Book Evaluation of Three Percent Aqueous Film Forming Foam AFFF Concentrates as Fire Fighting Agents

Download or read book Evaluation of Three Percent Aqueous Film Forming Foam AFFF Concentrates as Fire Fighting Agents written by Edwin J. Jablonski and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-scale fire test program involving 20,000-square foot JP-4 fuel fires was conducted to evaluate the fire suppression effectiveness and compatibility of 3 percent Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) agents in Air Force fire fighting vehicles. Three commercially available 3 percent AFFF concentrates were tested in accordance with military specification MIL-F-24385B. Test results are summarized in Appendix A. As a result of these tests, an updated Revision C to this MIL SPEC has been accomplished with new requirements for both 3 percent and 6 percent AFFF extinguishing agents. (Author).

Book Comparative Evaluation of Firefighting Foam Agents

Download or read book Comparative Evaluation of Firefighting Foam Agents written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information was obtained by conducting laboratory experiments and large-scale fire tests which were of value in estimating the fire extinguishing effectiveness of eight Aqueous-Film-Forming-Foams (AFFF), 11 fluoroprotein foams (FPF), and three protein foam (PF) agents. Large-scale fire tests were performed under fixed fire conditions employing air-aspirating and non-air-aspirating nozzles on 82.4-, 101-, and 143-foot diameter Jet A fuel fires. Experiments were performed with only one foam agent which was considered representative of each class. Experiments tend to validate the continuation of allowing a 30-percent reduction in the water requirement at certificated U.S. airports when AFFF is substituted for protein foam (Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 139.49) and to maintain a 1:1 equivalency ratio when fluoroprotein foam is substituted for protein foam. The data also tend to substantiate the validity of allowing an equivalent reduction in water requirements at airports when the 3-percent AFFF, FPF, and PF agents are substituted for the 6-percent agents within each class. Book Aqueous Foam Toxicology Evaluation and Hazard Review

Download or read book Aqueous Foam Toxicology Evaluation and Hazard Review written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aqueous foams are aggregates of bubbles mechanically generated by passing air or other gases through a net, screen, or other porous medium that is wetted by an aqueous solution of surface-active foaming agents (surfactants). Aqueous foams are important in modem fire-fighting technology, as well as for military uses for area denial and riot or crowd control. An aqueous foam is currently being developed and evaluated by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) as a Less-Than-Lethal Weapon for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the toxicity of the aqueous foam developed for the NIJ and to determine whether there are any significant adverse health effects associated with completely immersing individuals without protective equipment in the foam. The toxicity of the aqueous foam formulation developed for NIJ is determined by evaluating the toxicity of the individual components of the foam. The foam is made from a 2--5% solution of Steol CA-330 surfactant in water generated at expansion ratios ranging from 500:1 to 1000:1. SteoI CA-330 is a 35% ammonium laureth sulfate in water and is produced by Stepan Chemical Company and containing trace amounts (

Book Evaluation of Aqueous Film Forming Foam for Fire Protection in Aircraft Hangars

Download or read book Evaluation of Aqueous Film Forming Foam for Fire Protection in Aircraft Hangars written by David E. Breen and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old style sprinkler deluge systems, discharging as much as 0.35 gal/min/sq ft of Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), have been found to be incapable of suppressing 900-sq ft JP-4 fires with 400-sq ft simulated wing obstructions rapidly enough to prevent structural damage to simulated aircraft in hangars. Two oscillating monitor nozzles, in combination with a 0.20 gal/min/sq ft water deluge system, were tested on 100-sq ft pan fires of JP-4 at 50 and 100 psi, using three different AFFF agents. The application rate was approximately 0.1 gal/min/sq ft. Both nozzles afforded equivalent performance. One of the three agents was found to require more than twice as much time to achieve control as the other two agents.
