Book Liming of Acidified Surface Waters

Download or read book Liming of Acidified Surface Waters written by Lennart Henrikson and published by . This book was released on 1994-12-28 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acidification is one of the most serious environmental problems - especially in Sweden, which suffers most from the consequences of acid rain. Besides international negotiations to reduce sulphur emissions - 85% of the acid load on Sweden can be traced to emissions from outside the country itself - the Swedish Government has employed large-scale, operative liming activities to counteract acidification of surface waters. The scientific results show that - although acidification cannot be solved by liming alone - the measures taken resulted in substantial improvements to around 8,000 Swedish lakes and watercourses. The idea is that other countries affected by acidification may also profit from this experience.

Book Acidic Deposition and Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Acidic Deposition and Aquatic Ecosystems written by Donald F. Charles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acidic deposition and its effect on aquatic ecosystems have become major scientific and public policy issues in the United States since the early 1970s, and many diverse studies have been completed. This book is the first comprehensive, integrated synthesis of available information on current and potential effects of acidic precipitation on lakes and streams in geographic regions with a high number of low-alkalinity surface water from the Adirondacks and the Southern Blue Ridge to the Upper Midwest to the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and the Cascades. Written by leading authors, the book examines the current status of water chemistry and characterizes the processes controlling water chemistry on a regional basis by using and comparing high-quality data sets. Methods for the assessment of long-term changes in water chemistry and their effects in fish and other biota are also presented. The book amply illustrates the substantial diversity among geographical regions with respect to the nature of surface waters and the complexity of their response to acidic deposition. This volume will be of great interest to researchers in limnology, aquatic ecology, environmental chemistry, hydrology, and atmospheric sciences. It will also serve as an important reference for environmental managers and policy makers.

Book The Surface Waters Acidification Programme

Download or read book The Surface Waters Acidification Programme written by B. J. Mason and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the results of a major international and interdisciplinary study of the mechanisms and consequences of surface water acidification, which is a growing environmental concern. This detailed, long-term study provides an authoritative overview of the chemical process involved in acidification and, in particular, of its biological impact on freshwater life. The Surface Waters Acidification Programme (SWAP) has drawn together for the first time the many facets of this complex phenomenon: the volume includes sections on hydrochemical studies in catchments, catchment process studies, catchment manipulation experiments, chemical processes, paleolimnological studies, biological effects on freshwater life, and modeling studies. The volume finishes with an assessment of SWAP and its conclusions. The results are applicable to all those areas suffering the consequences of acidification, especially in the Northern Temperate Zone. Published on behalf of the Royal Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ROBERT A. GOLDSTEIN Electric Power Research Institute. Environmental Assessment Department. P.O. Box 10412. Palo Alto. CA 94303. U.S.A. CARL W. U.S.A. (Received November I, 1984; revised May 14, 1985) Abstract. An integrated, interdisciplinary, intensive study of three forested watersheds in the Adirondack Park region of New York State was started in 1977 to quantify the relationship between the deposition of atmospheric acids and surface water acidity. A general mechanistic theory of lake-watershed acidification that takes into account the production and consumption of acidity by watershed processes, as well as atmospheric inputs of acidity, was developed. This theory is formulated as a mathematical simulation model. Model and data analyses establish the importance of using an integrated ecosystem perspective to assess the vulnerability of surface waters to acidification by acidic deposition. The acid-base status of surface waters is determined by the interaction of many factors: soil, hydrologic, vegetation, geologic, climatic, atmospheric. The absolute and relative contribution of any given factor can be highly variable, both geographically and temporally; hence, lake sensitivity to changes in the quality and quantity of atmospheric deposition is also highly variable.

Book The Chemical Response of Surface Waters and Organic Soils Across the Northeastern United States Following Reduced Inputs of Acidic Deposition 1984 2001

Download or read book The Chemical Response of Surface Waters and Organic Soils Across the Northeastern United States Following Reduced Inputs of Acidic Deposition 1984 2001 written by Richard Ashley Frank Warby and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I studied the changes in lake water chemistry and Oa-horizon base status between 1984 and 2001 at 130 stratified random sites across the northeastern U.S. to evaluate the population-level effects of decreases in acidic deposition. Surface-water SO42- concentrations decreased across the region at a median rate of -1.53 mueq L-1yr -1. Calcium concentrations also decreased, with a median rate of -1.73 mueq L-1yr-1. This decrease in Ca2+ retarded the recovery of surface water acid neutralizing capacity (Gran ANC), which increased at a median rate of +0.66 mueq L-1yr -1. There were small increases in pH in all sub-regions except Central New England and Maine, where the changes were not statistically significant. Median NO3- trends were not significant, except in the Adirondacks, where NO3- concentrations increased at a rate of +0.53 mueq L-1yr-1. I observed a region-wide decrease in the concentration of total Al, especially in ponds with low ANC values (ANC

Book Towards an Environmental Assessment Network

Download or read book Towards an Environmental Assessment Network written by Tom Shillington and published by Agence canadienne d'évaluation environnementale. This book was released on 1995 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, based on a draft paper prepared by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and reviewed by Summit participants, presents the results of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency-sponsored study. The paper offers a framework on how such a network could be organised and operated, and explains how the CEAA has used the framework to develop its site on the Internet. The report is also a contribution to the International Study of the Effectiveness of Environmental Assessment. The document proposes a framework for an EA network and looks at the experience of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
