The purpose of the new series is to communicate the interdisciplinary philosophy and science of biometeorology to as wide an audience as possible, introduce scientists and policy makers to the societal relevance of and recent developments in its s- fields and demonstrate how a biometeorological approach can provide insights to the understanding and possible solution of cross-cutting environmental issues. One such cross-cutting environmental issue is climate change. While the literature on the science of climate change, climate change mitigation and the impacts of climate change is voluminous, that on adaptation to climate change is meagre in comparison. The purpose of this book is to partly redress this imbalance by providing insights from a biometeorological perspective. The book acknowledges that society has a long history of adapting to the impacts associated with climatic variability and change but makes the point that climate change poses a real threat to already strained coping systems. Therefore there is a need to realign human use systems with changing climate conditions.

These operations are at a high risk for climate impacts on profit. Careful evaluation of the economic impacts of drought and other climate effects were performed in order to better equip producers with the skills and knowledge needed to withstand extreme climate events. Using a specific study area in north central Texas, two computer simulation models, Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender (APEX) and Farm-level Economic Model (FEM), were used to determine the impacts of climate variability on forage production and farm profits. For this study, two models were ran with a historical baseline along with eleven different climate scenarios, including three main future climate scenarios: RCP 26, RCP 45, and RCP 85, which represent increasing levels of average ambient temperatures. After evaluating model results it is shown that profit risk for small beef grazing operations will increase significantly from current levels if weather conditions follow the patterns projected under RCP 85. Under the most pessimistic scenario for temperature increases - RCP85 - farm profits are projected to increase, but at the expense of a tripling of profit risk. RCP 26 and RCP 45 show that small beef grazing operations profits will double in profit risk compared to the historical baseline.

Cattle, beef and dairy can be affected by heat stress, particularly in feedlot situations or when grazing fescue-infected pastures. Climate change affects both male and female reproductive performance of cattle by altering their physiological process. In contrast of this, cattle are the most contributors for climate change causes than other farm animal. To minimize climate change impacts on animal(cattle), the climate adaptation and mitigation measures such as diversification of animals (within species), using different crop varieties, and shifting to mixed crop-livestock systems, improving productive and reproductive indexes (reducing age on slaughter, age at first calving and calving interval), increasing the longevity of reproductive cows; improving the genetic merit, improving quality and type of feed and provide ventilation, water, and shading seem to be the most promising adaptation and mitigation measures.

Despite significant investments, floods, droughts, and cyclones during the last two decades continue to cause extensive economic damage and impair livelihoods. Climate change will pose additional risks to ongoing efforts to reduce poverty. This book examines the implications of climate change on food security in Bangladesh and identifies adaptation measures in the agriculture sector using a comprehensive integrated framework. First, the most recent science available is used to characterize current climate and hydrology and its potential changes. Second, country-specific survey and biophysical data is used to derive more realistic and accurate agricultural impact functions and simulations. A range of climate risks (i.e. warmer temperatures, higher carbon dioxide concentrations, changing characteristics of floods, droughts and potential sea level rise) is considered to gain a more complete picture of potential agriculture impacts. Third, while estimating changes in production is important, economic responses may to some degree buffer against the physical losses predicted, and an assessment is made of these. Food security is dependent not only on production, but also future food requirements, income levels and commodity prices. Finally, adaptation possibilities are identified for the sector. This book is the first to combine these multiple disciplines and analytical procedures to comprehensively address these impacts. The framework will serve as a useful guide to design policy intervention strategies and investments in adaptation measures.

Book excerpt: In the United States, climate change is likely to increase average daily temperatures and the frequency of heat waves, which can reduce meat and milk production in animals. Methods that livestock producers use to mitigate thermal stress-including modifications to animal management or housing-tend to increase production costs and capital expenditures. Dairy cows are particularly sensitive to heat stress, and the dairy sector has been estimated to bear over half of the costs of current heat stress to the livestock industry. In this report, we use operation-level economic data coupled with finely scaled climate data to estimate how the local thermal environment affects U.S. dairies' effectiveness at producing outputs with a given level of inputs. We use this information to estimate the potential decline in milk production in 2030 resulting from climate change induced heat stress. For four climate model scenarios, the results indicate modest heat stress-related production declines over the next 20 years, with the largest declines occurring in the South.

Book excerpt: Projections of long-term climate patterns suggest a steadily warming trend over the past 100 years, with variable impacts on precipitation and other weather indicators. It is well known that high ambient heat has deleterious effects on cattle wellbeing and milk production in conventional dairy facilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impacts of heat stress from projected climate change to milk production on dairy operations in Texas. Using data from three prominent climate projections through the end of the 21st Century, a daily time series of temperature-humidity index (THI) values was developed for each climate projection and for two dairy production regions in Texas – Deaf Smith County in the Texas Panhandle and Erath County in north central Texas. Impacts on milk production were derived using previously published THI-impact functions. Results of the study indicate that dairies in north central Texas will face substantial heat stress impacts if any of the climate projections materialize, while the impacts on operations in the Texas Panhandle will likely be less severe. Under the most severe scenarios, dairies will need to plan for sustained THI values in excess of 90 particularly in the summer months. Based on the results, heat mitigation efforts may be required for dairy operations to remain viable.
