Book Handbook of Research on Advancing Critical Thinking in Higher Education

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Advancing Critical Thinking in Higher Education written by Wisdom, Sherrie and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of critical thinking has surged as academics in higher education realize that many students, upon entering college, lack the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed. While much has been written regarding the ‘lack’ of critical thinking, less has been written on the success of methods implemented to develop this fundamental skill. The Handbook of Research on Advancing Critical Thinking in Higher Education explores the effective methods and tools being used to integrate the development of critical thinking skills in both undergraduate and graduate studies. Due to the difficulties associated with teaching critical thinking skills to learners of any age, this publication is a crucial addition to the scholarly reference works available to pre-service and early career teachers, seasoned educational professionals, professors across disciplines, curriculum specialists, and educational administrators.

Book Predictors of Critical Thinking as a Component of an Outcomes Assessment in a Graduate Level School of Social Work

Download or read book Predictors of Critical Thinking as a Component of an Outcomes Assessment in a Graduate Level School of Social Work written by Tonya Michelle Tucker and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilized the standardized California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) Form 2000 to measure students' pretest and post test critical thinking abilities prior to and upon completion of a critical thinking infused curriculum. In addition, the researcher also tested a predictor model for students' entry level critical thinking skills, as well as two separate predictor models for students' acquired critical thinking skills. The researcher not only tested each of the models using the total scores, but also for the subscales of analytic, inference, evaluation, deductive and inductive. A paired samples t test indicated there were no significant differences between pretest and posttest scores except for the inference subscale in which an increase was noted. Additional analysis indicated students with low pretest scores significantly improved on posttest; whereas students with high pretest scores produced significantly lower posttests scores. Separate hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to test the predictor models, which allowed the researcher to enter variables into the analysis according to the guiding conceptual models. Specifically, for the pretest and one posttest model, the variables were entered based on the generic variables of undergraduate GPA, months between undergraduate and graduate degree and type of undergraduate school; and the and the discipline specific variables of pretest self-efficacy score, years of social work experience and undergraduate degree. The other posttest model was based on the student characteristics prior to entering the program of undergraduate GPA, months between undergraduate and entry into graduate school, years of social work experience, undergraduate major, type of undergraduate school and the student characteristics while in the program of type of program graduate GPA, mean hours worked per week, critical thinking subscale score. The demographic variables were consistently significant predictors across the pretest and posttest models, specifically White ethnicity. For the pretest models, undergraduate GPA was the strongest predictor across all models, except for inductive where it was still a significant predictor. The demographic variables of younger age and White ethnicity were the only significant predictors for the generic versus discipline specific models. The prior to and while in the program posttest model demonstrated similar findings; however, evaluation did include some additional variables as did inductive. These findings highlight the need for explicit critical thinking learning strategies targeted at not only improving social work students' ability to demonstrate higher order levels of thinking, but also to be culturally sensitive thus minimizing the influence of ethnicity on the development of critical thinking skills.

Book National Assessment of College Student Learning

Download or read book National Assessment of College Student Learning written by Elizabeth A. Jones and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1995 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study used an iterative Delphi survey process of about 600 faculty, employers, and policymakers to identify writing, speech and listening, and critical thinking skills that college graduates should achieve to become effective employees and citizens (National Education Goal 6). Participants reached a consensus about the importance in critical thinking of the ability to detect: indirect persuasion including the use of leading questions that are biased towards eliciting a preferred response, use of misleading language, use of slanted definitions or comparisons, and instances where irrelevant topics or considerations are brought into an argument to divert attention from the original issue. With regard to effective writing respondents thought that graduates should be able to use active or passive voice where appropriate, use correct grammar, use specific language conventions of their academic discipline, and use language that their audience understands. With regard to speech communication skills respondents reached agreement about the importance of information exchange, conversation management, group communication, and using and understanding spoken English and non-verbal signs. Extensive tables detail the Delphi survey results. (Contains 168 references.) (JB)

Book Differences in Critical Thinking Among Undergraduate Senior Students Based on Academic Program

Download or read book Differences in Critical Thinking Among Undergraduate Senior Students Based on Academic Program written by Lisa Kobs and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undergraduate college students select various academic programs for various reasons. Sometimes they will select specific academic programs that align with their career goals based on their perception of the rigor or ability to think critically in those programs. Whether different academic programs graduate students with differences in critical thinking is not well understood. The primary goal of this causal comparative study was to contribute to the available literature regarding whether differences in critical thinking do exist among undergraduate students in different academic programs. Critical thinking was evaluated using the California Critical Thinking Skills Test, a valid and reliable tool. It was administered anonymously to senior undergraduate students at a Midwestern university. No statistically significant differences were found between students in different colleges, selection or no selection of a pre-professional program, or major.
