Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of video based instruction combined with immediate visual feedback on the performance of three different gross motor skills for children with Down Syndrome (DS). The participants in this study are two children with DS. They were selected for this study based upon these qualifying factors: enrolled in a moderate/severe special day class, enrolled in a title one school, have Down syndrome and displayed deficits in gross motor abilities based upon the administration of the Total Gross Motor Development-3 (TGMD-3) assessment. The research design is a multiple baseline design where three areas of concern are evaluated. These areas included skipping, overhand throw and underhand roll. The results of the study showed that in order for video modeling to be effective, multiple opportunities to view the video needed to present to participants. Video based modeling was combined with immediate visual feedback. The participants made minimal progress in the areas of overhand throw and underhand roll but the participants did not improve in the area of skipping. The participants' motor patterns and performance of skipping were identical to another indicating a correlation to DS. This research shows that video based instruction is often more effective when paired with other evidence based practices.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if parents of students could improve the motor performance of their moderately and severely mentally retarded children through the implementation of the Data-Based Gymnasium (DBG) Instructional Model as a supplement to the school program. The DBG Instructional Model is an individualized system designed to provide successful physical education experiences for moderately and severely handicapped students (Dunn, 1980). A total of 45 children, ages 3-9, with moderate and severe mental retardation from the states of Oregon and Washington took part in this study. Each child was randomly selected to participate in one of three groups based upon baseline data gathered for the three tasks: underhand roll, catch, overhand throw. During the eight-week treatment period, subjects in experimental group one received DBG instruction in school and at home, subjects in experimental group two received DBG instruction in school only, and subjects in the control group participated in the physical education program offered in their respective special education settings. The analysis of covariance was used to test the null hypothesis. The .05 level of significance was selected for use in this study. The null hypothesis that there was no significant difference between children who received DBG instruction in the home and school (E1) and those who received school DBG instruction only (E2) or no DBG instruction (C) was rejected on the basis of an obtained F value of 33.847. Application of the Student-Newman-Keul's Multiple Comparison's procedure across groups (E1, E2, and C) revealed that E1 and E2 were not statistically different (E1 = E2) and that E1 and E2 were statistically different from the control group (E1 # C, E2 # C). An examination of the raw and adjusted mean gain data for E1, E2, and C groups revealed a trend favoring the utilization of parents with the implementation of home instruction as a supplement to the school program.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Educators are in need of appropriate interventions for teaching individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A widely used (Bellini & Akullian, 2007; Delano, 2007) and evidence-based (Horner et al., 2005) instructional intervention for individuals with ASD is video modeling. Video modeling involves the learner viewing a video demonstration of a targeted behavior and subsequently performing what was viewed. A variation of video modeling is video prompting in which the learner views a video demonstration that is a single task analysis step or chunk of a targeted behavior followed by practice of that step/chunk. Video prompting has successfully been used to teach a number of behaviors to individuals with developmental disabilities including self-help skills (Norman, Collins, & Schuster, 2001), daily living skills (Cannella-Malone et al., 2006), and cooking related tasks (Graves, Collins, Schuster, & Kleinert, 2005; Sigafoos et al., 2005). When selecting appropriate gross motor activities to teach individuals with ASD, physical educators must consider their developmental delays and deficits in movement behaviors (Pan, Tsai, & Chu, 2009). Dance is a common activity offered in physical education programs (NASPE, 2005). By performing appropriate dances, individuals with ASD may be able to benefit both physically (e.g., enhanced coordination and balance) and socially (e.g., enhanced inclusive recreation and leisure activities). Dance has positively impacted children and adolescents with disabilities as evidenced by increased participation and cooperation (Crain, Eisenhart, & McLaughlin, 1984). However, additional research is needed to investigate instructional dance interventions for children and adolescents with ASD. The current study employed a multiple probe across participants design to evaluate the effects of video prompting as an intervention for dance instruction. Seven participants with high-functioning ASD participated in the study. Six males (ages 12 to 16) and one female (age 15) received Cupid Shuffle dance training in a one-on-one instructional format. The researcher showed one video vignette (clip) at a time on a MacBook Pro® laptop computer. After viewing a vignette, participants were given the opportunity to reproduce the modeled steps. The researcher provided positive reinforcement, such as praise and/or a high-five for correctly performed steps. To correct errors, a 4-level least-to-most prompting system was implemented. Maintenance, generalization, and social validity were assessed. Results showed that six participants acquired the Cupid Shuffle from the video prompting intervention. Moreover, three participants demonstrated 100% maintenance and one participant demonstrated 99.1% maintenance at 1-week post-intervention. One participant demonstrated 100% maintenance at 8-days post-intervention. Participants achieved overall generalization probes percentages of 44-68%. In terms of generalizing the newly learned dance to a new situation by dancing alongside the trainer to music, four participants achieved overall generalization percentages of 89-100%. When generalizing the newly learned dance to the new situation of dancing alongside peers to music, three participants achieved overall generalization percentages of 97-100%. Furthermore, parents and participants who completed social validity questions reported that the goals, procedures, and outcomes were acceptable and important.

Book excerpt: Special education teachers often have limited opportunities to learn from similarly trained professionals because of the low incidence of some students with moderate and severe disabilities and the amount of classrooms serving these students per school district. Moreover, the long-standing shortage of special education teachers in the nation further limits these opportunities. In order to learn new practices or augment and improve current practices, these teachers attend in-service trainings outside of the classroom and school context. However, research indicates that this form of professional development is at least inefficient due to the lack of feedback on new methods from an outside trainer in the applicable context. This study examined Video Self-Monitoring, a form of performance-based feedback that has been used for professional development. Video Self-Monitoring provides teachers a way to get observation-based feedback on complex instructional practices without the continual presence of an outside trainer. To evaluate the effectiveness of Video Self-Monitoring, the study examined three teacher's fidelity of implementation of advanced Direct Instruction reading techniques, specifically, the precise implementation of instructor signaling and error correction procedures. Using concurrent multiple baseline across subjects and interval coding, teacher fidelity of implementation of advanced Direct Instruction reading techniques, levels of incorrect teacher responsiveness to student errors per session, and levels of correct student responses per session were scored for a four-minute period during a reading lesson, over a period of 4 to 5 weeks, or approximately 15 sessions.

Unemployment of adults with intellectual disabilities is a complex multidimensional issue. Some barriers to employment of individuals with intellectual disabilities are the lack of job experience and skills training. In recent years, video-based interventions, such as video self-modeling (VSM) and video modeling, have been receiving substantial attention as viable methods to teach skills to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Initial empirical evaluations have demonstrated that VSM and video modeling, when used in combination with in-vivo instructional strategies, are effective methods to teach chained task to individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, few studies have investigated the effectiveness of VSM or video modeling as stand-alone interventions, without the addition of in-vivo instructional strategies, for teaching chained tasks. While research utilizing video-based interventions to teach independent daily living skills is gaining momentum, the use of video-based interventions in the area of job skills training is still lacking. This study investigated the effectiveness of VSM to teach chained job tasks to individuals with intellectual disabilities in employment settings. The purposes of this study were to (a) evaluate the effectiveness of VSM to teach chained job tasks to individuals with intellectual disabilities, (b) explore the effectiveness and feasibility of VSM alone or in combination with feedback and practice, and (c) evaluate the social validity of VSM in employment settings. Particularly in this study, the VSM intervention (i.e., VSM alone or in combination with feedback and practice) did not include an in-vivo instructional component in order to evaluate if the VSM intervention can lead to generalization of the job tasks to the actual job setting. Three adults with intellectual disabilities participated in this study. A within participant multiple probe design across targeted job tasks, replicated across the three participants, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of VSM in this study. All of the participants demonstrated increased task acquisition with the VSM intervention; however, the effectiveness of VSM alone, or in combination with feedback and practice, varied across participants and job tasks. In terms of social validity, the participants, their job coaches, and the supervisors of the supported employment program, reported overall positive perceptions of the videotaping procedure and VSM intervention. Limitations of the study and implications for future research are discussed.
