Book excerpt: Local indicators of spatial association within exploratory spatial data analysis are used to study the spatial distribution of need and accessibility. Raster Analysis is performed to identify neighborhoods in Ames that have high need and high accessibility and high need and low accessibility. The future locations of the parks are then evaluated. The results from the analysis show that there are some neighborhoods in Ames, where the need for public parks is higher, but the accessibility to parks is low. These are the critical areas that public decision makers need to focus on. Similarly, there are neighborhoods with higher needs and having higher accessibility to parks. These are the areas where Ames Park and Recreation Department has provided adequate park facilities. The future locations of the parks in the South, and Southwest of Ames are effective as some neighborhoods in these parts of Ames have been identified as having high need for park but currently have low accessibility to parks.

Book excerpt: This research aids in tackling one important part of accessibility metrics-measuring land use. It introduces complementary strategies to effectively measure a variety of different destination types at a highly detailed scale of resolution using secondary data. The research describes ways to overcome common data hurdles and demonstrates how existing data in one metropolitan area in the U.S.-the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul -can be exploited to aid in measuring accessibility at an extremely fine unit of analysis (i.e., the parcel). Establishment-level data containing attribute information on location, sales, employees, and industry classification was purchased from Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. The research process involved cleaning and tailoring the parcel dataset for the 7-county metro area and integrating various GIS datasets with other secondary data sources. These data were merged with parcel-level land use data from the Metropolitan Council. The establishment-level data were then recoded into destination categories using the 2 to 6-digit classifications of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). The development of important components of this research is illustrated with a sample application. The report concludes by describing how such data could be used in calculating more robust measures of accessibility.

Book excerpt: The University of Arkansas was founded in 1871 on the top of a hill overlooking the Ozark Mountains, resulting in a campus that has steep slopes and numerous historical buildings that were not designed with ADA regulations in mind. This makes getting around campus especially difficult for students with limited mobility, and no campus maps exist that include handicapped accessibility features to help navigate the terrain and limited parking options. This study examines this issue using a holistic approach that explores cultural and technological factors to produce a map of the Historic Core District of campus. Geographical Information Systems enable studying the accessibility of the campus from an integrative perspective. My research includes overlaying digitized campus features onto a Digital Elevation Model to determine how slope, distance, and placement of features (buildings, stairways, curbs) determine accessibility. Such models can help plan optimal locations for handicapped parking, bus stops and accessible entrances. They can also be used by anyone seeking to find the best route across campus. The goal is an interactive on-line map available through the University website. This would facilitate navigation for all who desire to benefit from the opportunities available on this beautiful campus by highlighting the "best" routes and options for travel and parking. The problems surrounding navigation and accessibility on the U of A campus are not merely technical. If solutions are to be effective they will need to take into consideration the cultural factors in which these problems are embedded. These factors are multi-faceted, extending their reach through the community, student body and numerous University departments. The interplay between these players is complex with regard to the exchange of information, resource allocation and influence regarding decision making. Anthropology is especially suited for examining these cultural factors in order to improve understanding and communication between all parties with the ultimate goal of creating a campus that is truly inclusive and accessible for everyone.

Although development projects are carefully designed and meticulously evaluated for cost effectiveness and benefits, too many of them are not sufficiently targeted geographically. The growing availability and use of spatial data, organized in a computer system such as a geographical information system (GIS), makes it more feasible to analyze the impact of projects in specific locales and to achieve more effective targeting. 'Geographical Targeting for Poverty Alleviation' introduces the basic concepts of a GIS. It also demonstrates how to organize geographic and nongeographic data. In addition, it presents different methods for using the data of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey, together with other surveys and the population census, to provide estimates for the standard of living and the incidence of poverty incidence in different geographical areas of a country. Ultimately, these estimates should be used to establish guidelines for targeting poverty alleviation projects. This publication illustrates different GIS applications for identifying the project's target population, determining the project's spatial 'sphere of influence' or deciding where to locate public facilities. This publication is of interest to task managers, economists, development researchers, and geographers.

Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens.
