These deficits impact their home, school, and community relationships. During the adolescent years, peer relationships are an important aspect of a person’s life; however, without having the social skills to engage with peers, children with ASD can begin to feel social isolation, thus impacting their mental state and potentially developing long-term mental issues. Often times, adolescent’s with ASD experience depression, loneliness, withdrawal, and social and/or attentional problems. Adolescents with ASD are aware of the relationships their typical peers engage in and want to have similar experiences. The adolescent years are a pivotal time for children with ASD to continue in learning and practicing social skills they may have acquired from interventions in their younger years. Continuing to promote their social development will provide them with the social skills needed to continue to meet higher level social demands as they matriculate into middle school. The research will evaluate the effectiveness of social skills training/interventions. The PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Related Skills) Curriculum for School-Based Professionals will be evaluated to examine its effectiveness in adolescent social skills training, as it is one of five evidence-based social skills training for adolescents. Although research on social skills interventions is limited, it continues to be a growing field. With its worldwide implementation across clinics and school settings, the PEERS research has shown it is an effective social skills intervention. Its use of previous successful components in conjunction with components make this intervention effective for adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Book excerpt: Social interaction skills are a core area of deficit for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and often limit the opportunities these individuals have to develop meaningful friendships. School is an ideal setting to address these challenges, as there are many peers are available to practice social interaction skills. However, without support, students with an ASD often do not interact with their peers. Therefore, social skills support in schools is important to address the social development of children with ASD. At this time, though, there is a limited amount of support for interventions to address the social challenges of children with ASD in school settings. Currently, it is recommended that social skills interventions be provided in natural settings at school rather than analog settings. However, it is uncertain if natural environment interventions are considered more effective because of the setting they are provided in or the intervention procedures used in these settings. The current study evaluated a social skills intervention using evidence-based naturalistic teaching procedures provided in an analog setting (i.e., special education classroom). Five students with ASD in kindergarten through 2nd grade were identified to participate in this research study. The intervention was implemented daily by special education staff members (two special education teachers and two special education assistants) who received training and ongoing consultation. Additionally, fidelity of implementation of the intervention was measured throughout the study and the social validity of the intervention was measured prior to and following the implementation of the intervention. Results of this study indicate that the intervention was implemented with high fidelity for all five participants (range: 97-100%) and participants showed significant increases in the percent of time they were engaged in social play and/or conversation with peers following the introduction of the intervention (p = .0026). Findings based on visual analysis provide support that naturalistic interventions conducted in an analog setting can produce significant increases in the social behaviors of students; however, these changes did not generalize to natural settings. Social validity data from this study indicates that educators and students who participated in the intervention found the intervention goals to be socially important, the intervention procedures to be feasible and acceptable, and the intervention to be effective.

Understanding how the brain processes complex information and how such abilities are disrupted in individuals with neuropsychological disorders will require an improved understanding of brain connectivity. Autism is an intriguingly complex neurodevelopmental disorder with multidimensional symptoms and cognitive characteristics. A biological origin for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) had been proposed even in the earliest published accounts (Kanner, 1943; Asperger, 1944). Despite decades of research, a focal neurobiological marker for autism has been elusive. Nevertheless, disruptions in interregional and functional and anatomical connectivity have been a hallmark of neural functioning in ASD. Theoretical accounts of connectivity perceive ASD as a cognitive and neurobiological disorder associated with altered functioning of integrative circuitry. Neuroimaging studies have reported disruptions in functional connectivity (synchronization of activated brain areas) during cognitive tasks and during task-free resting states. While these insights are valuable, they do not address the time-lagged causality and directionality of such correlations. Despite the general promise of the connectivity account of ASD, inconsistencies and methodological differences among studies call for more thorough investigations. A comprehensive neurological account of ASD should incorporate functional, effective, and anatomical connectivity measures and test the diagnostic utility of such measures. In addition, questions pertaining to how cognitive and behavioral intervention can target connection abnormalities in ASD should be addressed. This research topic of the Frontiers in Human Neuroscience addresses “Brain Connectivity in Autism” primarily from cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging perspectives.

Book excerpt: Social reciprocity deficits are a core feature of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and a major source of impairment regardless of cognitive or language ability (Carter, Davis, Klin, & Volkmar, 2005). Since these impairments do not naturally remit with age, it is critical to intervene as early as possible to offset potential risk factors (Tantum, 2003). Group training approaches provide children with teaching opportunities with other children and allow for the direct instruction of skills within a structured environment (Bellini, Peters, Benner, & Hopf, 2007). Research in social skills group research has increased, but several questions remain. This study evaluated the outcome of a social skills curriculum for 37 children between the ages of 8 to 14 with a diagnosis of ASD within two different treatment contexts, the camp and clinic model. The camp model simulates a natural setting in which children with ASD spend 5 hours each day for 10 days where social skills are taught through engaging activities and interactions with peers both typical and with ASD. The clinic model, on the other hand, is a one hour a week session spread over 10 to 12 weeks where social skills are taught and practiced while parents observe through a one-way mirror and are trained on the intervention methods. Both clinic and camp model treatments are then compared with a third group who experience both treatments within the clinic and camp setting. Results show that the combined context had the highest treatment effects, followed by the camp model and, finally, the clinic model. Analysis of covariance did not indicate the groups differ from each other significantly in terms of treatment gains. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of translation of research into clinical practice, use of appropriate outcome measures, and generalization of skills through parent training and utilization of training programs within the natural context. While the intervention and results are promising, replication with larger samples and use of a control group are needed.
