Book excerpt: Collegiate student-athletes are a unique group of individuals who experience a vast array of cognitive and physiological stressors. In addition to the typical stressors of an average college student, such as homesickness, finances, academics, and social relationships, student-athletes must also cope with lack of free time, pressure to perform, relationships with coaches and teammates, and physiological stress due to training and competing. Student-athletes with unmanaged chronic stress are more likely to experience a plethora of negative health outcomes, effecting performance in the classroom, on the field, and in life. Currently, survey instruments exist to predict cognitive and physiological sources of stress in isolation, but no existing instrument integrates both cognitive and physiological stressors into a single measure of chronic stress. The current cross-sectional study compared magnitude and sources of stress, psychological and physiological, experienced by Montana State University student-athletes (n=30) and their non-athlete counterparts (n=22). In addition, associations between chronic stress (as indicated by hair cortisol concentration, or HCC) and subjective measures of psychological stress, physiological stress and sleep quality were assessed in a subgroup of participants (n=12 student-athletes; n=9 non-athletes). Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Given the reported impact that organizational stressors place on athletes, counseling and sport psychology researchers have sought out psychological mechanisms that could help individuals manage these stressors, using a strengths-based approach. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of protective factors that promote resilience in managing the demands related to organizational stressors in collegiate sport. Fifty-two NCAA Division 1 athletes participated in this embedded mixed-methods study to assess the salience of protective factors when managing organizational stressors, the most frequently experienced organizational stressors, and the most influential organizational stressors on their performance and well-being. The results indicated that perceived social support was the most salient protective factor for collegiate athletes when encountered with an organizational stressor. Further, the organizational stressor of my goals was experienced most frequently and deemed to be the most helpful stressor for performance and well-being. Participants also reported that the organizational stressor of 'injuries' was the most debilitative to their performance and well-being. These findings provide counseling and sport psychology professionals with a deeper understanding of the psychological factors that athletes rely upon to manage organizational stressors along with the ways in which these organizational stressors influence collegiate athletes. These results offer an additional perspective to the existing literature on the stress-resilience-performance relationship in sport.

Moreover, pacing behaviour, decision-making, self-regulation, and effort perception can also explain the role of the brain in physical activity and exercise management. Thus, the aim of this Research Topic is to share the impact of a psychophysiological approach in physical activity, exercise, and sports. The goal of this Topic is to address the following: • Factors determining performance, including technical/tactical, physiological, cognitive, and psychosocial; • training and competition demand; • training interventions and testing in sports; • acute and chronic effects of training in psychophysiological variables; • coaching in sports; • strength and conditioning, mental health, and performance; • recent developments within sports sciences research. This Research Topic endeavors to explore at specific themes related to physiological stress and mental well-being. Additionally, we aim to provide evidence to coaches and sports scientists highlighting the relationship between training and competition demands, related to performance. We also want to analyze the effects of strength and conditioning training, and coaching effects (acute and chronic) on psychological and physiological. Finally, it is our intention to provide scientific literature with evidence for a relationship between movement, behavior and cognition with physiological performance: the psychophysiological approach.
