Book Operational Plan

Download or read book Operational Plan written by Greg Buck and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries, monitors annual escapements of salmon returning to the Nushagak River system near Dillingham, Alaska. Hydroacoustic techniques, dual frequency identification sonar (DIDSON), are used to develop escapement estimates of sockeye Oncorhynchus nerka, Chinook O. Tshawytscha, chum O. keta, coho O. kisutch, and pink O. gorbuscha salmon into the Nushagak River. Sonar passage estimates are used for inseason management of commercial fisheries in the Nushagak District. Estimates of species composition, age, sex, and length, are derived from samples obtained with drift gillnets. This report provides operational guidelines for the Nushagak River sonar project, estimation of salmon escapement, and sampling procedures, as well as general camp policies.

Book excerpt: This report presents the analysis of data relevant to the 1994 shortfall of late-run sockeye escapements. We provide an assessment of the problem in terms of the essential elements that led to the error in estimation. As well, we attach appendices which contain detailed analyses of the possible impact that various factors may have had on the estimation process.

Book Historical Estimates of Run and Escapement for Chinook Salmon Returning to the Nushagak River 1968 2020

Download or read book Historical Estimates of Run and Escapement for Chinook Salmon Returning to the Nushagak River 1968 2020 written by Jordan Head and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A maximum likelihood model was developed to estimate the 1968–2020 drainagewide run size and escapement of Nushagak River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). The model simultaneously combined information by direct observations of escapement at 8 locations (1 tower and 7 aerial surveys); harvest of fish from commercial, subsistence, and sport fisheries; inriver abundance indices from the Nushagak River sonar project; and inriver abundance estimates from acoustic tag and mark–recapture studies. Results showed that reconstructed total run size ranged from 74,000 to 629,000 Chinook salmon with an average run size of 282,000 fish, and escapement ranged from 49,000 to 476,000 fish with an average of 210,000 fish. The model estimated total run and escapement appeared to be reasonable and tracked well with previous estimates. The major deficiency of this model is the absence of overlapping, long-term escapement and run monitoring data.

Book Sonar Enumeration of Pacific Salmon Escapement Into the Nushagak River Bristol Bay Alaska 2010 2012

Download or read book Sonar Enumeration of Pacific Salmon Escapement Into the Nushagak River Bristol Bay Alaska 2010 2012 written by Gregory B. Buck and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydroacoustic techniques were used to develop escapement estimates of sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka), Chinook (O. tshawytscha), and chum (O. keta) salmon for the Nushagak River in Bristol Bay, Alaska during 2010?2012. Coho (O. kisutch) and pink salmon (O. gorbuscha) salmon escapements were estimated in 2012. A standard range dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) was used to estimate salmon escapement on the left (south) bank, and a long range DIDSON was used to estimate salmon escapement on the right (north) bank. Estimates of species composition, age, sex, and size composition were derived from samples obtained using drift gillnets at the sonar site. Final escapement estimates for sockeye salmon were 468,696 (2010), 428,191 (2011), and 432,438 (2012). Final escapement estimates for chum salmon were 273,914 (2010), 248,278 (2011), and 395,165 (2012). Final escapement estimates for Chinook salmon were 60,185 (2010), 108,278 (2011), and 174,085 (2012). Coho and pink salmon escapements were 329,946 and 1,214,960 in 2012. The major age class estimated for sockeye salmon was age 1.3, which ranged from 65% to 93% of the escapement in 2010-2012. The major age class for Chinook salmon was age 1.3, which ranged from 40% to 53% of the escapement in 2010-2012. The major age class for chum salmon was age 0.3, which ranged from 54% to 65% of the escapement in 2010-2012.

Book A Review of Survey Life Estimates as They Apply to the Area under the curve Method for Estimating the Spawning Escapement of Pacific Salmon

Download or read book A Review of Survey Life Estimates as They Apply to the Area under the curve Method for Estimating the Spawning Escapement of Pacific Salmon written by C. J. Perrin and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escapement estimates provide a basis for setting exploitation rates and for assessing the effect of exploitation or habitat manipulation on stocks, as well as for comparing and contrasting management policies using stock-recruitment relationships. Several methods are available to estimate escapement, but for any one spawning run they can field widely different results. This report reviews estimates of `survey life' (SL) (the number of days that mature salmon are alive in a survey area) for Pacific salmon. SL is an important parameter in the area-under-the-curve (AUC) method often used to estimate the spawning escapement of Pacific salmon. The report assembles data from many sources to determine if variation in SL measurements collected for the 5 species of Pacific salmon found in B.C. can be explained by biological and environmental variables. The study determined if extrapolation of SL estimates among streams and years is valid when the AUC method is used to estimate escapement.
