Fundamental to our capacity to perceive sound is the ability to integrate some sounds and dissociate others. Behavioral research has produced considerable evidence for a type of auditory sensory memory lasting 200-300 ms. This short sensory buffer is essential to auditory perception. Similar sounds may be perceptually integrated during this period. The studies in this dissertation examined neural activity around the latencies of the short auditory store using event-related brain potentials (ERPs). The auditory N1 is a relatively large event-related response that occurs to stimulus onsets. Repetition of an auditory stimulus attenuates the amplitude of the N1 response that occurs to each tone. Although it has generally been assumed that such attenuation is due to neural refractoriness, refractoriness cannot account for the results of several studies. The present studies show that N1 amplitudes decrease progressively during the first few hundred ms of a stimulus train, regardless of the rate of presentation. This pattern supports an inhibitory model of response attenuation. The mismatch negativity (MMN) is an event-related response that occurs to violations in acoustic regularity. Most deviations in auditory regularities elicit proportional MMN responses (i.e., larger deviations elicit larger MMNs). The present studies used the MMN to examine the representation of time in the brain. The results show that the proportional response pattern holds for inter-stimulus intervals (at least within a particular range). This indicates that the temporal context in which sounds occur is encoded in a similar fashion as other stimulus properties. The ERPs also suggest a qualitatively different response for sounds presented at 100-ms intervals, relative to longer intervals. Both of these studies illustrate the importance of time in auditory processing, particularly in terms of the integration of sounds in sensory memory. An excitation/inhibition model for temporal contrast detection is discussed. The event-related optical signal (EROS) was also used to record neural activity in the auditory cortex. Although no significant results were obtained, methodological details and general experimental considerations regarding EROS are discussed.
