The original curriculum was designed using a four-stage curriculum development methodology proposed by McBeath (2002) and other experts in the field including components of (1) needs assessment; (2) design and development; (3) dissemination and implementation; and (4) course evaluation. Upon completion of the original curriculum by a class of fifth grade students, it was refined as per the recommendations of a panel of expert reviewers. The curriculum and its implications were discussed and related to the prior literature and recommendations for future research were made.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of a Humane Education Program (HEP) on some socio-emotional skills and socio-cognitive aspects of adolescents, as well as to analyze the psychological aspects involved in adolescents' dispositions and behaviors to act in favor of animals. The study also sought to understand how students were involved in the program activities and how their level of engagement in the activities was associated with the program effectiveness. School Prevention of Animal Cruelty (SPAC) is a program designed to help adolescents make informed decisions about their relationships with animals, as well as to empower them to act on behalf of animal welfare. In SPAC's evaluation, 78 eighth-grade students (45 girls and 33 boys) from a public school in Bogotá participated (age range 12-14). In general, SPAC's implementation showed favorable results regarding student engagement in the designed activities, and strengthening of competencies such as empathy towards animals, active listening, and option generation of adolescents. However, it is important to acknowledge that better results were expected in the evaluation of the program effectiveness, because it only showed changes in empathy towards animals. In addition, at the implementation level, the activities were not conducted exactly as they were designed because there were difficulties with the spaces and supplies availability. Furthermore, we consider to be possible that our designs were not the most appropriate to achieve the expected changes in the group of students. Finally, this research showed that there are still aspects to be explored in HEP's design and implementation. Additionally, it allowed us to identify important aspects for the design of activities aimed at generating increases in empathy towards animals.
