Book excerpt: Excerpt from Euthanasia: A Poem in Four Cantos of Spenserian Metre on the Discovery of the North-West Passage by Sir John Franklin, Knight So I have wished, nay so I have striven, to write; with what success let others judge. The second notion, alluded to above, is more specific and precise, and cannot be so easily dismissed. This does not object to poetry, but to the poem, as regards the subject chosen, and asserts that no poem of any length, that is of the epic nature, can be really great or interesting, unless the event of which it treats be distant and remote, in time at least, if not also in place. Book The Masque of Death and Other Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Masque of Death and Other Poems Classic Reprint written by Charles Lotin Hildreth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Masque of Death, and Other Poems It is with a regretful sense of a broken flight, a race half run, a song silenced in the midst, that I look upon these my collected verses, wrought, for the most part, in the brief and infrequent intervals of uncongenial and imperative labors. I feel that they constantly bear the impress of the weariness and depression which they were intended, in some measure at least, to relieve. This is not said by way of excuse for their shortcomings, which I perceive, perhaps more clearly than another can. To offer ones productions to criticism, and then deprecate it, is an affectation which I shall not be guilty of. But I shall be grateful if, with the perception of their faults, shall be united some appreciation of the endeavor which called them into being. That, I know, has a value and a worth of its own. If it win for me some degree of kindly recognition among thoughtful readers, my hopes will be more than fulfilled. Naked here lying at length, Two corpses - a man and a boy; One seeming shorn of his strength By a world that is strong to destroy; The other with infantine limbs that can hardly have tasted of joy. What little their lives were worth The world has cruelly wrecked; Sad Pity in vain stepped forth, And the doom has taken effect. Free born to thoughts that ever age on age Caressed sweet singers in their sacred sleep, Thy soul shall enter on its heritage Of God's unuttered wisdom. Thou shalt sweep With hand assured the ringing lyre of life, Till the fierce anguish of its bitter strife, Its pain, death, discord, sorrow, and despair, Break into rhythmic music. Thou shalt share The prophet-joy that kept forever glad God's poet-souls when all a world was sad. Enter and live Thou hast not lived before We are but soul-cast shadows. Ah, no more The heart shall bear the burdens of the brain 5 Now shall the strong heart think, nor think in vain. In the dear company of peace, and those Who bore for man life's utmost agony, Thy soul shall climb to cliffs of still repose, And see before thee lie Time's mystery, And that which is God's time, Eternity Whence sweeping over thee dim myriad things, The awful centuries yet to be, in hosts That stir the _vast of heaven with formless wings, Shall cast for thee their shrouds, and, like to ghosts Unriddle all the past, till awed and still Thy soul the secret hath of, good and ill.
