Différents outils, qu'ils soient cliniques, biologiques ou comportementaux, ont ainsi été développés et peuvent être mis à la disposition des éleveurs s'ils souhaitent estimer l'état émotionnel de leurs chiens. Le point clé à respecter pour l'équilibre de cette espèce dans un élevage est son caractère social et son besoin de stimulations. Ainsi, l'aménagement de l'élevage avec de nombreux enrichissements et stimulations animés comme inanimés répond aux besoins d'interactions du chien avec son environnement et évite l'apparition de troubles du comportement. Il est désormais nécessaire d'essayer de concilier, au sein de l'élevage, la prévention des troubles du comportement avec la prévention des maladies.

Différents aspects de l'élevage sont modifiés comme la définition d'éleveur jusqu'aux conditions de cession d'un chien. Ce travail de thèse a pour objectif de guider un futur professionnel qui souhaite développer une activité d'élevage de chiens. Elle référence les textes de loi auxquels il peut se référer en matière de normes d'élevage, de bien-être animal, de cession et apporte aussi différents conseils nécessaire à la bonne gestion d'un élevage. Ainsi, des conseils en matière de gestion de la reproduction des chiens et de la gestion sanitaire sont développés. La place du vétérinaire est aussi abordée. En veillant à la bonne santé des animaux élevés et au respect des normes d'élevage, de bien être, il joue un rôle charnière dans l'élevage car il est à la fois du côté de l'éleveur pour l'aider dans sa pratique quotidienne afin d'améliorer les performances de son élevage et de l'acheteur pour le conseiller dans l'achat d'un chien.

Book excerpt: The INRA Feeding System for Ruminants has been renewed to better address emerging challenges for animal nutrition: prevision of productive responses, product quality, animal health and emissions to the environment, in a larger extent of breeding contexts. The new system is mainly built from meta-analyses of large data bases, and modelling. The dietary supply model accounts for digestive interactions and flows of individual nutrients, so that feed values depend on the final ration. Animal requirements account for variability in metabolic efficiency. Various productive and non-productive animal responses to diets are quantified. This book presents the whole system for dairy and meat, large and small ruminant production, including specificities for tropical and Mediterranean areas. The first two sections present biological concepts and equations (with their field of application and statistical accuracy) used to predict intake (including at grazing) and nutrient supply (Section 1), animal’s requirements and multiple responses to diets (Section 2). They apply to net energy, metabolisable protein and amino acids, water, minerals and vitamins. Section 3 presents the use of concepts and equations in rationing with two purposes: (1) diet calculation for a given performance objective; and (2) prediction of the multiple responses of animal to diet changes. Section 4 displays the tables of feed values, and their prevision. All the equations and concepts are embedded in the fifth version of INRAtion® software for practical use.

Book excerpt: Twenty years after the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) entered into force, the founding of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) in 2012 was the outcome of a long process of setting biodiversity issues at the top of the global environmental agenda. With contributions from more than a dozen well-renowned researchers in political science, law and sociology, this book analyzes IPBES functioning and challenges in terms of the knowledge selection process and actors involved. The book reveals that, through its conceptual framework, IPBES promotes a pluralistic view of nature that calls for a broadening of the disciplinary frontiers. It combines natural science and social science research and also includes indigenous and local knowledge. IPBES is considered to represent the institutionalization of a permanent knowledge assessment on biodiversity and is often referred to as an IPCC success story, constituting a new stage in global environmental governance. In analyzing the knowledge selection process for IPBES decision making, the book better situates IPBES within the biodiversity and global governance domain. It ultimately argues that the establishment of IPBES provides a new opportunity to coordinate the different international conventions (CBD, RAMSAR, CITES, etc.) and initiatives (international assessment of marine biology, scientific programs, funding, etc.).

I wanted to great deal write a book which straightened out some of the confusion by looking in detail at one particular problem: how to recognize animal suffering. The book is written for anyone interested in animals and the controversies over how human beings should treat them. I have tried to convince people who might otherwise feel that science had only a rather sinister connection with animal welfare that the scientific study of animal suffering has, in fact, a major and positive contribution to make. It can give us an insight into what animals experience and this, in tum, may help us to alleviate their suffering. At the same time, I have tried to write a book that will be of at least some use to scientists. The chapters which follow pro vide an outline of the biological approach to animal welfare. I have also attempted to show sceptics that it is possible to study animal suffering without sacrificing standards of scien tific procedure. Perhaps some may even come to share my belief that the study of the subjective experiences of animals is one of the most fascinating areas in the whole of biology, as well as being of great practical and ethical importance.
