Book Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics

Download or read book Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics written by Mark R. Pitkin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword from a Clinical Biomechanist, Applied Physiologist and Prosthetist teaching graduate students in Prosthetics & Orthotics. While there are many books on Biomechanics, arguably the quintessential science of limb prosthetics, none addresses the fundamental principles in sufficient detail and depth to be practically useful to the prosthetist, rehabilitation specialist or researcher. Dr. Pitkin’s monograph is an exemplary collection of theoretical principles from his research and o- ers, presented in its clinical and applied biomechanics form. The textbook provides an excellent overview of the many facets of lower limb prosthetic design and engineering for the ardent clinician researcher and student. The book delves into many of the basic concepts that are required knowledge for the clinician and the scientist to have as the foundation for their work. Dr. Pitkin has an e- quent manner in which he reflects on the history and literature to tell the storied evolution of prosthetic design . He takes the reader on a journey to consider his theories, which have substantive foundations to contemplate. By the end of chapter one, we have the basic h- tory and an appreciation for the rationale behind the “rolling joint ankle” with evidence to support his theoretical views.

Book Comprehensive Structural Integrity

Download or read book Comprehensive Structural Integrity written by Ian Milne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 4647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.

Book Lower Limb Prosthetics and Orthotics

Download or read book Lower Limb Prosthetics and Orthotics written by Joan Edelstein and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-06-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower-Limb Prosthetics and Orthotics: Clinical Conceptsis a comprehensive overview of lower-limb prosthetics and orthotics, covering normal and pathological gait, lower-limb biomechanics, clinical applications, as well as prosthetic and orthotic designs and components. Joan Edelstein and Alex Moroz have writtenLower-Limb Prosthetics and Orthotics with the clinician’s perspective in mind. Clinical management is incorporated throughout the text, including basic surgical concepts, postoperative management, preprosthetic care, and training in the use of devices. Additionally, this text incorporates unique features relevant to physicians such as prescription writing and prosthetic and orthotic construction and modification, as well as, the latest research regarding energy consumption and long-term utilization of prostheses. Chapters Include: Orthotics in neuromuscular diseases Orthotics in pediatrics Functional expectations Gait and activities training Transtibial and transfemoral prostheses and components Transtibial and transfemoral biomechanics, evaluation, and gait analysis Disarticulations and Bilateral Amputations With over 150 line drawings and photographs to supplement the text, Lower-Limb Prosthetics and Orthotics: Clinical Concepts is ideal for clinicians in the fields of physical medicine and rehabilitation, orthopedics, vascular surgery, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Book Study of the Pressure Distribution at the Prosthesis stump Interface of a New Design of Socket

Download or read book Study of the Pressure Distribution at the Prosthesis stump Interface of a New Design of Socket written by Ali Mufawaq Nsaif Al-Saadi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important part of a trans-femoral prosthesis is the socket. It has to transfer the load generated during gait from the ground to the stump in a comfortable way. Several socket designs for trans-femoral amputees have appeared over the past half century, which have addressed many factors such as comfort, function and suspension. However, a totally satisfactory socket is still to be achieved. The present designs that are mostly used are the quadrilateral and ischial containment. Recently, a new transfemoral socket design has been proposed. It has been called the "High Fidelity" socket. According to the developers, this socket is claimed to provide a better connection with the femur, better suspension and comfort than current sockets. The aim of this research project was to assess the function of the high Fidelity trans-femoral socket relative to the ischial containment socket. This was done by measuring and comparing the pressure distribution at the stump/socket interface of the two socket designs, and recording the subjective views of the subject. Gait parameters (kinetic and kinematic) and the pressure distribution were measured simultaneously using the CAREN system (Computer Aided Rehabilitation Environment) technology and the Tekscan system in the gait analysis laboratory. A literature review of socket design and philosophies for trans-femoral amputation level prostheses was undertaken. It was found that the pressure distribution of the High Fidelity socket is more uniform than that of the ischial containment socket. The results captured were from one subject only because of the time limitation. The subject found that both sockets were comfortable. The acclimatization period for the High Fidelity socket was short.

Book Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies

Download or read book Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies written by Douglas G. Smith and published by American Academy of Orthpaedic Surgeons. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the major advances in the field since the last edition in 1992. New chapters cover amputee care in wartime, the role of the Krukenberg proceedure in developing countries, the rise of the amputee consumer movement, and the rapidly expanding role of sports and recreation for amputees, as well as the more controversial topics of osseointegration and transplantation. The major influence of orthopaedic surgeons in the development of both amputation surgery and prosthetics is noted in the greatly expanded chapter on the history of these fields. A chapter on absence of the lumbar spine and sacrum has been added, as well as a chapter on surgical revision.
