Book excerpt: The North Carolina Department of Transportation has used traditionally flexural strength tests for acceptance testing of Portland cement concrete pavements. This report summarizes a research project implemented to investigate the feasibility of using other strength tests and nondestructive tests, to accomplish the same objective of ensuring an adequate modulus of rupture of the slab but avoiding or reducing the need to perform a large number of flexural strength determinations for acceptance testing. The present work has been laid around using a nondestructive test (a resonant column) to measure a seismic modulus that is used as a rating tool to evaluate the repeatability of duplicate specimens before the specimens are strength tested. This has been accomplished by developing regression lines and confidence and prediction intervals for the correlation of the seismic modulus to flexural, splitting tension, and compressive strength test. All these test show strong correlation coefficients and, thus, all have the possibility to be used in the prediction of flexural strength. The report suggests a new process for acceptance testing based on using a combination of compressive strength and seismic modulus. The selection of compression testing is based on the perceived know-how of the personnel of NCDOT throughout the State.

As an outgrowth of activities begun in 1986 in Storm Lake, Iowa, a Technical Working Group (TWG) assembled under the auspices of the FHWA's Special Project 201. Since the first meeting in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1988, the TWG has cooperated to construct pilot projects, test concrete material with the FHWA's mobile laboratory, sponsor workshops and conferences nationwide, simulate exercises on urban project designs, complete ACPA's Technical Bulletin on Fastrack, and support follow-on research. This report formally completes activities carried out under SP-201. It presents key information on opening-to-traffic criteria and pavement slab temperature management. It includes a summary of key projects built around the country in the last 6 years. It also includes a copy of ACPA's new bulletin and closes with reprints of several technical reports that may be of interest to the reader.

Book excerpt: The researcher developed correlations among flexural, split tensile, and compressive strengths and ultrasonic pulse velocity from laboratory testing using materials and mix designs proposed for use in a paving project. These relationships were used to review the current Virginia Department of Transportation specifications and quality control procedures for concrete used in the construction of rigid pavements. Correlations between compressive and flexural strength for project-specific materials and mix designs permit the use of compressive strength cylinders rather than beams for compliance testing. The relationships also provide a means for evaluating the quality of the concrete as placed in the pavement.
