Book The Development of Aid

Download or read book The Development of Aid written by Gerard Van Bilzen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aid to developing countries started well before World War II, but was undertaken as an ad hoc activity or was delivered by private organizations. This changed after the War. In his Inaugural Address in 1949, the American President, Harry Truman, announced a “bold new programme for making the benefits of our scientific advances and industrial progress available for the improvement and growth of underdeveloped nations” (the so-called “Point IV” Plan). At that time it was thought that this support would be needed only for a limited number of years, comparable to the Marshall Plan assistance to Europe. But reality proved to be different: providing aid was a very long-term affair. Since the Fifties, the aid provided has changed at different occasions. In the beginning, aid concentrated on constructing infrastructure, such as roads, railways, dams, and harbours, in order to promote industrial development. In the Sixties, aid to agriculture was added, and in the Seventies aid to social sectors (Basic Needs) was also provided. The Eighties brought worldwide debt problems. Major donors applied structural adjustment policies; some called this the lost decade (década perdida). The Nineties saw the arrival of the first environmental considerations, and asked for attention for the role of women and good governance. The form of aid changed from projects to programmes and budget support. Describing the different aid forms of the last 65 years and analysing why aid changed from time to time are the subjects of this book. Professionals and students in the area of international cooperation will benefit from studying this history, as, at this moment, old concepts are reappearing or applied by new donors like China. Is the pendulum really swinging back, as Louis Emmerij at one point suggested?

Book Investigating Local Knowledge

Download or read book Investigating Local Knowledge written by Paul Sillitoe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2004. Local knowledge reflects many generations of experience and problem solving by people around the world, increasingly affected by globalizing forces. Such knowledge is far more sophisticated than development professionals previously assumed and, as such, represents an immensely valuable resource. A growing number of governments and international development agencies are recognizing that local-level knowledge and organizations offer the foundation for new participatory models of development that are both cost-effective and sustainable, and ecologically and socially sound. This book provides a timely overview of new directions and new approaches to investigating the role of rural communities in generating knowledge founded on their sophisticated understandings of their environments, devising mechanisms to conserve and sustain their natural resources, and establishing community-based organizations that serve as forums for identifying problems and dealing with them through local-level experimentation, innovation, and exchange of information with other societies. These studies show that development activities that work with and through local knowledge and organizations have several important advantages over projects that operate outside them. Local knowledge informs grassroots decision-making, much of which takes place through indigenous organizations and associations at the community level as people seek to identify and determine solutions to their problems.

Book Non Governmental Organisations Performance and Accountability

Download or read book Non Governmental Organisations Performance and Accountability written by Michael Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen some significant changes in international development and in the status of non-governmental organisations operating in the field. Not only has the number of NGOs virtually doubled; many of them have seen a considerable growth in their budgets, and have grown closer to governments and official aid agencies. NGOs are acknowledged by many to be more effective agents of development than governments or commercial interests ? even as a ?magic bullet? for development problems. Despite these positive trends, the real impact of the NGO sector is not well documented. This is partly because NGO performance-assessment and accountability methods are weak, and partly because NGOs are caught up increasingly in the world of official aid, which pushes them towards certain forms of evaluation at the expense of others. This unique book takes a hard and critical look at these issues, and describes how NGOs can, and must, improve the way they measure and account for their performance if they are to be truly effective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workshop, held in Singapore on 7-9July 1986, which examined a number of case studies documenting the present level of evaluation of research management activities in different national programs and institutions. Participants used this case study material and their practical experience to reach consensus on some aspects relating to the different uses and users of evaluation, the role of evaluation in the planning process, and how to organize and implement an evaluation prgram in different types of research organizations, as well as reviewing the evaluation activities of external donor agencies. An alternative approach was suggested that would be more effective in the long run to both national programs and donor agencies. Areas of further collarboration were also identified.
