesion policy to the Europe 2020 strategy of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth; the importance of quality of government and administrative capacity for the effective management of the Funds; and the inter-relationships between institutions, territory and place-based policies. The volume will be an invaluable resource to students, academics and policymakers across economics, regional studies, European studies and international relations.
