Book Installation and Performance Evaluation of the Wabocrete FMV Joint System for Bridge Decks

Download or read book Installation and Performance Evaluation of the Wabocrete FMV Joint System for Bridge Decks written by Marvin Henry Hilton and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wabocrete FMV bridge deck expansion joint system was installed on the Alternate Rte. 58 bridge over the Clinch River in November 1986. The bridge was placed in service in mid-1987. The report concerns an installation and performance evaluation of the joint system. It was found that the Wabocrete FMV joint system offers some installation advantages over preformed joint systems. The blockout area of the bridge deck does not have to be as smooth or as precisely dimensioned since the joint's anchorage system can be leveled prior to placement of the bonding material. Installation and future maintenance problems involving anchor bolts are eliminated since the system relies on bond rather than mechanical anchorages. After over two years of service, the Vabocrete system has performed well. During this period, the joint has accommodated all thermal and structural movements, withstood traffic impacts and remained leak proof. The joint does tend to accumulate debris and should be routinely cleaned. The performance of the joint during the period of the study has not given any reason to suggest that it not be used on new bridge decks similar to the one studied. A longer term evaluation, however, would be necessary for a fullrecommendation. The use of the Wabocrete FMV, and similar systems, as retrofit on older bridges should be approached with caution. Furthermore, these systems shouldprobably not be used in retrofit situations in conjunction with adjacent asphaltic overlays.

Book Bridge Deck Expansion Devices

Download or read book Bridge Deck Expansion Devices written by Herbert N. Swanson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents a study to evaluate promising bridge deck expansion joints with the intent of finding the most maintenance free and water-proof expansion devices for use in Colorado. The evaluation included inspections and measurements during construction and post construction. The ability of a device to remain water tight is the most important quality used to determine the success of the device. Proper installation during construction is one of the most important factors which will ultimately determine the success of an expansion joint. Neoprene compression joint seals are recommended for future joints whenever possible. On flex joints have also been shown to perform well, however, further evaluations are required before firm recommendations are made.

Book Evaluation of Asphalt Bridge Deck Joint Systems

Download or read book Evaluation of Asphalt Bridge Deck Joint Systems written by Nader Ghafoori and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphaltic Plug Joint is an expansion joint that is used for new and rehabilitated bridges. It provides a smooth and watertight surface free of debris; and offers simple, easy and staged construction. Asphaltic plug joint can be repaired segmentally and it is cheaper than most other expansion joint types. The durability and performance of asphaltic plug joints depend greatly on the temperature variations. In high temperatures APJs are susceptible to rutting, heaving, and delamination. In low temperatures, asphaltic plug joint area may develop spalling, pot holes, debonding and exposure of metal plate. Recently, over 25% of NDOT District III bridges have experimented failure of their newly constructed asphaltic plug joints. This premature failure has been observed to be predominantly in bridges having high movement decks (over 2 inches). While designed for 5 to 8 years of service, those deck joints need significant maintenance within six months of service. In an attempt to address the problems encountered with the NDOT bridge deck asphaltic plug joints, this investigation intended to: (1) assess the condition and the extent of the problems associated with the asphaltic plug joints placed in the three NDOT districts; (2) compile available published and unpublished information, and to conduct a national survey to all departments of transportation; and (3) analyze the compiled relevant information and data, and to offer recommendations regarding quantifiable design parameters which can be used for proper construction of asphaltic plug joints. Properly selected materials, sound designs, viable construction methods, and maintenance strategies can lead to attaining improved bridge deck systems that can meet a set of performance criteria, as well as result in cost saving. The information presented in this report should assist NDOT in dealing with premature failure of asphaltic plug joints.

Book Rapid Replacement of Bridge Deck Expansion Joints Study Phase I

Download or read book Rapid Replacement of Bridge Deck Expansion Joints Study Phase I written by Adam M. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge deck expansion joints are used to allow for movement of the bridge deck due to thermal expansion, dynamics loading, and other factors. More recently, expansion joints have also been utilized to prevent the passage of winter de-icing chemicals and other corrosives applied to bridge decks from penetrating and damaging substructure components of the bridge. Expansion joints are often one of the first components of a bridge deck to fail and repairing or replacing expansion joints are essential to extending the life of any bridge. In the Phase I study, the research team focused on the current means and methods of repairing and replacing bridge deck expansion joints. Research team members visited with Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Bridge Crew Leaders to document methods of maintaining and repairing bridge deck expansion joints. Active joint replacement projects around Iowa were observed to document the means of replacing expansion joints that were beyond repair, as well as, to identify bottlenecks in the construction process that could be modified to decrease the length of expansion joint replacement projects. After maintenance and replacement strategies had been identified, a workshop was held at the Iowa State Institute for Transportation to develop ideas to better maintain and replace expansion joints. Maintenance strategies were included in the discussion as a way to extend the useful life of a joint, thus decreasing the number of joints replaced in a year and reducing the traffic disruptions.
