Book An Evaluation of a Computer Simulation Model of Plankton Dynamics in Monterey Bay

Download or read book An Evaluation of a Computer Simulation Model of Plankton Dynamics in Monterey Bay written by David Edward Henrickson and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer simulation model of the phosphate, phytoplankton and zooplankton dynamics in Monterey Bay was examined and modified. The model is driven by four forcing functions expressed as annual cycles of upwelling velocity, incident solar radiation, mixed layer depth, and mixed layer temperature. An alternate upwelling index was developed based on the local wind field. A revised radiation index is employed based on the generation of both advection fog and low stratus cloud cover common during upwelling on the California coast. Analysis of the model's response to sinking and advection of phytoplankton was examined. The importance of seasonal increases in predators was introduced as a controlling factor in the seasonal growth of zooplankton. The model is able to predict the seasonal trends of phosphate, phytoplankton, and zooplankton throughout the year. (Author).

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book A Computer Simulation Model of Seasonal Variations in Ocean Production for a Region of Upwelling

Download or read book A Computer Simulation Model of Seasonal Variations in Ocean Production for a Region of Upwelling written by Robert Thomas Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer model simulating the seasonal variations, of mixed layer nutrient concentrations, phytoplankton biomass carbon, and herbivorous zooplankton biomass carbon was developed. The simulation was generated using an annual cycle of four environmental parameters: (1) incident solar radiation, (2) upwelling velocity, (3) mixed layer depth, and (4) mixed layer temperature. Simulation results were compared with nutrient and zooplankton biomass data collected on a series of seven cruises made in central Monterey Bay from February through December, 1974. Both observed and simulation zooplankton stocks were characterized by two distinct maxima. The initial peak (1.05 gC/sq m) occurred in late July and was followed by a decline in populations through the month of August. During the fall and early winter, zooplankton biomass increased rapidly to an overall maximum of 1.85 gC/sq m. Individual environmental parameters were tested to ascertain their importance in controlling simulation results. Phytoplankton stocks were influenced principally by changes in incident radiation, whereas temperature variations produced the most significant fluctuations in zooplankton biomass.

Book Encyclopedia of Ecology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Ecology written by Brian D. Fath and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 2786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Ecology, Second Edition, Four Volume Set continues the acclaimed work of the previous edition published in 2008. It covers all scales of biological organization, from organisms, to populations, to communities and ecosystems. Laboratory, field, simulation modelling, and theoretical approaches are presented to show how living systems sustain structure and function in space and time. New areas of focus include micro- and macro scales, molecular and genetic ecology, and global ecology (e.g., climate change, earth transformations, ecosystem services, and the food-water-energy nexus) are included. In addition, new, international experts in ecology contribute on a variety of topics. Offers the most broad-ranging and comprehensive resource available in the field of ecology Provides foundational content and suggests further reading Incorporates the expertise of over 500 outstanding investigators in the field of ecology, including top young scientists with both research and teaching experience Includes multimedia resources, such as an Interactive Map Viewer and links to a CSDMS (Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System), an open-source platform for modelers to share and link models dealing with earth system processes
