Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, thin whitetopping has evolved as a viable rehabilitation technique for deteriorated asphalt cement concrete (ACC) pavements. Numerous projects have been constructed and tested; these projects allow researchers to identify the important elements contributing to the projects' successes. These elements include surface preparation, overlay thickness, synthetic fiber reinforcement usage, joint spacing, and joint sealing. Although the main factors affecting thin whitetopping performance have been identified by previous research, questions still existed as to the optimum design incorporating these variables. The objective of this research is to investigate the interaction between these variables over time. Laboratory testing and field-testing were planned in order to accomplish the research objective. Laboratory testing involved shear testing of the bond between the portland cement concrete (PCC) overlay and the ACC surface. Field-testing involved falling weight deflectometer deflection responses, measurement of joint faulting and joint opening, and visual distress surveys on the 9.6-mile project. The project was located on Iowa Highway 13 extending north from the city of Manchester, Iowa, to Iowa Highway 3 in Delaware County. Variables investigated included ACC surface preparation, PCC thickness, synthetic fiber reinforcement usage, and joint spacing. This report documents the planning, equipment selection, construction, field changes, and construction concerns of the project built in 2002. The data from this research could be combined with historical data to develop a design specification for the construction of thin, unbonded overlays.

The study mainly focused on the impact of milling on the design of HMA overlays over existing flexible pavements and composite pavements. Volume I of the report deals with this main study focus area. During the course of the study, an additional focus area was added to the project to investigate the impact of completely milling off existing HMA layers in composite pavement systems on unbonded overlay design. Volume II of this report deals with impact of milling on unbonded overlays. Volume I describes the structural evaluation of individual flexible and composite pavement projects located at different sites throughout Ohio, as well as an analysis of the evaluation results to develop enhancements to the ODOT HMA overlay design procedure as needed. The report presents detailed descriptions of the projects evaluated, field testing procedures employed, procedures adopted for analyzing field testing data and other data collected, structural evaluation results, analysis of results, and recommendations for improvements of the current ODOT overlay design procedure. Volume II presents descriptions of the data collected, data analysis, observations, and recommendations for improvements of the current ODOT overlay design procedure.

This study looks at the design, construction, testing and monitoring of a concrete overlay on a residential road, the first of its kind in Ontario, Canada.

Book excerpt: The main objectives of Task 2 of the project were to determine the impact of various input variables on the predicted pavement performance for the selected rehabilitation design alternatives in the MEPDG/DARWin-ME, and to verify the pavement performance models for MDOT rehabilitation design practice. In general, for HMA over HMA, the overlay thickness and HMA volumetrics are the most significant inputs for the overlay layer while the existing thickness and pavement condition rating have a significant effect on pavement performance among the inputs related to the existing pavement. For composite pavements, overlay thickness and HMA air voids are significant inputs for the overlay layer. In addition, among the inputs related to the existing intact PCC pavement, the existing thickness and PCC layer modulus have a significant effect on pavement performance. For rubblized pavements, the HMA air voids and effective binder content are the most significant inputs for the overlay layer. Furthermore, for longitudinal cracking and IRI, existing PCC thickness is more important as compared to the existing PCC layer modulus. However, existing PCC layer modulus is more significant for alligator cracking and rutting. For unbonded overlays, all overlay related inputs significantly impact the cracking performance while the PCC elastic modulus is the most important among inputs related to existing layers. The interaction between overlay air voids and existing pavement thickness significantly impacts all performance measures among HMA rehabilitation options. The interaction between overlay thickness and existing PCC layer modulus is the most significant effect on unbonded overlay performance. It should be noted that all analyses were conducted using the inputs ranges reflecting Michigan practices. The verification of the performance prediction models based on the selected projects for different rehabilitation options show the need for local calibration.
