Book Evaluation of Tensile Tests for Adhesive Bonds

Download or read book Evaluation of Tensile Tests for Adhesive Bonds written by GP. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile adhesion tests have been used for many years as a quality control tool and to quantify the strength of a bond. The quantity generally reported as the tensile strength is the breaking force per unit bond area (average axial stress at the maximum load). The stress distribution in tensile adhesion tests, as discussed in this report, depends upon many factors such as material properties of the adherend and adhesive and the ratio of bond area to adhesive thickness. Test data are presented which demonstrate that the debond initiation point changes from the bond edge to the center of the bond area as the adhesive thickness is decreased. These test data confirm a prior prediction by the authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held in Newark, NJ, May 22-24, 2000. Since the first symposium, held in 1982, there had been tremendous research activity dealing with many aspects of adhesive joints. This volume contains a total of 21 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Therefore, this book is not merely a collection of unreviewed manuscripts, but rather represents information which has passed peer scrutiny. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh. The book is divided into three parts: 1) General Papers; 2) Evaluation, Analysis and Testing; and 3) Durability Aspects. The topics covered include: molecular brush concepts in enhancing strength of adhesive joints; factors affecting performance of adhesive joints; substrate preparation and modification; interfacial/interphasial aspects; determination of locus of failure; analysis and evaluation of adhesive joints using various techniques; testing of adhesive joints; stress analysis; application of fracture mechanics; durability aspects; accelerated environmental degradation of adhesive joints; solvent uptake; and adhesives with special characteristics. This volume represents a commentary on the current R&D activity in this arena and it should be of great value and interest to anyone interested in adhesive bonding / adhesive joints. Furthermore, this volume contains a number of excellent review/overview articles, which should be of particular value.

Book An Evaluation of Equipment and Procedures for Tensile Bond Testing of Concrete Repairs

Download or read book An Evaluation of Equipment and Procedures for Tensile Bond Testing of Concrete Repairs written by Alexander M. Vaysburd and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the durability of repaired concrete structures is a primary objective of any repair project, then every effort should be made to ensure adequate bonding between the repair and the existing concrete substrate. A total of 257 partial-depth cores in 77 experimental repairs were tested in Florida, Illinois, and Arizona in order to evaluate the effect of material properties and environmental conditions on the bond between repair and concrete substrate. Three pull-off testing devices were used to determine the bond strengths for each of the experimental repairs. In addition, the testing devices themselves were evaluated by analyzing the magnitude and relative precision of the pull-off strengths, modes of failure, and ease of use in an effort to identify a reliable and practical device for determining in situ tensile bond. The optimum depth of core drilling into the existing substrate was determined by comparing theoretical finite element analysis of failure zone stress distribution with measured test results.

Book Ice Adhesion

Download or read book Ice Adhesion written by K. L. Mittal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book presents ways to mitigate the disastrous effects of snow/ice accumulation and discusses the mechanisms of new coatings deicing technologies. The strategies currently used to combat ice accumulation problems involve chemical, mechanical or electrical approaches. These are expensive and labor intensive, and the use of chemicals raises serious environmental concerns. The availability of truly icephobic surfaces or coatings will be a big boon in preventing the devastating effects of ice accumulation. Currently, there is tremendous interest in harnessing nanotechnology in rendering surfaces icephobic or in devising icephobic surface materials and coatings, and all signals indicate that such interest will continue unabated in the future. As the key issue regarding icephobic materials or coatings is their durability, much effort is being spent in developing surface materials or coatings which can be effective over a long period. With the tremendous activity in this arena, there is strong hope that in the not too distant future, durable surface materials or coatings will come to fruition. This book contains 20 chapters by subject matter experts and is divided into three parts— Part 1: Fundamentals of Ice Formation and Characterization; Part 2: Ice Adhesion and Its Measurement; and Part 3: Methods to Mitigate Ice Adhesion. The topics covered include: factors influencing the formation, adhesion and friction of ice; ice nucleation on solid surfaces; physics of ice nucleation and growth on a surface; condensation frosting; defrosting properties of structured surfaces; relationship between surface free energy and ice adhesion to surfaces; metrology of ice adhesion; test methods for quantifying ice adhesion strength to surfaces; interlaboratory studies of ice adhesion strength; mechanisms of surface icing and deicing technologies; icephobicities of superhydrophobic surfaces; anti-icing using microstructured surfaces; icephobic surfaces: features and challenges; bio-inspired anti-icing surface materials; durability of anti-icing coatings; durability of icephobic coatings; bio-inspired icephobic coatings; protection from ice accretion on aircraft; and numerical modeling and its application to inflight icing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held under the auspices of the Division of Polymer Mater ials:Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City, MO, September 12-17, 1982. There is a myriad of applications (ranging from aerospace to surgery) where adhesives are used to join different materials, and concomitantly the understanding of the behavior of adhesive joints becomes very important. There are many factors which can influence the behavior of adhesive joints, e.g., substrate preparation, in terfacial aspects, joint design, mode of stress, external environ ment, etc., and in order to understand the joint behavior in a holistic manner, one must take due cognizance of all these germane factors. So this symposium was planned to address not only how to make acceptable bonds but their characterization, durability and testing were also accorded due consideration.

Book 2 4 Definition and Evaluation of Parameters Which Influence the Adhesion of Metals

Download or read book 2 4 Definition and Evaluation of Parameters Which Influence the Adhesion of Metals written by William P. Gilbreath and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adhesion of metals is a complicated function of bulk and surface properties. Experiments, performed to define and evaluate the properties which influence the adhesive behavior of contacting bodies, showed that the interaction of the metal with its environment, the nature of any resulting contaminants formed on its surface, and certain mechanical properties (e.g., tensile strength, penetration hardness, and ductility) related to the plastic and elastic properties of the material were most important. To assess the influence of these properties, the adhesion of initially clean surfaces, generated by fracturing metals in an ultra-high vacuum, was monitored as a function of carefully controlled test parameters -- material, gaseous environment, exposure time, load, contact time or load duration, temperature, and vibration.
