Book excerpt: Professional management and sincere efforts towards upgrading Credit Risk Management (CRM) framework have gained reasonable pace in both the public and private sector banks alike. The present study, first of its kind, attempts to find the difference in the strength of overall CRM framework of private and public sector banks in India in quantitative terms and also identifies the specific CRM elements leading to such differences in their respective frameworks, if any. A mathematical evaluation tool, namely, CRM Index Score, comprising quantitative assessment of the current set of CRM practices relating to organization, policy and strategy, operations and systems at transaction level and operations and systems at portfolio level, the four basic elements of CRM framework, were deployed for making a comparative evaluation. The findings revealed that the strength of the overall CRM framework did not vary significantly between public and private sector banks as on the whole there existed very little difference in the scores of the public and private sector banks.

Book excerpt: Nothing is constant but risk in today's dynamic environment. Banking is the business of risks and all banks are exposed to a variety of risks viz. a viz. credit risk, liquidity risk, foreign exchange risk, market risk and interest rate risk. It is very important to handle these risks in a pre-emptive, proficient and cohesive manner to maintain sound financial health of a bank. The purpose of this empirical study is to make an assessment as to how far Indian banks have been successful in achieving their objectives of minimizing the negative effects that risks can put on the financial results and capital of a bank. The need of the hour is an efficient risk management system comprising risk identification, measurement and control. An effort has been made to assess the financial health of the commercial banks in India by analyzing their riskiness and the probability of being insolvent. The insolvency risk for 73 Indian banks (26 public sector banks, 20 private sector banks and 27 selected foreign banks) using Z-Index along with the probabilistic prediction of their book value bankruptcy over a period of nine years i.e. from 2005-06 to 2013-14 has been analyzed and a comparative analysis among public, private and foreign banks to examine the probability of their book value bankruptcy has been made.

This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk is detrimental to the financial health of the bank and could threaten its survival. To make the banking function sound and diversify the risk, it is necessary to deal with all kinds of risks related to banking. The future of banking will undoubtedly rest on risk management dynamics. Only those banks that have efficient risk management systems will survive in the market in the long run. The study attempts to analyze the risk management practices of Indian banks (Public and Private Sector) so as to infer the status of risk management in Indian banks. This will help in estimating the strength of Indian banks, their resilience to probable catastrophes, and their preparedness for uncertain events. Based upon the norms declared by the Bank of International Standards, viz., Basel norms, a questionnaire-based survey was performed to gauge the standing of Indian Banks. The primary data required for the proposed study has been gathered with the help of two questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The first questionnaire attempts to explore the perception of employees in the risk management department regarding the risk, risk management practices, and overall risk management philosophy of banks. A total number of 20 banks: 10 Public Sector, 6 Private Sector (New), and 4 Private Sector (Old) Banks have been selected for the study. So, the sample consisted of 100 respondents with 5 employees from each bank. All these respondents belong to the risk management department of the banks under study. The questionnaire is divided into a number of categories that correspond to aspects of the risk management process in Indian banks. The questionnaire includes the following sections: Risk severity, Risk Identification (RI), Risk Assessment & Analysis (RAA), Risk Management Practices (RMP), Risk Monitoring (RM), Mitigation of Risk (MTR), Credit Risk Management (CR), Market Risk Management (MR) and Operational Risk Management (OR). The questionnaire is objective in nature and seeks responses on a seven-point Likert Scale on statements from each section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we provide an overview of the concerns surrounding the variations in the calculation of risk-weighted assets (RWAs) across banks and jurisdictions and how this might undermine the Basel III capital adequacy framework. We discuss the key drivers behind the differences in these calculations, drawing upon a sample of systemically important banks from Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. We then discuss a range of policy options that could be explored to fix the actual and perceived problems with RWAs, and improve the use of risk-sensitive capital ratios.

Book Ownership Effects on Credit Risk Management Strategic Decisions

Download or read book Ownership Effects on Credit Risk Management Strategic Decisions written by Anju Arora and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study attempts to investigate the impact of bank ownership on Credit Risk Management (CRM) strategic decisions in Indian banking sector by using primary data regarding CRM strategic decisions of 24 public sector banks and 11 Indian private sector banks. The study observes that CRM strategic decisions are not significantly influenced by bank ownership, except with regard to the decision regarding the unit responsible for framing CRM policy. Apparent variations in strategic decisions are observed between public sector and private sector banks with regard to some issues. The study concludes that public sector banks prefer centralization of authority in strategic decision making. It also identifies the relatively weak areas that the sample banks should focus upon to strengthen their CRM framework. Thus, the findings of the study make important contribution to the ongoing debate on the impact of bank ownership on risk management practices.

Book Risk Management and Regulation

Download or read book Risk Management and Regulation written by Tobias Adrian and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of risk management has resulted from the interplay of financial crises, risk management practices, and regulatory actions. In the 1970s, research lay the intellectual foundations for the risk management practices that were systematically implemented in the 1980s as bond trading revolutionized Wall Street. Quants developed dynamic hedging, Value-at-Risk, and credit risk models based on the insights of financial economics. In parallel, the Basel I framework created a level playing field among banks across countries. Following the 1987 stock market crash, the near failure of Salomon Brothers, and the failure of Drexel Burnham Lambert, in 1996 the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision published the Market Risk Amendment to the Basel I Capital Accord; the amendment went into effect in 1998. It led to a migration of bank risk management practices toward market risk regulations. The framework was further developed in the Basel II Accord, which, however, from the very beginning, was labeled as being procyclical due to the reliance of capital requirements on contemporaneous volatility estimates. Indeed, the failure to measure and manage risk adequately can be viewed as a key contributor to the 2008 global financial crisis. Subsequent innovations in risk management practices have been dominated by regulatory innovations, including capital and liquidity stress testing, macroprudential surcharges, resolution regimes, and countercyclical capital requirements.

Book Bank Leverage and Monetary Policy s Risk Taking Channel

Download or read book Bank Leverage and Monetary Policy s Risk Taking Channel written by Mr.Giovanni Dell'Ariccia and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present evidence of a risk-taking channel of monetary policy for the U.S. banking system. We use confidential data on the internal ratings of U.S. banks on loans to businesses over the period 1997 to 2011 from the Federal Reserve’s survey of terms of business lending. We find that ex-ante risk taking by banks (as measured by the risk rating of the bank’s loan portfolio) is negatively associated with increases in short-term policy interest rates. This relationship is less pronounced for banks with relatively low capital or during periods when banks’ capital erodes, such as episodes of financial and economic distress. These results contribute to the ongoing debate on the role of monetary policy in financial stability and suggest that monetary policy has a bearing on the riskiness of banks and financial stability more generally.

Book excerpt: This report evaluates the Observance of the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision in India. It highlights that the supervision and regulation by the Reserve Bank of India remain strong and have improved in recent years. A key achievement is implementation of a risk-based supervisory approach that uses a complex supervisory assessment framework to guide the intensity of supervisory actions and the allocation of supervisory resources. Also, most of the Basel III framework has been implemented and cooperation arrangements, both domestically and cross-border, are now firmly in place. The system-wide asset quality review and the strengthening of prudential regulations in 2015 testify to the authorities’ commitment to transparency and a more accurate recognition of banking risks.

This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the findings of the Financial System Stability Assessment for India. Since the 2011 Financial Sector Assessment Program, India has recorded strong growth in both economic activity and financial assets, supported by important structural reforms and terms of trade gains. Increased diversification, commercial orientation, and technology-driven inclusion have supported growth in the financial industry, backed by improved legal, regulatory, and supervisory frameworks. Yet, the financial sector is facing considerable challenges, and economic growth has recently slowed down. High nonperforming assets (NPAs) and slow deleveraging and repair of corporate balance sheets are testing the resilience of the banking system, and holding back investment and growth. The authorities have been pursuing policies to accelerate the process of NPA resolution.
