In addition, this synthesis describes current practice with regard to methods for assessing the effectiveness of membranes, criteria for use, installation practices, and factors that affect the performance of waterproofing systems in new construction and rehabilitation. Suggestions for future research are also included.

Book Performance Evaluation of Waterproofing Membrane Protective Systems for Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Waterproofing Membrane Protective Systems for Concrete Bridge Decks written by Khossrow Babaei and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study develops a methodology for field appraisal and evaluates the effectiveness of three selected waterproofing membrane installations presently in service in the State of Washington. Based on the information obtained, none of the test installations had completely sealed the passage of salt into the concrete decks. "Active" and "uncertain" corrosion potentials existed at the rehabilitated portions; however, a decrease in corrosion activity since the time of rehabilitation was noted. Concrete deterioration after rehabilitation has occurred mainly within the boundaries of the repair work and original conrete, and it is more evident in areas with a shallower rebar depth. It is recommended that future research include a greater number of bridge decks. In addition, service life performance data should be obtained through long-range monitoring of the installations.

Book Waterproof Membranes for Protection of Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Waterproof Membranes for Protection of Concrete Bridge Decks written by Cecil J. Van Til and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1976 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents and presents the results of a comprehensive assessment of the protective capabilities of all bridge deck waterproofing membranes known to be available when the project started (1970). An extensive program of laboratory testing supplemented by a limited program of field study led to the selection from an original group of 147 systems, five that appeared most promising for more intensive field evaluation. Materials and construction specifications were prepared for the five systems, in addition to an experimental plan for the field evaluation. The new work is being under taken as a second phase of the study.

Book Condition Assessment of Decommissioned Bridge Decks Treated with Waterproofing Membranes and Asphalt Overlays

Download or read book Condition Assessment of Decommissioned Bridge Decks Treated with Waterproofing Membranes and Asphalt Overlays written by Eric S. Sumsion and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to assess the condition of four decommissioned bridge decks treated with waterproofing membranes and asphalt overlays following the completion of their service lives. Large samples were cut from each of the bridge decks immediately prior to demolition and taken to the Brigham Young University Highway Materials Laboratory, where extensive sampling and testing was performed. Methods used to evaluate the condition of the bridge deck samples included visual inspection, hammer sounding, Schmidt rebound hammer testing, resistivity testing, half-cell potential testing, linear polarization testing, cover depth measurement, and chloride concentration measurement. The samples were removed from four concrete bridge decks along the Interstate 15 corridor in Provo, Utah. One bridge deck was constructed in 1937, two were constructed in 1964, and one was constructed in 1984. Each of the bridge decks was constructed using conventional cast-in-place methods. With the exception of the 1984 bridge deck, which had epoxy-coated rebar, all of the bridge decks were reinforced with black bar. A waterproofing membrane was installed on each of the bridge decks in 1984, meaning each waterproofing membrane had been in service for 26 or 27 years at the time of sampling. With the exception of one of the bridges, which was in good condition after 26 years of service, each of the bridge decks sampled had successfully served for at least 46 years. Aside from asphalt maintenance, no rehabilitation was needed on any of the bridge decks following installation of the waterproofing membranes. Without the application of the waterproofing membranes, the chloride concentrations in the bridge decks likely would have been much higher. Additional exposure to chloride ions from deicing salts would have quickly increased the chloride concentration in the concrete above critical levels, which would have led to significant corrosion and bridge deck deterioration, prematurely. While the application of membranes as a bridge deck maintenance procedure has mostly been replaced by the use of epoxy-based polymer overlays, many bridge decks protected with membrane systems are still in service today. The research findings suggest that application of waterproofing membranes and asphalt overlays in a timely manner, before the accumulation of excessive amounts of chlorides within a deck, can be an effective approach for concrete bridge deck preservation.

Book A Survey of Waterproofing Membrane Systems for Bridge Decks

Download or read book A Survey of Waterproofing Membrane Systems for Bridge Decks written by Wallace T. McKeel and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey was concerned with only a few of the many waterproof systems available for sealing concrete bridge decks, and made use of personal contacts with engineers of other highway agencies. The information gathered indicated that there were several systems that warranted testing in Virginia. Evaluations of the effectiveness of the membrane systems in use were recommended.

Book Protective Coatings for Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Protective Coatings for Concrete Bridge Decks written by Richard J. Irwin and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of protective coatings for bridge decks is evaluated. Applications to bridges on the New York State highway system from 1961 through 1967 included 1) surface overlays, 2) membranes between the structural slab and bituminous wearing course, and 3) surface sealants. Overlays and membranes consisted of epoxies, polyesters, polyurethanes, latexes, neoprenes, silicone rubbers, and asphalt cutbacks. Surface sealants included silicones, distillate oils, and linseed oil. None of the surface overlays lasted more than 2 to 3 yr. However, a flexible polyester resin with fiber glass has provided satisfactory service for 1-1/2 yr and will remain under observation. Leakage of box-girder bridges with a membrane was primarily due to shear-key construction (since modified), while the same materials applied to composite bridges were associated with leakage that could not be explained. A more comprehensive survey of membranes is planned. Silicone and distillate oil sealants on non-air-entrained concrete did not improve long-term durability. Air-entrained concrete, both with and without linseed oil treatment, showed no evidence of deterioration after 4 yr of exposure.

Book Vermont s Experience with Bridge Deck Protective Systems

Download or read book Vermont s Experience with Bridge Deck Protective Systems written by RI. Frascoia and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intrusion of moisture and deicing chemicals into reinforced concrete bridge decks results in premature deterioration of the concrete and corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Vermont's search for an effective waterproofing system which would seal bridge decks and thus prevent intrusion of the moisture and chlorides has resulted in the application and evaluation of 29 different membrane systems since 1971. A number of the protective membranes have been in service for sufficient time to draw conclusions on their effectiveness. The results of followup evaluations show that several systems have provided complete protection to the bridge decks while a number of other materials have prevented chloride intrusion except in areas where deicing chemicals are often trapped due to the ponding effect of curb lines and expansion dams. Such results suggest that the simple and inexpensive materials could be specified for sealing the major portion of a deck surface if a compatible and impervious membrane material is placed over poorly drained areas. Difficulties encountered with the application of sophisticated and expensive membrane systems have resulted in a theory that the search for the most effective waterproofing system should concentrate on uncomplicated and less costly materials which could be applied without difficulty.
