Book Training of Attention During the First Year After Acquired Brain Injury

Download or read book Training of Attention During the First Year After Acquired Brain Injury written by Aniko Bartfai and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background Attention deficits are common after an acquired brain injury (ABI). Attention can be trained with attention process training, APT, a golden standard for the chronic stage after ABI. However, most patients undergo rehabilitation within one-year post injury. Recommendations for early cognitive neurorehabilitation and specifically for attention training are inconclusive. Objectives Evaluate the efficacy of intensive attention training after ABI on attention and memory within 4-12 months post-injury in a randomized controlled trial (RCT).Method A group of patients (n=107) (78% stroke and 22% TBI) in interdisciplinary outpatient rehabilitation were randomized to either additional 20 hours of attention training with APT (n=56) or activity-based attention training (n=51). The following neuropsychological test were used Ruff 2&7(Ruff 2&7 Selective Attention Test), Digit Span , Letter-Number-Sequences and Block repetition (WAIS-IV), Rey auditory verbal learning task (RAVLT), the Color-word test (CWT) and the Trail Making Test (TMT) from Delis Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS), Patients ratings were; Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome BADS) and The Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ). Assessments were administrated pre and post intervention and at 6 months follow-up.ResultsThe results indicate that the largest gains for both groups over time were within the area of psychomotor speed (CWT, TMT and Ruff 2&7 speed but not accuracy), but there were no significant differences between the treatment groups. Behavioral self-ratings (CFQ and BADS) also improved over time, but no differences were observed between the two treatment groups.ConclusionsNo significant differences in treatment effect were observed. One must consider the possibility that also the level of attention treatment in the control group was high, and that APT as add-on rendered little or no extra effect on treatment results.

Book Memory and Attention Adaptation Training

Download or read book Memory and Attention Adaptation Training written by Robert Ferguson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) may affect nearly half of all cancer survivors and can persist for years after completing cancer treatment. Memory and Attention Adaptation Training (MAAT) is a cognitive-behavioral therapy offering evidence-based, nonpharmacological treatment of this common survivorship condition. Organized into a session-by-session Clinician Manual and related Survivor Workbook, MAAT is conducted in eight treatment visits and has been demonstrated effective when delivered through telehealth technology, so survivors can readily fit MAAT into their busy lives. The MAAT Clinician Manual provides a clearly written summary of the scientific literature on CRCI and detailed guidance for each visit, including an agenda outline, in-depth discussion, and accompanying fidelity checklist in the appendix. Designed to be used in conjunction with the Survivor Workbook, the Clinician Manual also includes the full text of the workbook in a separate appendix, giving clinicians convenient one-volume access to the complete material.

Book Evaluation of Attention Process Training III in Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury

Download or read book Evaluation of Attention Process Training III in Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury written by Caitlin Sears and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention deficits are common following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Studies of rehabilitation of attention have identified factors that comprise successful treatment programs. To date, there have been no experimental studies to determine the effects of the most recent version of Attention Process Training (APT-3). This study aimed to assess treatment outcomes of APT-3 across levels of disability in individuals with TBI. Pre-experimental single subject A-B-A design. The participant completed two 60-minute sessions weekly for 7 weeks. Treatment sessions included specific attention exercises, training metacognitive strategies, and identifying and discussing functional goals. Progress was made in each domain of intervention. Treatment results were corroborated by notable gains in comprehensive standardized measures of attention as well as participation-level questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. These findings provide support for a combined compensatory-restorative model of cognitive rehabilitation.

Book Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury

Download or read book Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) may affect 10 million people worldwide. It is considered the "signature wound" of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These injuries result from a bump or blow to the head, or from external forces that cause the brain to move within the head, such as whiplash or exposure to blasts. TBI can cause an array of physical and mental health concerns and is a growing problem, particularly among soldiers and veterans because of repeated exposure to violent environments. One form of treatment for TBI is cognitive rehabilitation therapy (CRT), a patient-specific, goal-oriented approach to help patients increase their ability to process and interpret information. The Department of Defense asked the IOM to conduct a study to determine the effectiveness of CRT for treatment of TBI.

For ease of reference, this information is divided into separate chapters by neurological condition, since the nature of cognitive impairment and mechanism of rehabilitation may differ across populations. Also included are discussions of the use of neuroimaging in cognitive rehabilitation trials, rigorous design of cognitive rehabilitation trials to have greater scientific impact (e.g., obtaining Class I evidence), and future directions for the field. As such, the book is designed to be useful to both clinicians and researchers involved in the rehabilitation of such conditions so that they can make informed decisions regarding evidence-based treatment to deploy in clinical settings or to further study in research endeavors.

Book The Efficacy of Cognitive Rehabilitation for Attention Deficits in Sustained Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke

Download or read book The Efficacy of Cognitive Rehabilitation for Attention Deficits in Sustained Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke written by Rebeccah Anne Bernard and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a comprehensive meta-analytic evaluation of published studies of attention training for persons that have suffered from traumatic brain injury (TBI) or stroke. The included studies met criteria of quality established by Cicerone et al. (2000, 2005) and Rohling et al. (2009). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the published evidence regarding the efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation training (CRT) for attention deficits. In addition, the moderators, etiology and type of attention trained were evaluated. Analysis revealed a significant effect size of. 45 for treatment groups while the control groups yielded a small effect size of. 22. These analyses provide evidence that the CRT intervention did significantly improve attention performance over and above that which would be expected by the simple passage of time.

Book The Neuropsychology of Attention

Download or read book The Neuropsychology of Attention written by Ronald A. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been 15 years since the original publication of Neuropsychology of Attention. At the time of its publication, attention was a construct that had long been of theoretical interest in the field of psychology and was receiving increased research by cognitive scientists. Yet, attention was typically viewed as a nuisance variable; a factor that needed to be accounted for when assessing brain function, but of limited importance in its own right. There is a need for a new edition of this book within Neuropsychology to present an updated and integrated review of what is know about attention, the disorders that affect it, and approaches to its clinical assessment and treatment. Such a book will provide perspectives for experimental neuropsychological study of attention and also provide clinicians with insights on how to approach this neuropsychological domain.
