Book Performance Evaluation of Pavement Markings on Portland Cement Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Pavement Markings on Portland Cement Concrete Bridge Decks written by Amal A. Mohi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The performance of sixteen different pavement marking materials including waterborne traffic paint, thermoplastic, preformed thermoplastic, epoxy, polyurea, modified urethane, methyl methacrylate, and durable tapes, was evaluated on selected Portland cement concrete bridge decks, connected to mainline asphalt pavement, located in Ashland and Richland counties in ODOT District 3 along interstate I-71. Each material was installed in four locations along the three lanes of the interstate. Yellow was installed on the left edge line and white was installed on the two lane lines and the right edge line. All materials were installed in 150-mil grooves to ensure that all traces of the old thermoplastic have been completely removed eliminating its effect on the newly installed products. The groove depth selected was the same as the transverse tines depth on the bridge decks. The performance evaluation lasted for slightly over two years. The average daily traffic (ADT) was 42,000 for both directions. Two handheld LTL-X retroreflectomters were used for measuring retroreflectivity and one MiniScan XE Plus colorimeter was use for taking color readings. The evaluation included subjectively rating daytime color, nighttime visibility, and durability in accordance to Supplemental 1047 (dated April 18, 2008). The performance evaluation results obtained during the periodic evaluations were compared to preselected milestone performance criteria. The service life of each marking material was predicted using different mathematical models that estimated the time required for retroreflectivity to drop to a threshold value of 150 mcd/m2/lux for white markings and 100 mcd/m2/lux for yellow markings. The service life predictions were then used to calculate the life cycle costs of the marking materials in order to determine their cost effectiveness."--Abstract.

Book Permanent Concrete Pavement Markings

Download or read book Permanent Concrete Pavement Markings written by David Darwin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visibility, durability, and cost-effectiveness of surface pavement markings and previous experience with permanent concrete paving markings (PCPM) (markings with a service life similar to that of the pavement) are described. The use of durable materials, such as thermoplastics, polyesters, and epoxies, improves the service life of surface markings. However, these marking materials still exhibit problems of adhesion to pavement and rapid wear in high traffic areas. Snow removal procedures significantly reduce marking service life. Wet nighttime visibility is a continuing problem with surface markings. Previous attempts at developing PCPM have produced systems with very good durability, but poor nighttime visibility. The potential for developing cost-effective PCPM systems that can provide both long-term durability and adequate visibility throughout the service life and the requirements for such systems are discussed. Polymers, such as epoxies, can provide superior durability and adhesion to pavement. The application of larger than standard size glass beads can improve wet nighttime visibility. The cost of PCPM systems can be significantly reduced using effective methods of placing grooves in which the marking material is placed. Generally, there is a good probability that a cost-effective PCPM system with satisfactory durability and visibility can be developed. The PCPM systems with thicknesses of 9.5 mm (3/8 in.) or less will be cost-effective for a 20-year service life, and the systems with thicknesses of 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) or less will be cost-effective for a 10-year service life.

Book Evaluation of Construction zone Pavement Marking Materials

Download or read book Evaluation of Construction zone Pavement Marking Materials written by Kenneth R. Agent and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to evaluate available foil-back and removable tapes as well as construction-zone raised pavement markers and to recommend materials that should be included on approved lists for use by the Kentucky Department of Highways. Tapes and markers were placed on transverse test sections and the reflectivity, durability, and appearance were observed. Tapes to be included on the approved lists for foil-back and removable tapes were recommended. Tapes manufactured by 3M, Flex-O-Lite, Cataphote, and Swarolite were included on the list of acceptable foil-back tapes. Recommended removable tapes were the 3M and Cataphote removable tapes. Stimsonite 66 and Flex-O-Lite construction-zone markers were included on the approved list for construction-zone raised pavement markers. More specific guidelines were developed to use in future evaluations of construction-zone preformed tape and markers.
