Book Evaluation of Different Zinc Rich Primer Coatings for Enhancing the Corrosion Resistance of Pipeline Steel to Internal Corrosion

Download or read book Evaluation of Different Zinc Rich Primer Coatings for Enhancing the Corrosion Resistance of Pipeline Steel to Internal Corrosion written by Jingyang He and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the properties of different coating systems to protect against corrosion for the steel substrate under environments of oil and gas. The coating systems were divided in two main parts according to compositions: the organic zinc and the inorganic zinc system. For each system, steel panels coated with only primers and samples coated with primers, intermediate coats and topcoats were tested. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit potential (OCP) tests were used to investigate the performance of the coatings. On one side of each panel, a pinhole defect was introduced, and the tests were performed for 3 months. The two multilayer systems were then compared with TESLAN 1101 ZN-CNT low VOC epoxy primer along with topcoat. On the other side of the panels, the tests were run for 4 months to examine their performance with no defect. The solution used contained 2000 ppm of chloride concentration with a pH value of 3.5, and was refreshed weekly. For panels coated with primers only, the results showed that they all formed corrosion products, which protected the steel substrate as barriers. For panels coated with the multilayer systems and no defect, the electrolyte slowly penetrated into the coatings, but the coatings were still providing good protection against corrosion. The multilayer systems all performed better than primers only in terms of protecting steel, indicating the significance of topcoat. With pinholes, primers show very similar properties, while multilayer coating systems show that the existence of pinholes helped activate zinc as sacrificial metal. When comparing the multilayer systems with pinholes, the results show that the existence of carbo nanotube did not significantly improve the performance of coating. Among all the coating systems, inorganic zinc rich multilayer systems had the best protection against corrosion.

Book Performance Characteristics of Zinc rich Coatings Applied to Carbon Steel

Download or read book Performance Characteristics of Zinc rich Coatings Applied to Carbon Steel written by William J. Paton and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program was conducted to evaluate the performance of topcoated and untopcoated zinc-rich coatings. Sacrificial coatings of this type are required for protecting carbon steel structures from the aggressive KSC sea coast environment. A total of 59 commercially available zinc-rich coatings and 47 topcoated materials were exposed for an 18-month period. Test panels were placed in special racks placed approximately 30.5 m (100 feet) above the high tide line at the KSC Corrosion Test Site. Laboratory tests to determine the temperature resistance, abrasion resistance, and adhesion of the untopcoated zinc-rich coatings were also performed. It has been concluded that: (1) The inorganic types of zinc-rich coatings are far superior to the organic types in the KSC environment. (2) Organic zinc-rich coatings applied at 0.1 - 0.15 mm (4-6 mils) film thickness provide better corrosion protection than when applied at the manufacturers' recommended nominal film thickness of .08 mm (3 mils). (3) Topcoats are not necessary, or even desirable, when used in conjunction with zinc-rich coatings in the KSC environment. (4) Some types of inorganic zinc-rich coatings require an extended outdoor weathering period in order to obtain adequate mechanical properties. and (5) A properly formulated inorganic zinc-rich coating is not affected by a 24-hour thermal exposure to 400 C (752 F).

Book Effect of zinc on prestressing steel

Download or read book Effect of zinc on prestressing steel written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns have been raised regarding the durability of galvanized prestressing steels in contact with cementitious grout, and regarding the use of galvanized ducts for grouted tendons or galvanized inserts or components in contact with prestressing steel inside concrete. These concerns are mainly based on the assumption that the hydrogen formed on the zinc surface when exposed to the fresh cementitious grout for a short period of time represents a risk of hydrogen induced stress corrosion for the prestressing steel. Basic research has demonstrated that hydrogen induced stress corrosion may indeed occur with prestressing steels which are sensitive to hydrogen induced stress corrosion. The use of galvanizing for high strength steels exposed to atmosphere is less controversial. However, under certain conditions hydrogen may develop also and potentially damage the high strength steel. This report provides a summary and evaluation of the relevant parameters on the corrosion behaviour of high strength wires, strands and bars when in contact with zinc with and without the presence of fresh cementitious grout or concrete. Both, tendons made of prestressing steels used in structural concrete and cables under atmospheric conditions are considered. The main groups of applications discussed in the report are: A Zinc-coated high strength steel for applications in atmospheric corrosion conditions B Zinc-coated prestressing steel embedded in fresh cementitious grout or concrete C Bare prestressing steel (no zinc coating) embedded in fresh cementitious grout or concrete in direct contact with, or indirect contact in the immediate vicinity of galvanized components embedded in the grout or concrete (e.g. galvanized ducts, galvanized reinforcing steel, galvanized fastenings / dowels, etc).
