Book Evaluating the Impact of Development Projects on Poverty

Download or read book Evaluating the Impact of Development Projects on Poverty written by Judy L. Baker and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the billions of dollars spent on development assistance each year, there is still very little known about the actual impact of projects on the poor. There is broad evidence on the benefits of economic growth, investments in human capital, and the provision of safety nets for the poor. But for a specific program or project in a given country, is the intervention producing the intended benefits and what was the overall impact on the population? Could the program or project be better designed to achieve the intended outcomes? Are resources being spent efficiently? These are the types of questions that can only be answered through an impact evaluation, an approach which measures the outcomes of a program intervention in isolation of other possible factors. This handbook seeks to provide project managers and policy analysts with the tools needed for evaluating project impact. It is aimed at readers with a general knowledge of statistics. For some of the more in-depth statistical methods discussed, the reader is referred to the technical literature on the topic. Chapter 1 presents an overview of concepts and methods. Chapter 2 discusses key steps and related issues to consider in implementation. Chapter 3 illustrates various analytical techniques through a case study. Chapter 4 includes a discussion of lessons learned from a rich set of 'good practice' evaluations of poverty projects which have been reviewed for this handbook.

Book excerpt: In today's fast-paced business environment, project managers face the daunting challenge of managing risk effectively amid uncertainty. Traditional project management methodologies often lag, leading to missed deadlines, cost overruns, and subpar outcomes. A comprehensive risk management framework is necessary for organizations to be protected from fate's whims, hindering their ability to achieve strategic objectives. The DMAIC Stochastic Method is a groundbreaking approach that combines Six Sigma principles with stochastic modeling to revolutionize project risk management. This innovative methodology provides a systematic way of identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, ensuring that projects stay on track and deliver the desired results. By integrating deterministic and stochastic models, the DMAIC Stochastic Method offers a more holistic view of risk, enabling managers to make informed decisions and proactively address potential issues.

Book Evaluating the Impact of Infrastructure Rehabilitation Projects on Household Welfare in Rural Georgia

Download or read book Evaluating the Impact of Infrastructure Rehabilitation Projects on Household Welfare in Rural Georgia written by Michael Lokshin and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lokshin and Yemtsov evaluate the effect of various community level infrastructure rehabilitation projects undertaken in rural Georgia on household well-being. Their analysis is based on combining household and community level survey data. The authors' empirical approach uses the panel structure of the data to control for time-invariant unobservables at the community level by applying propensity-score-matched double difference comparison. The results indicate that improvements in school and road infrastructure produce nontrivial welfare gains for the poor at the village and country levels. The impact of water rehabilitation projects is ambiguous. School rehabilitation projects produce the largest gains for the poor. The methodological lesson from this analysis is that ad hoc community surveys matched with ongoing nationally representative surveys can provide a feasible and low cost impact evaluation tool. This paper--a joint product of the Poverty Team, Development Research Group, and the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Sector Unit, Europe and Central Asia Region--was conducted as a part of analytical work for Georgia: Poverty Update.

Book Project and Policy Evaluation in Transport

Download or read book Project and Policy Evaluation in Transport written by Liana Giorgi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: There is a multitude of assessment methods available for analyzing and reporting on the impacts of policies, all with different underlying assumptions and a wide range of criteria. Since the 1950s, much research has gone into creating guidelines for policy analysis, yet only a small percentage of evaluation has been carried out on transport policy - and none by political scientists or social policy specialists. The editors of this volume recognize that European integration has seen a drive to bring policy evaluation on to the transport agenda and has increased demands for ’strategic assessments’. It has become apparent that to gain a fuller understanding of the success of a transport programme, a much more complex combination of analytical methods must be used, and a set of guidelines specifically for the field of transport must be developed. This book achieves this by bringing together a multidisciplinary team of analysts from throughout the EU to discuss in a much broader way the various types of assessment methods and how they can best be used to evaluate transport programmes and systems, both individually and in combination.

Book Evaluating Human Capital Projects

Download or read book Evaluating Human Capital Projects written by Jane Massy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we be sure that all those projects, programmes and activities that depend for their quality, efficiency and effectiveness on people’s performance have met their objectives? How can we improve the ways in which these projects, programmes and activities are planned so that realistic and useful measurement of their outcomes and value for money becomes possible? How can we produce from these evaluations data of the quality and a standard required to drive future improvement? Evaluating Human Capital Projects addresses these issues for professionals in the private, the public and the not-for-profit sectors. It shows them how to plan and track their investments with the professionalism and discipline widely applied to other capital investments. It is also written as a sourcebook for both professional and Masters-level students in business, health and a wide range of socio-economic disciplines. It addresses effective planning, stakeholder engagement, result-tracking, the identification and removal of barriers to good performance. It provides ideas, theoretical background, extensive references to practice and analysis from the authors’ extensive experience or planning, collection of data, analysis of data and attribution, and reporting to drive future improvement. It is intended to raise the bar on the professionalism with which human capital investments are planned and measured.
