Book Evaluating the Ceramic Extrusion Process

Download or read book Evaluating the Ceramic Extrusion Process written by Preston Garick and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extrusion bodies are typically generated through a trial-and-error process in which the liquid content is adjusted until an acceptable extrusion body is obtained. It has been recently proposed that by using specific volume diagrams, an extrusion "window" can be defined that can be used to eliminate the need for trial-and-error processing. To test this hypothesis. A-16 S.G. was used, after milling to eliminate agglomerates, as the best ceramic powder. To identify the packing efficiency of the body, the first step in obtaining the extrusion window, samples were slip cast to obtain the packing efficiency. The extrusion window was proposed to be 6 (±1)% excess water (on a volume basis). Batches were prepared at excess water contents ranging from 5% to 8% using a Brabender high-shear mixer. The extrusion pressure was measured using a piston extruder in an Instron testing frame. The results demonstrate an increase in pressure as the excess water content rises towards 6%, and then drops off as it reaches 7%-8%, demonstrating that the extrusion window matches the predicted window using the specific volume diagram approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Handle ̈ 1.1 What to Expect For some time now, I have been toying around with the idea of writing a book about “Ceramic Extrusion”, because to my amazement I have been unable to locate a single existing, comprehensive rundown on the subject – much in contrast to, say, plastic extrusion and despite the fact that there are some outstanding contributions to be found about certain, individual topics, such as those in textbooks by Reed [1], Krause [2], Bender/Handle ̈ [3] et al. By way of analogy to Woody Allen’s wonderfully ironic movie entitled “Eve- thing You Always Wanted to Know about Sex”, I originally intended to call this book “Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Ceramic Extrusion”, but - ter giving it some extra thought, I eventually decided on a somewhat soberer title. Nevertheless, my companion writers and I have done our best – considering our target group and their motives – not to revert to the kind of jargon that people use when they think the less understandable it sounds, the more scienti c it appears. This book addresses all those who are looking for a lot or a little general or selective information about ceramic extrusion and its sundry aspects. We realize that most of our readers will not be perusing this book just for fun or out of intellectual curiosity, but because they hope to get some use out of it for their own endeavours.

Book Fabrication and Evaluation of Ceramic Microtubes by Extrusion of Preceramic Polymers

Download or read book Fabrication and Evaluation of Ceramic Microtubes by Extrusion of Preceramic Polymers written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking University of Bologna as follows: This work will explore the fabrication of microtubes using commercially available, specialized equipment developed for micro-extrusion of conventional polymers. In this project, preceramic polymers, yielding Si-(O)-(N)-C upon pyrolysis at high temperature, will be used instead of conventional thermoplastic polymers. Microtubes of various diameters will be manufactured using both a single extrusion and a co-extrusion approach. In the latter method, a sacrificial material will be co-extruded with the preceramic polymer, and later eliminated to reveal the desired porosity. Multilumen microtubes will also be produced. The fabricated microtubes will be characterized in terms of mechanical properties and morphology, using several available analytical techniques.

Book How Different Polymeric Additives Affect the Extrusion Window in Advanced Ceramic Materials

Download or read book How Different Polymeric Additives Affect the Extrusion Window in Advanced Ceramic Materials written by Tara Linneman and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced ceramic materials, unlike clay-based traditional ceramic systems, have limited intrinsic plasticicity, thus requiring polymeric additives to facility forming processes based on extrusion. Recent results verified the extrusion "window" introduced through the use of specific volume diagrams. To evaluate the contribution of polymeric additives to improved extrusion, three commercially available polymers (emulsified PVA (white glue), CMC, and PEG) were introduced to alumina bodies while keeping the overall liquid level (water+polymer) constant and locate at the center of the extrusion window. Three polymer levels were evaluated for each polymer to assess the contribution of these polymers on the pressure necessary for extrusion and on the quality of the extrudates, determined by observation. The data demonstrates that there is an optimum level of polymer for ideal extrusion and that the extrusion window is unchanged by the substitution of the polymeric additives.

Book Freeform Extrusion of High Solids Loading Ceramic Slurries Part 1 Extrusion Process Modeling

Download or read book Freeform Extrusion of High Solids Loading Ceramic Slurries Part 1 Extrusion Process Modeling written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel, solid freeform fabrication method has been developed for the manufacture of ceramic-based components in an environmentally friendly fashion. The method is based on the extrusion of ceramic slurries using water as the binding media. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is currently being used as the part material and solids loading as high as 60 vol. % has been achieved. This paper describes a novel manufacturing machine that has been developed for the extrusion of high solids loading ceramic slurries. A critical component of the machine is the deposition system, which consists of a syringe, a plunger, a ram actuated by a motor that forces the plunger down to extrude material, and a load cell to measure the extrusion force. An empirical, dynamic model of the ceramic extrusion process, where the input is the commanded ram velocity and the output is the extrusion force, is developed. Several experiments are conducted and curve fitting techniques are utilized to construct the dynamic model. The results demonstrate that the ceramic extrusion process has a very slow dynamic response, as compared to other non-compressible fluids such as water. A substantial amount of variation exists in the ceramic extrusion process, most notably in the transient dynamics, and a constant ram velocity may either produce a relatively constant steady-state extrusion force or it may cause the extrusion force to steadily increase until the ram motor skips. The ceramic extrusion process is also subjected to significant disturbances such as air bubble release, which causes a dramatic decrease in the extrusion force, and nozzle clogging, which causes the extrusion force to slowly increase until the clog is released or the ram motor skips.
