Book Evaluating Shallow flow Rock Structures as Scour Countermeasures at Bridges

Download or read book Evaluating Shallow flow Rock Structures as Scour Countermeasures at Bridges written by Benjamen P. Dahle and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Utah Department of Transportation commissioned a study to determine whether or not shallow-flow rock structures could reliably be used at bridge abutments in place of riprap. Research was conducted in a two-phase effort beginning with numerical modeling and ending with field verification of model findings. As part of phase one, two finite element meshes were created in Surface-water Modeling Software (SMS) and analyzed with FESWMS-2DH. Second, field studies were conducted and a preliminary database was developed to track field studies conducted on 98 shallow-flow rock structures in Utah. Data organization in ArcGIS® and Microsoft Access® is presented followed by instructions on how to use the database. Both numerical model and field research results indicate that shallow-flow rock structures are not viable scour countermeasures at bridges.

Book Evaluating Scour at Bridges

Download or read book Evaluating Scour at Bridges written by U.s. Department of Transportation and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common cause of bridge failures is from floods scouring bed material from around bridge foundations. Scour is the engineering term for the erosion caused by water of the soil surrounding a bridge foundation (piers and abutments). The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines for the following: 1. Designing new and replacement bridges to resist scour, 2. Evaluating existing bridges for vulnerability to scour, 3. Inspecting bridges for scour, 4. Improving the state-of-practice of estimating scour at bridges. This document is the fifth edition of HEC-18. It presents the state of knowledge and practice for the design, evaluation and inspection of bridges for scour. There are two companion documents, HEC-20 entitled "Stream Stability at Highway Structures," and HEC-23 entitled "Bridge Scour and Stream Instability Countermeasures." These three documents contain updated material from previous editions and continued research by NCHRP, FHWA, State DOTs, and universities. This fifth edition of HEC-18 also contains revisions obtained from further scour-related developments and the use of the 2001 edition by the highway community. The major changes in the fifth edition of HEC-18 are: expanded discussion on the policy and regulatory basis for the FHWA Scour Program, including risk-based approaches for evaluations, developing Plans of Action (POAs) for scour critical bridges, and expanded discussion on countermeasure design philosophy (new vs. existing bridges). This fifth edition includes: a new section on contraction scour in cohesive materials, an updated abutment scour section, alternative abutment design approaches, alternative procedures for estimating pier scour, and new guidance on pier scour with debris loading. There is a new chapter on soils, rock and geotechnical considerations related to scour. Additional changes include: a new approach for pier scour in coarse material, new sections on pier scour in cohesive materials and pier scour in erodible rock, revised guidance for vertical contraction scour (pressure flow) conditions, guidance for predicting scour at bottomless culverts, deletion of the "General Scour" term, and revised discussion on scour at tidal bridges to reflect material now covered in HEC-25 (2nd Edition).

This document is a revision to HEC 18 dated April 1993 which, in turn, was an update of HEC 18 dated Feburary 1991 and of the publication, "Interim Procedures for Evaluating Scour at Bridges," issued in September 1988 as part of the FHWA Technical Advisory T 5140.20, "Scour at Bridges." T 5140.20 has since been superseded by T 5410.23, "Evaluating Scour at Bridges" dated October 28,1991. This document contains revisions obtained from further scour-related developments and use of the 1993 edition of HEC 18 by the highway community

Book Evaluating Scour at Bridges

Download or read book Evaluating Scour at Bridges written by E. V. Richardson and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document, Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 18 (HEC-18), contains the state-of-knowledge and practice for dealing with scour at highway bridges. The procedures for designing new, replacement and rehabilitated bridges to resist scour are presented. Procedures are presented for evaluating the scour vulnerability of existing bridges as well as inspecting bridges for scour. Book Assessment Prioritization and Communication of Risks of Failures of a Bridge Scour Countermeasure Over a Range of Flow Events

Download or read book Assessment Prioritization and Communication of Risks of Failures of a Bridge Scour Countermeasure Over a Range of Flow Events written by Fahmidah Ashraf and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment, prioritization, and communication of risks of failures of countermeasures over a wide range of flow events can be very effective in the selection and the design of an appropriate countermeasure considering the uncertainty in the performance of a countermeasure in an uncertain complex river system. In this study, a risk-based approach is developed for assessing, prioritizing, and communicating the risks of failure modes of a bridge scour countermeasure using Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) tool. In FMEA, the risks of failure modes are derived from the severity (S) and occurrence (O) ratings. Widely used approach of Risk Priority Number (RPN), product of the risk ratings, is improved to assess risks overcoming the mathematical limitations of Risk Priority Numbers (RPNs). Another simple and effective approach of assessing risks, Risk Priority Code (RPC), is used to make a comparison between the RPN and RPC results, and to find out which approach is comparatively more rigorous. The appropriate risk assessment approach is then used to build risk matrix. Risk matrix is a table that maps severity (S) and occurrence (O) ratings to the corresponding risk priority level. The developed risk matrix will be able to assess and prioritize the risks of failure modes of a countermeasure using only the qualitative information represented by S and O ratings. An approach of defining and incorporating confidence level in risk matrix is developed to provide more comprehensiveness and/or completeness to the risk matrix. Such an approach of developing risk matrix will enable bridge engineers to use risk matrix as a basis for making risk-informed decision. To determine the relative change in a risk priority level over a range of flow conditions, a study is then carried out focusing on the backwater in the vicinity of a bridge. The backwater is simulated using one dimensional model Hydrologic Engineering Centers River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). The effects of backwater are defined based on the monitoring survey data. Then, the developed risk matrix is used to determine any change in the risk priority level considering the backwater effects. Such an approach is simple enough to implement in the planning phase to account for the effects of flood events in the risk-based approach of selection and design of a countermeasure. Given the unavailability of quantitative information and the limited resources and time, the study results have important implications in the selection of an appropriate countermeasure and/or to pay special attention to certain components of a countermeasure which are at a higher risks in some situations.

Selected innovative countermeasure concepts and guidance derived from practice outside the United States are introduced. Management strategies and guidance for developing a Plan of Action for scour critical bridges are outlined, and guidance is provided for scour monitoring using portable and fixed instrumentation. The results of recently completed National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) projects are incorporated in the design guidance, including: countermeasures to protect bridge piers and abutments from scour; riprap design criteria, specifications, and quality control; and environmentally sensitive channel and bank protection measures. This additional material required expanding HEC-23 to two volumes. Volume 1 now contains a complete chapter on riprap design, specifications, and quality control as well as an expanded chapter on biotechnical countermeasures.
